referencing Never No Lament: The Blanton-Webster Band, 1940-1942 (3×CD, Compilation, Reissue, Remastered) 82876-50857-2
Indispensable set of early forties sides contains the master takes of the piano bass duets as well as the best by far version of Jump for Joy sung by Ivie Anderson. The audio suffers from peak distortion that I believe to be intentional, or a result of boosting and noise reduction. - The Ellington Band at the height of their powers with the redoubtable Jimmy Blanton and Ben Webster among the heavy hitters. All the recordings are from 1940 to 1942 and while it's not everything recorded during those years, it's a pretty comprehensive collection. It's just amazing how tight and wonderful this band is and how many classic songs are played. I would have given it five stars but it's a mono recording and somewhat lo fi and I'm no fan of mono or lo fi. It's just too sonically dated for me to give it five stars.
