I don't feel like this album did justice to Guthrie's lyrics and person like the Mermaid Ave. albums have. I haven't been able to put into words why that is...it may have to do with the fact that most of Jim James songs on New Multitudes sound more like MMJ songs than Guthrie songs I don't know. There are a lot of good classic folk songs on the album but on the whole I didn't get the sense that the artists involved, made the album as a tribute to Woody Guthrie, so much as they made it for themselves.

More Guthrie songs? Did Jay Farrar buy the Guthrie's catalog under Jebodiah Guthrie's nose like MJ did under McCartney? He has done a lot of these. Jay and selected friends record some more selected Guthrie songs. ALL the good songs are Jay's. I don't give a fuck about the other dudes here. Its kinda shitty that most of Jay's songs fall on the bonus disc too. "San Antone Meat House" slays every song here.

Some Good, Some Bad and the Further Disintegration of My Morning Jacket's "Yim Yames"
When you round up four musicians to write music to and sing songs individually, I guess a mixed bag is to be expected. Jay Farrar and Will Johnson both have moments of excellence and horror. "Hoping Machine", "Chorine My Sheba Queen" and "New Multitudes" by them are the best tracks on this album. However, Farrar's "Careless Reckless Love" is pretty weak and on "V.D. City", Johnson sounds like that jerk from Social Distortion trying to sing a Gin Blossoms song. *Shudders*. Anders Parker's songs are boring mediocrity. Jim James' songs are okay and he at least tries the hardest to bring something unique to the table but his are further proof that he has decided to dive head first into self parody and that there may be no looking back. I'm finding it more and more difficult to believe that the beginning of his art's downward spiral and the use of his new moronic moniker taking place nearly at the same time is a coincidence. Jim James: brilliant singer, songwriter and musician. A true artist. Yim Yames: falsetto Kermit the Frog singing comedy country songs to children.Published
Nice collaborative effort between these talents. Always sends chills down my back to hear Jay's voice. Too rare.
