Fantastic visit! As a family full of bird enthusiasts my kids and I were excited to see what the aviary had to offer. It did not disappoint! The exhibits were well designed and many were immersive. Whether you love birds, or are looking for something fun and/or educational, the aviary is a must when visiting Pittsburgh. Bonus that they are part of the AZA, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which offers half off admission to guests with participating AZA accredited institutions.

We happened to stay at an Airbnb near the National Aviary. After a visit to the Andy Warhol Museum, we happened across the National Aviary on our walk back to the Airbnb. What an amazing find! We learned so much about penguins (18 different species in the world today with five endangered), Andean Condors, tropical birds, and so much more! This is a must visit for anyone interested in learning, nature, and/or a hands-on experience.

I originally wondered if this would be worth the money, only to find it was a wonderful experience. Amazing variety of birds, many of which fly around within a few feet of you. The employees and volunteers were quite knowledgeable and eager to tell everyone more about the various birds. I would call it a "HIDDEN GEM" even though it is The "National" Aviary (since I had never heard of it previously). Lastly, pay the extra $3 to feed the Rainbow Lorikeets. They land on your arms and walk over to eat out of the tin in your hands.

It is fun and unique. In my opinion, it is a bit expensive, especially since they charge extra for other things such as a show they have. It can get crammed in certain areas. The open areas where one is essentially in the bird cage is cool. If one is a member of a reciprocal zoo, one can get 50% off admission. Only kids under 2 are free, so 2-year old children cost only a couple of dollars less than an adult. There is a snack bar on site, but one can also bring their own food and eat at a table, so one can pack a lunch.

The National Aviary is very nice, but it is a little smaller than I expected. The various habitats are well done and the staff is very friendly and able to answer questions. My young adult son participated in the Penguin Encounter and he really enjoyed it and felt it was worth the additional money. There were 7 people in the group and all were adults. It was a little frustrating that they encourage timed tickets and purchasing tickets in advance, but when you enter the aviary with a timed ticket, you still need to wait in line behind people buying their tickets. Seems like that process could be improved.

We had a great time at the aviary….all of the staff were very friendly and helpful especially at pointing out various birds our kids were trying to find. The bird feedings were long enough to be informative, but not too long to lose our kids’ attentions. We fed the lorikeets and also did a penguin encounter and they were both great. The bird sighting are great, but truly the staff are what make this a 5 star site!

This place was so wonderful to visit. Right from when we arrived Kelsey was very welcoming and knowledgeable with sharing info with us. We booked the Jr.Penguin encounter with the volunteer Melissa. This was fantastic and only $33 each. My son loved dressing up as a penguin and then meeting ‘sunshine’ the penguin in real life.

Lovely aviary. Enjoyed walking through the exhibits repeatedly which allows you to see them feeding the birds which brings them closer to you. Did the extra exhibit with the owl which was cool. The cafeteria area was very nice with additional areas to sit and eat. The only problem I had was that I missed an exibit with the birds flying because the owl person didn't know we were also doing that exhibit and we didn't know we had to mention it. Not a big deal but something to keep in mind. They kindly gave us a refund. The employees are very friendly and helpful.

Really nice place. Went here with my wife and we both enjoyed it very much. Nice mix of habitats and I like how immersive it is and allow you to be up-close and personal with the birds. The entirety of the place is somewhat small, so it doesn't take too long to go through the whole exhibit. But still worth-while for a short day trip.

Awesome time at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. First, the Aviary is next to a beautiful park that had people walking and playing around -- beautiful neighborhood. We went toward the end of our trip so had to leave after about an hour but easily could have spent much more time there. The facility is designed to be very digestible, so you do not have to walk a ton but still get the quality and depth that the entire ecosystem has to offer. We were able to view a feeding and talk with a trainer on island canaries that was awesome. The only thing I would recommend is that the biggest room with Tropical Rainforest wildlife only has one screen that has labels of the wildlife, so I would try to do some research beforehand or have a guide on your phone so you can see what you are viewing. Would recommend for people of all ages!
