For reasons still unknown to the NXT Universe, there are two people at the TakeOver announce desk pretending to be commentators.

The pandemic has affected WWE in a lot of ways. Ways in which it has never been affected before. Wrestlers and employees have been afforded the opportunity to stay at home should they not want to risk the health of themselves or their families by traveling and competing. Roman Reigns took that option for a while, as did Sami Zayn.

Those two didn't have the option of working remotely like some others in the company. Most notably, NXT's announcers. Beth Phoenix has been working from home for most of 2020, lending her voice to the black and gold brand without actually being there in person. New signing Wade Barrett did that along with her for NXT TakeOver 31 tonight.

What's odd is WWE's attempt to make fans think the pair was at the table, or at least that's what the plan seemed to be. Once the show had begun, fans started to notice Vic Joseph, who was at the show to lead the announce team in person, was flanked by a man and a woman. Even though neither of his faux announce colleagues look anything like Barrett or Phoenix, it seems that they're there to make fans forget two-thirds of the team is calling the action from home.

If that was indeed the intention, then WWE probably should have picked someone with a beard to be Barrett's body double, and someone with blonde hair to replicate Phoenix. Some fans have been speculating that the red-haired stand-in is Sasha Banks or NXT UK Champion Kay Lee Ray. Both of those scenarios feel unlikely.

Another theory suggests that the two are announcing in a different language for international viewers. However, their mouths don't appear to be moving, and fans who have switched to alternate commentary claims the voices are not coming from the mystery pair they can see on screen. They also disappear whenever Joseph performs a piece-to-camera between matches. Triple H is often open with his decisions in NXT, perhaps he will be the one to clean this up in the coming hours and days.
