Nabil Bentaleb: Newcastle United sign Schalke midfielder on loan

Newcastle have signed Schalke midfielder Nabil Bentaleb on loan until the end of the season, with an option to make the deal permanent.

The Algeria international joined the German club from Tottenham initially on loan, before signing a four-year deal in February 2017.

He made 66 appearances for Spurs in two and a half seasons and has scored 19 goals in 97 games for Schalke.

"I'm very happy to come back to the Premier League," the 25-year-old said.

"The project really interested me. I wanted absolutely to come back to the Premier League. The coach had some trust in me and the club also - I saw that straight away - and I think it's the perfect move for me."

Newcastle lose Dummett and Willems for season

Bentaleb was disciplined by Schalke and removed from their first-team squad in March 2019 and has not played for them this season.

"The fact that he's played in the Premier League before helps, because we know that he can play and knows what the demands of the Premier League are," said Magpies boss Steve Bruce.

"He's gone from the Premier League to Schalke and played in the Champions League as well, so we're delighted to get him. It's a great signing."

Do you get a kick out of posting such absolute garbage ?

There are a few top Clubs like City, Chelsea, Spurs, and Arsenal?, that would love to have their fans show the passion and loyalty that the Geordies do for their Club.... and that even during a time when they have probably the worst owner in the Premier League.

What is the point of having reserve team players if they don't play when a main squad member gets injured? Surely that's the main reason for having a reserve squad. Clubs dipping into the transfer market everytime there's an injury annoys me, use the youngsters and they might just surprise you..

Talented player, no doubt. But always been suspect in terms of attitude. Bruce obviously thinks he can buck that trend. Good luck to him. He'll need it.

I really liked Nabi when he was a Spurs player, but things didn't work out for him after a management change and he left. Wish him all the best at Newcastle.

Spurs reminds me of my old school team. We did win a couple of games but when the new teacher Mr Doom took over our team, we all started to pretend we were injured and some wanted to play for the girls team. We eventually got relegated and Mr Doom moved to Portugal as a kids entertainer.

NUFC have a No 9 who has scored one goal in half a season. Can't keep relying on defenders to score the only goal of a game. Sign a bliddy striker afore it's too late!

He's getting close to his last chance if he wants to make something of his talent.... won't cost a fortune to try him on loan for a few months...maybe he's grown up?

This lad is a big risk for Bruce, because he has been a problem for Schalke and he is not allowed to even train with the other players. Bentaleb could change however and solve Newcastle's midfield problems. His record in Germany is decent played 59 games, scored 12 goals and has 8 assists. His value is down to £4m according to info providers. A bargain if he performs to his best ability.

Always played well while at Spurs. Was a bit harsh when we moved him on. A very shrewd signing in my view. Solidity and a bit of guile from deep positions.

Saw him play at Man City in the Champions League drubbing last year and he was the standout player in an otherwise mediocre outfit. Always calm and composed on the ball and rarely gave it away. Talent needs a bigger stage for sure. At 25 he should be growing up a bit so if he can sort out the off field issues I think Toon have potentially got themselves a great midfield playmaker.

As a spurs fan, at the time I didn’t understand why we sold him considering the weakness of our holding midfielders as he had a lot of talent. But sounds like there is a bit of an attitude problem which could explain a lot.

Hope he is a hit at Newcastle (except in the games against us ;) )

Not sure we need this lad. Midfield wasn't the issue. It's up front where we need serious investment. And a new left back now Willems and Dummett are out long term.

Also isn't it about time these trolling idiots crawled back under their rock. Or the BBC actually monitored their forums properly and kicked people off for deliberately being offensive
