He briefly worked with the Tom T. Hall band in the early 70's,
but by 1972 he had started his solo career.
He placed 45 songs on the country chart from 1972 to 1989,
20 were top ten hits, additionally 14 made the top forty.

released in 1979, with no charted singles.
Later same year moved to Epic Records which released his first album for them 'Johnny Rodriguez'
Which garnered a top 10 hit - 'Down On The Rio Grande'. He totaled 20 charted single with Epic - 1979 - 85.
And recorded on various other labels after,
