It was accumulated over the centuries by the rulers of China. Many items are unique, they cannot be replicated elsewhere. Much of the collection was transported to Taiwan when the Nationalist government retreated to Taiwan, it's a treasure chest of Chinese art works. The National Palace Museum is in Shihlin, not far from Taipei.Visited February 2023Traveled with friendsWritten May 6, 2023

There are treasures in every room and they are so well displayed and explained - it is wonderful. We saw so many amazing pieces of art - of all types. And they have a terrific tea house/lunch room if you need to take a break (as we did). I highly recommend that you go and take your time and visit each of the rooms - you will find something special in each...Visited August 2023Written August 5, 2023
- TheOExpress🏴🇭🇰Hong Kong, China5,694 contributionsTry a weekday to beat the crowds……because the Sunday I visited was REALLY busy! That didn’t spoil it but it definitely would have been better to wander round with fewer other visitors. Anyway, the collection is incredible and it’s a must-do for tourists in Taipei! In particular the interactive exhibition, painting gallery and the religious statues are incredible.Visited August 2023Traveled soloWritten August 27, 2023
- D13OThe Hague, The Netherlands248 contributionsBeautiful museum with a great collectionThe national palace museum is definately a must visit when in Taipei. The have a great imperal collection of bronzes, jades, paintings, ceramics, personal artifacts of the imperial court and more. However there are also some parts that are not very interesting to a western tourist in my opinion, like the calligraphy and books sections. Of course this can be different if you can actually read Chinese. That said the ceramic, personal artifacts and jade sections are particulary beautiful as is the bronze section. However if you visited the National Museum of China in Beijing, you wont see anything new in that last section. All in all good for 1,5 - 2 hours.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 10, 2023
- MelissaL0715Tampa, Florida912 contributionsBeautiful museum of Chinese and Taiwanese art/historyIf you enjoy seeing works of art from different countries, this museum is for you. Having never traveled to Taiwan before, we decided to visit, and were not disappointed. They have an extremely large collection of Chinese and Taiwanese art. Well worth the price of admission (which was far less than US museums). We learned a great deal about historical aspect as well. There’s enough to keep you busy all day, but enough to just see for a few of hours if your time is limited. definitely worthwhile!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- Andy FDevizes, United Kingdom1,228 contributionsExcellent MuseumWhat I liked about this place was that, although it was very crowded with people, there was still plenty of room to move around. The place is vast, spread over several floors and many galleries. The jade and ceramics collections are world-class. Paintings and calligraphy also on show. Excellent shop.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 30, 2023

Some guidance is helpful to the untrained eye because there are so many exhibits, it is impossible to take everything in and understand which exhibits are ‘must see’. However, there is a good self-guide on their website ‘classic tour II’ and ‘the emperor’s toy box’ that takes about two hours and covers all the highlights. The museum is split into individual rooms and the signage is good. Lots of tour groups in evidence but generally it never feels too crowded because of its size. The oldest pieces are on the top floor and some of the craftmanship particularly the jade pieces is amazing. Said to be the best collection of Chinese art in the world and we can see why. A place that should be visited on a tour of Taiwan.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 23, 2023

I was there to see plenty of interesting exhibits and you can see a lot of artifacts dating centuries old which says a lot of Taiwan's rich history. My 5 year old son was with me too and they have an interactive children's area where kids can learn and do activities.Visited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 8, 2023

This is one of the premier museums on Chinese artworks in the world, its core holdings being the incomparable treasures from the Imperial Palace of the Qing Dynasty. The museum itself is relatively small, which means like most museums there always be some wonderful special exhibitions. I always visit this museum whenever I am in Taipei - primarily for these special exhibitions. Before relations between Taiwan and China cooled, the museum was packed with Chinese visitors from the mainland but not so much any more, which actually made my visit much more pleasant. There are now some sections with multimedia presentations, but by and large the displays are pretty standard. Scholarly and informative, yes; imaginative and stimulating, not so much. But still worth a visit particularly if you are into Chinese art and culture.

Nothing much to see if you will purchase tickets to get inside. Very clean place. Only 1 cafe within the museum hence you would really need to line if you want to eat here. Theres is a restaurant few walks within the area that is also a bit crowded.
Very good for pictures only and see artifacts.

Full disclosure: I am not a museum person. But after visiting the southern branch of the museum in Chiayi we decided to come to Taipei to see the main branch. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed some of the displays so much, like snuff bottles and curio boxes. And the famous jade bok choy cabbage (I didn’t even have to stand in line). Worth the visit!

Spent an entire day at the National Palace Museum. It's my third visit since 1986, and it's the single most important place to visit on a trip to Taiwan provided you enjoy Chinese art. The museum wasn't super crowded when we visited, which was wonderful and allowed for better viewing and lingering over the artworks. My last visit was a disappointment owing to huge tour groups from mainland China. There was no sense of crowd control then and the whole experience was closer to being in a rugby scrum. English explanations are good for the artwork, and getting an audio guide is well worth it.
My principal complaint this visit is that there aren't enough paintings on display, and too many rooms were closed (especially on the 1st floor). Another annoyance was the waste of display space with multimedia presentations of the artwork. Only a small fraction of the whole collection is ever on display at one time, and for the life of me I can't figure out why the museum would devote any display space to multimedia displays. That, in my opinion, is better left to being available free online where anyone can see it and it can inform a future visit or general interest. Nonetheless, when in Taipei this is a great museum to visit.

We took MRT from Taipei Main Station to Shilin MRT Station and took direct R30 bus to National Palace Museum. The R30 bus goes directly to the main entrance which you enter and the museum tickets. The ticket costs 350 Taiwan Dollars. The museum is nice and well maintained. One building was closed. The main building was opened. The Chinese art works are beautiful. The staff were friendly and helpful.

China has a very long history, many artefacts displayed here were ancient long before Christ was born -- the oracle bones, for example. Many artefacts are quite beautiful, some require a knowledge of Chinese civilisation, such as calligraphy. Allow yourself enough time, it's a big museum. By the way, if these artefacts had remained in mainland China, many would have been destroyed by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

Great historical artifacts from China. Some very old 3,000 BCE relics and wonderful jade pieces. However, I was not that interested in the calligraphy or porcelain artifacts. We took the metro (red line) and then a bus to get to the museum. The bus stop is right outside the metro station with various museum buses coming every 10 minutes or so.

My wife and I took the English language tour which lasted from 3:00 to 4:30. The tour guide was nice but the tour wasn’t too impressive. She spent too much time in certain areas and solicited too much input from our tour group as to where we should spend time. We would have gotten a lot more out of our visit had we just used the audio guide.
If you schedule a tour, be aware that it takes at least 5 minutes to get from the road to the inside of the museum.

Does the museum offer annual memberships to individuals? I want to visit the museum on different days and I hope to not pay the full price everytime. In the US, Italy, or other places, museums offer annual membership for unlimited visits. Some memberships even allow a friend to come along with the member, like at the San Francisco Museums of Fine Arts. I have read the museum's website but could not find the answer. Thank you for your time.

I have been to the San Francisco Museums of Fine Art. The National Palace Museum offers multiple entry options, and it is certainly is worth more than one visit, particularly if you are interested in Asian art and history. I do not know if it offers annual memberships, but the staff are very helpful. You can ast them. I woulld ecommend that you take a guided tour, the guides have excellent English and are very knowledgeable.

Hi,
We want to take a guided tour in English of the NPM, but I have seen descriptions of the tour being between 45 minutes and 3 hours. How much is the guided tour and does it include museum entrance fees? Do you think it would be best to just rent an audio guide and plan our route ahead of time for the museum? What were the highlights for you? It will be crowded, as we will be there on a Sunday. Thank you.

Hi,
The audio guide is good enough. Most of the display items are uniquely numbered. As you reach the spot in front of the display, just enter the number in your audio guide- and you will have a wonderful description in a lucid clear voice
The National palace museum Taipei is huge & well organised. You need to spend at least 4-5 hours to do some justice
