Neighbours: 10 of the best ever season finales

Neighbours: 10 of the best season finales, from Karl and Sarah's forbidden kiss to Susan being buried alive

Dee's return has a lot to live up to...

FremantleMedia

We love a good soap cliffhanger here at Digital Spy, and there's plenty of them in the Neighbours 2016 season finale. There's a double wedding, two characters discovering they're pregnant and a back-from-the-dead shock for Toadie! (Roll on 2017).

A cracking season finale of Neighbours should contain a perfect blend of romance (either a reunion or somebody kissing somebody they shouldn't), a life-endangering incident for one or more characters and a shock that nobody sees coming.

So how do previous season climaxes stack up? We cast our minds back over 30 years' worth of finales to come up with our pick of the ten episodes that left us wanting more…

1990

End-of-year episodes during the '80s went for a heart-warming vibe, as the Ramsay Street residents celebrated Christmas with a pantomime or a knees-up.

The first finale of the '90s is notable as it viewers with unresolved questions – something that hadn't been done before. Would Madge's niece Gemma need an amputation after her motorbike accident? (No). Would Christina Alessi accept Paul's marriage proposal? (Yes). And was the mysterious young man Glen Donnelly really Jim's long-lost son? (Yes).

1994

Playing blonde bombshell Annalise Hartman, actress Kimberley Davies dominated Neighbours in the mid-'90s. So it was only fitting that the '94 season ended with Annalise's wedding to Mark (Bruce Samazan). Unfortunately, in a preposterous plot twist, hapless Mark announced he couldn't marry Annalise because he'd found God and wanted to be a priest. OK, then.

1997

This one's a classic as it featured the scandalous first kiss between Dr. Karl Kennedy and his receptionist Sarah, which led to one of the show's most memorable storylines.

Elsewhere, Karl's youngest Billy was kissing a girl who wasn't his girlfriend, and Philip Martin's trackside proposal to girlfriend Ruth was upstaged by her racing car driver son Ben being involved in a terrifying collision. Never a dull moment!

1999

Nothing says "Happy New Year!" like two couples reuniting (Karl/Susan and Billy/Anne), a proposal (Drew/Libby) and the Scully house going up in flames thanks to negligent babysitter Michelle.

2002

After Susan having a turbulent year thanks to her amnesia, she and Karl finally renewed their vows with Nina (Delta Goodrem) singing at the reception.

And Joe Scully was in for a shock when wife Lyn revealed that she was pregnant…

2004

Probably the most dramatic and jaw-dropping Neighbours finale ever. That vow renewal hadn't worked out too well for Karl and Susan, as two years later he was marrying the messed up Izzy Hoyland. However, the bride ditched the groom at the altar but agreed that the reception should go ahead. As you do.

Cue much merriment at Lou's Place – until somebody set fire to it, trapping the likes of Stuart and Sindi inside. While the horrified residents watched on as the raging fire took hold of the pub and the coffee shop, viewers spotted a black-clad Paul Robinson (who'd been MIA for a decade) lurking menacingly in the background. Surely he had nothing to do with the blaze? Mwah ha ha!

2005

A year later, Paul Robinson's villainous Noughties reign was in full swing. This led to an unlikely but gripping season cliffhanger, as a grief-stricken Harold Bishop (whose entire family had been wiped out by a plane crash caused by Paul's son Robert) tried to strangle Paul!

2008

This finale, involving a school rafting accident gone horribly wrong, is memorable for being the last appearance of Michala Banas, who took over the role of Libby Kennedy for 24 episodes. When the show returned in 2009, the raft drama continued – but with Kym Valentine back in her rightful place as Libby! Only in soap-land, people.

2013

It doesn't get much juicier than a long-lost baby revelation, and in 2013 the complicated history between the Willis and Turner families deepened as Lauren confessed to Lucy that 20 years earlier she'd had Brad's baby, aka Paige.

2014

In recent years (before Australian and UK screenings synched up at the start of 2016) the show would obligingly crank up the drama for the episode that British audiences would see before the Christmas break.

This effectively created two season finales. Confusing, huh? In 2014 we were left wondering if Susan would survive being buried alive by Nate, while Sonya had a stalker in the house…
