Editor's Take

Nick Spagnoli is a senior editor for U.S. News Best Cars.

From the leather-trimmed seats and steering wheel to the silky smooth ride, comfort is king in the Lexus NX. I spent some time with the F Sport Handling trim and came away happy, for the most part. The F Sport Handling is the sportiest model in the NX lineup, and though it provides a more engaging ride than the base model and the NX 350h hybrid, it's no sports sedan. I wouldn't buy this Lexus if you're looking for excitement. The upgraded turbo-four engine is strong enough for most driving situations, but it groaned a bit on steep hills. While handling was decent, it can't compare to classmates like the BMW X3. The cabin is well-built and high-end but simple in its styling. It's also roomy enough for four adults to ride comfortably. The infotainment system is easy to use, and though it requires too many steps to adjust some functions, the climate controls are always on the touch screen and easy to access. For the price, the NX is a solid option in the class.

Is the 2024 Lexus NX a Good SUV?

The 2024 NX is a fine luxury compact SUV. It has two rows of welcoming seats, a well-constructed cabin and fairly intuitive infotainment features. Its ride quality is agreeable, and fuel economy is impressive for the class. The NX handles confidently as well, but it's not much fun to drive otherwise, partly due to its underpowered base engine. A turbocharged engine is optional, and while it is more formidable, many class rivals are still quicker.

We review the Lexus NX Hybrid separately.

Should I Buy the 2024 Lexus NX?

The NX is appealing if you're shopping for a luxury SUV to suit a small family. Its sub-$40,000 base price and long list of standard features means it's a solid value, too. However, you may want to look at rivals if fun behind the wheel, interior opulence or cargo space are primary considerations. The BMW X3, Genesis GV70 and Acura RDX check several boxes that the NX doesn't.

Pricing

How Much is a 2024 Lexus NX?

The 2024 Lexus NX 250 starts at $39,055, and this base model comes with a long list of standard features, a 203-horsepower engine and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional for $1,600. Individual options and packages range from a couple hundred dollars to about $3,000. The NX 350 retails for $42,815 and comes standard with all-wheel drive and a 275-horsepower turbocharged engine, but it doesn't offer any other features above the base model. The NX 350 F Sport starts at $47,915. It has sporty upgrades like an adaptive suspension, 20-inch wheels, aluminum pedals and unique design appointments.

Which Is the Best Lexus NX Model to Buy?

The base model has a long list of standard features, but we recommend spending a few thousand dollars more for the NX 350, which comes with the more powerful engine. It also gives you all-wheel drive and access to options that aren't available on the NX 250, including genuine leather upholstery.

2024 Lexus NX Versus the Competition

Lexus NX vs. Acura RDX

Alongside the NX, the Acura RDX is one of the least-expensive luxury compact SUVs. These Japanese rivals stake their appeal on value, with tons of features for the price. The RDX boasts more cargo space than the NX, it's a little livelier to drive, and its base engine is punchier than either of the NX's. The Lexus has a slight edge in cabin quality and infotainment usability, but we don't think that's enough to vault it over the Acura.

Lexus NX vs. BMW X3

The BMW X3 is a top pick in the class on the strength of its performance. The X3's base engine is fuel-efficient but still delivers impressive acceleration, and there are three other choices that rise through the high 300-horsepower range to more than 500 horses. It handles like a sporty small car and maintains a posh ride. The X3 rates well in the segment for passenger and cargo space, and there's plenty to like about the cabin and infotainment. This BMW's main hang-up is that it's among the costlier vehicles in the class.

NX Interior: Makes the Grade

2024 NX Interior Quality

The cabin of the 2024 Lexus NX is full of top-notch materials, and everything feels solidly put together. The design is attractive, if a little simple, and it's not as outright elegant as some rivals are.

2024 NX Infotainment, Bluetooth and Navigation

Both of the touch screens in the NX feature crisp graphics and respond quickly to your inputs. This system is generally pretty easy to operate, but it can take some time to get acclimated with the menu structure. Additionally, while the cabin isn't completely devoid of physical controls, a few extra ones for common adjustments would be nice.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 9.8-inch touch screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10-speaker stereo, a Wi-Fi hot spot, navigation, satellite radio, voice recognition and Bluetooth
  • Available infotainment features: a 14-inch touch screen, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound stereo and a digital key
  • Additional standard features: a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, proximity keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control and remote start
  • Other available features: a moonroof, a panoramic roof and ambient interior lighting

2024 NX Cargo Space

This Lexus has 22.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which fold down flat to create 46.9 cubic feet of room. Those values are below average for a luxury compact SUV, but the cargo area is wide and open.

How Many People Does the 2024 NX Seat?

The NX seats five people. Upfront, there's plenty of head- and legroom for taller people, as well as good outward visibility for the driver, and the seats are very comfortable and supportive. The second row is nearly as spacious, but the upright seats aren't as well-cushioned.

2024 NX and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats. There's also a tether anchor for the rear middle seat, and you can borrow lower anchors from the adjoining seats when they're not in use. All of the anchors are easy to find and utilize.

NX Performance: Capable Cruiser

2024 NX Engine

The base 2024 Lexus NX 250 comes with a 203-horsepower four-cylinder engine. This mill is adequate for everyday driving and can get you moving in traffic without issue, but it feels short on power for highway merging or passing. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission functions smoothly, but the powertrain overall seems buzzy at times.

The NX 350 employs a 275-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes most driving situations more bearable. There's a little turbo lag at initial throttle input, but power comes on strong after that.

2024 NX Gas Mileage

The NX 250 with front-wheel drive gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, which is excellent for a luxury compact SUV. The all-wheel-drive NX 250 gets 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, while the NX 350 (which comes standard with all-wheel drive) gets 21/28 mpg city/highway.

2024 NX Ride and Handling

The NX has composed handling, but it lacks enough steering feedback or agility to feel truly sporty. The NX F Sport Handling (a sport-tuned model) has an adaptive suspension with performance dampers that liven things up a little. That upgrade also enhances what's an already plush ride in the standard model, soaking up road bumps easily.
