- Just picked up a new, sealed vinyl copy . All sounds great (pressing wise) apart from 'After the Gold Rush'. I have patches of cyclic static between 1 and 2 minutes in and some more spots towards the end of the track . Have cleaned it and played it through multiple times, hoping to dig out any crap in the grooves, but with no luck. Cannot see any visual quality control issues like scratches or scuffs. It looks pristine.
Aside from the disappointing discovery (via these reviews) that 'The Loner' was not included and 'Don't be Denied' is faded out, the rest is great !
Although, i must admit that ; if Neil has decided to leave off a track from a vinyl 'archive release' (for whatever personal reason) , he could have at least included a download of the full recording as a thank you to fans that fork out the money for the physical format.
I must've got a 'dud' copy, if no one else has this pressing fault on track 2 ??? - I’m going 5 stars under protest. The music, artist and mastering is really good. My gripe with these NY reissues is nearly all of them I’ve purchased thus far aren’t flat. The heavy vinyl is great if it spins flat and true. This one is no exception. Wobbly at best and causes its share of wow & flutter. Annoying as hell. Each time I shell out the money, it’s a nail-biter till I cue a platter up and get seasick watching my stylus try to survive the bonsai pipeline. Great music, just wish the QC on the vinyl was more attentive to toss out the wobbly ones.
- If you love Neil Young, you should probably buy this while it's affordable. Excellent setlist and pressing.
- Excellent pressing. Neil Young in superb form, no quality issues with the sound as far as I'm concerned, especially for live recordings. Thoroughly recommended for any Neil Young fan.
- In contrast to the last 20 years of Neil Young releases, Tuscaloosa has a comparatively bad sound. It's not the sound quality you've been used to from Neil Young in the past.
- Ordered from Amazon, and no complaints–flat vinyl with no surface noise. (My inner sleeves did split slightly in shipping, and that's annoying, but absolutely no complaints on the vinyl.)
Between this and last year's Roxy set, it's been nice to see Neil release live performances from the Ditch era. Time Fades Away is probably my all-time favorite Neil LP, and that's a mixed blessing as far as Tuscaloosa is concerned. While it's great to hear a set from the early part of the tour, this album is not going to replace Time Fades Away in any Neil fan's heart anytime soon.
That said, the early runs through "Lookout Joe" and (especially) "New Mama" are nothing short of revelatory. And the version of "Time Fades Away" (the song) here is incredible. I wish this performance had been chosen for the album of the same name way back in '73.
