Issued in 1966 by REPRISE Records, NANCY IN LONDON (R/RS-6221) was Nancy Sinatra's third LP. The version of "Friday's Child" here is different from the single that peaked at #36 on Billboard's Top 100 chart. In 1967, "Summer Wine" was released as the 'B' Side of Nancy's #1 Adult Contemporary hit, "Sugar Town." Its highest Billboard pop ranking was #49.
RANDOM NOTES
With "On Broadway," you can hear her dad's vocal influence. Nancy punches some words, stresses certain phrases and improvs before the fade, remaking this song in a Sinatra style. "Step Aside," with its jangly piano, is country all the way. Augmented by chorus and strings, it's a definite "Boots Were Made For Walkin'" throwback. "Summer Wine," a duet with album producer Lee Hazlewood, is the ballad of a naivé cowboy taken advantage of by a beverage-bearing siren who relieves her victim of money and prized silver spurs once he's lulled to sleep.
Nancy's cover of "Wishin' and Hopin'" is competent, but it lacks the verve of Dusty Springfield's original. A rockin' horn-driven band helps out on "The More I See You." Not sure what to make of "Hutchinson Jail" beyond the place being too darn cold in winter. Bluesy "Friday's Child" wastes no time in establishing that it's about a homely loser, a quitter of zero ambition who meekly accepts her miserable lot.

I have a special fondness for "Boots," Nancy Sinatra's debut album, but "Nancy in London" is probably her best album, although none of the songs especially prove the title in any significant way. This remastered version makes this point obvious by tacking on four additional tracks including her title songs for the films "You Only Live Twice" and "Tony Rome" along with "Life's a Trippy Thing" the "other" song with Daddy Dearest (and "100 Years" is probably the best of that bunch anyway). Nancy Sinatra always tried to sing a lot of different songs, which explains why you get from "On Broadway," and "I Can't Grow Peaches on a Cherry Tree" on the same side of the album. "Summer Wine" is the second best of her duets with Lee Hazzlewood (after "Some Velvet Morning") and "Friday's Child" is one of her best vocal works (compare it with the "Wishin' and Hopin'" to see the contrast and what the lady could do when she put her mind to it). The other thing I came away from listening to this album again was the realization that Lee Hazzlewood wrote lots of her songs besides their duets: "Friday's Child," "100 Years," "Tony Rome," and "The Last of the Secret Agents" from just this album alone. I always liked their duets best of all, but now I am impressed with his abilities as a songwriter of such a wide variety of songs. How come I never noticed this before? Could it have something to do wtih those white go-go boots Nancy was always wearing? Yeah, that is probably it...

This album arrived with the cover in what looked to be the original shrinkwrap, with the platter itself and the slip cover wrapped separately. Great service. It will look great in my music room, next time I have a Nancy theme.

This is supposed to be remastered, but her vocals emit from the right speaker with instrumentals and backup vocals on the left with the first 11 songs. The last 4 are equalled out. I don't get it. Otherwise, the quality of the sound is great, and it brings back many great memories of my early youth.

Arguably the greatest album that Nancy has ever recorded. Chuffed to bits to have a copy on vinyl. Not a filler track on it (a filler track is a sub standard track to fill out an album which was common practice in the sixties) 5 stars
