    Fantastic experience for the family
Fantastic visit! As a family full of bird enthusiasts my kids and I were excited to see what the aviary had to offer. It did not disappoint! The exhibits were well designed and many were immersive. Whether you love birds, or are looking for something fun and/or educational, the aviary is a must when visiting Pittsburgh. Bonus that they are part of the AZA, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which offers half off admission to guests with participating AZA accredited institutions.

    Unexpected Gem in Pittsburgh
We happened to stay at an Airbnb near the National Aviary. After a visit to the Andy Warhol Museum, we happened across the National Aviary on our walk back to the Airbnb. What an amazing find! We learned so much about penguins (18 different species in the world today with five endangered), Andean Condors, tropical birds, and so much more! This is a must visit for anyone interested in learning, nature, and/or a hands-on experience.

Awesome Chance To Get Up Close With Birds From Around The World
I originally wondered if this would be worth the money, only to find it was a wonderful experience. Amazing variety of birds, many of which fly around within a few feet of you. The employees and volunteers were quite knowledgeable and eager to tell everyone more about the various birds. I would call it a "HIDDEN GEM" even though it is The "National" Aviary (since I had never heard of it previously). Lastly, pay the extra $3 to feed the Rainbow Lorikeets. They land on your arms and walk over to eat out of the tin in your hands.

A bit expensive for the size, but it is unique
It is fun and unique. In my opinion, it is a bit expensive, especially since they charge extra for other things such as a show they have. It can get crammed in certain areas. The open areas where one is essentially in the bird cage is cool. If one is a member of a reciprocal zoo, one can get 50% off admission. Only kids under 2 are free, so 2-year old children cost only a couple of dollars less than an adult. There is a snack bar on site, but one can also bring their own food and eat at a table, so one can pack a lunch.

    Nice, but small
The National Aviary is very nice, but it is a little smaller than I expected. The various habitats are well done and the staff is very friendly and able to answer questions. My young adult son participated in the Penguin Encounter and he really enjoyed it and felt it was worth the additional money. There were 7 people in the group and all were adults. It was a little frustrating that they encourage timed tickets and purchasing tickets in advance, but when you enter the aviary with a timed ticket, you still need to wait in line behind people buying their tickets. Seems like that process could be improved.

    Fantastic visit with great staff
We had a great time at the aviary….all of the staff were very friendly and helpful especially at pointing out various birds our kids were trying to find. The bird feedings were long enough to be informative, but not too long to lose our kids’ attentions. We fed the lorikeets and also did a penguin encounter and they were both great. The bird sighting are great, but truly the staff are what make this a 5 star site!

    Must visit
This place was so wonderful to visit. Right from when we arrived Kelsey was very welcoming and knowledgeable with sharing info with us. We booked the Jr.Penguin encounter with the volunteer Melissa. This was fantastic and only $33 each. My son loved dressing up as a penguin and then meeting ‘sunshine’ the penguin in real life.

    Happy Birds
Lovely aviary. Enjoyed walking through the exhibits repeatedly which allows you to see them feeding the birds which brings them closer to you. Did the extra exhibit with the owl which was cool. The cafeteria area was very nice with additional areas to sit and eat. The only problem I had was that I missed an exibit with the birds flying because the owl person didn't know we were also doing that exhibit and we didn't know we had to mention it. Not a big deal but something to keep in mind. They kindly gave us a refund. The employees are very friendly and helpful.

    Really nice place.
Really nice place. Went here with my wife and we both enjoyed it very much. Nice mix of habitats and I like how immersive it is and allow you to be up-close and personal with the birds. The entirety of the place is somewhat small, so it doesn't take too long to go through the whole exhibit. But still worth-while for a short day trip.

    Great Visit for All Ages
Awesome time at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. First, the Aviary is next to a beautiful park that had people walking and playing around -- beautiful neighborhood. We went toward the end of our trip so had to leave after about an hour but easily could have spent much more time there. The facility is designed to be very digestible, so you do not have to walk a ton but still get the quality and depth that the entire ecosystem has to offer. We were able to view a feeding and talk with a trainer on island canaries that was awesome. The only thing I would recommend is that the biggest room with Tropical Rainforest wildlife only has one screen that has labels of the wildlife, so I would try to do some research beforehand or have a guide on your phone so you can see what you are viewing. Would recommend for people of all ages!

Let me start with the only downside of our visit, the parking lot was closed and we had to find on street parking on a very busy Saturday. Every other aspect of our visit was nice. There was a cute show with birds flying and little animals running out on stage. Many different areas to walk through and types of birds to see. We also added an owl meet session and that was fantastic. We were able to hold the owl and ask questions and have our picture taken with him. We were not rushed and got to spend plenty of time. They do this with many of their animal ambassadors at the aviary, but they never bring one out if it doesn't want to. If in the area, this is a great place to stop, for people of all ages.

The aviary recently spent millions adding a new event center on to the building. It is clear they should be in the event center business instead of running an aviary. The grand entrance off of the parking lot is not open to visitors. After paying your $5 to park you must walk all around the building, over a goose poop covered sidewalk, then along a mud puddle covered gravel path. Hopefully you are not in a wheelchair, or have a stroller,or have mobility issues. Then you have to walk out to the street along the sidewalk. ( here is an idea, park on the public street, less expensive and closer to the entrance). Once inside, they will upsell you. Want to see a bird show? $5 per person. Go onto the parrot room? $3 per person. Up close with a penguin or owl? $99.
I could understand the event space spending and the up charges if they kept the entrance price low, but it is comparable to the Carnegie Science center, or the zoo, or the Carnegie museum, and there is much less to see at the other places. I less you are intensely interested in birds, this is not worth the money.

We weren't sure what to expect, but this is a truly beautiful aviary. The wetlands exhibit is amazing. There was a brief "rain shower" when we went inside, and the birds were clearly enjoying it. The birds in the wetlands enclosure are used to people, and you can get up fairly close, and drop fish to the penguins and other birds. The rainforest enclosure is also great--some stunning birds there, and we enjoyed the penguins, as well as the eagles, owls, condors, and so many other birds. So many gorgeous birds, and good educational exhibits, too. Well worth the visit!

I have waited my entire life to see a Cock on the Rock. Not only did we see this particular bird, but a lot of other birds that are very hard to see in the wild. I lived in Australia and was very surprised to a Frogmouth Tawny, and a Guam King Fisher. This is not the only reason to see this place, you can watch them feed the flamingos, and watch the staff feed the swallows swooping catching worms in the air. The spaces are open and very personal. This is a very cheap place to visit, allow about 2 hours or more to see the whole facility.

This mostly indoor aviary was quite enjoyable. We spent about two hours here on a rainy afternoon. The Aviary is divided into sections based on habitat. The birds are beautiful, and if you are not in a rush, spend time in each section, watching and appreciating nature. I somehow thought that 'National' implied it to be larger and more extensive, not that it is so small either, just was expecting something that might require most of my day. There are very informative animal sessions, check the schedule. There are also some private/paid sessions available, which looked most interesting, but we did not do these.

While I enjoyed my visit to the aviary and learned some interesting things about birds, I’m not sure it was a good value. Admission was rather high considering the size of the aviary, then you paid more for any of the special shows (and then they asked for donations at the end of the show!). I had a short 1-1/2 hour window to explore and this fit the bill.

What a treat to view so many birds from all around the globe in their natural habitats without barriers! This aviary is a treasure of bird environments, with rooms to walk in and through, and even opportunities to feed the penguins (for an additional fee). The interesting gift shop goes beyond standard knickknacks, making for a pleasant end to the time spent there – plan on 2 hours to see it all. Tickets are not cheap and you must reserve your time, yet it is such good value.
