I first saw this movie when I was a young girl, and loved it then, and loved it today when I watched it again after 50 years. Susan Hayward was such a beautiful woman and such a great actress. Dana Andrews, well, his is after all, Dana Andrews. To leave out the father would be a mistake. How many of us would love to have had a father like him. Great movie.

better-than-average war-time romance/melodrama -1950

I usually find melodramas from the 1940s-1950s like this rather boring, but this was better than average and kept my attention throughout. I think that all the key plot themes have been recycled many times. What sets this apart is the quality acting -- Susan Hayward and Dana Andrews were both good (hard to believe that Hayward was nominated for an Oscar for this role though!). The acting standout for me was the father -- Robert Keith (Brian Keith's father), who brought humor and fatherly compassion to his role.

In addition to the quality of acting, the other highlight was the scenic backdrop of NYC (and I checked -- it was at least partly shot in NYC). The cinematography, music, dialogue, and editing are all quite good. Somehow, it all worked together to make this an enjoyable film experience! I am always searching around for free films to watch from the 1930s-1970s on Amazon Prime -- especially ones, like this, that I had never heard of before.

"I was a NICE girl, wasn't I?" So asks Susan Hayward, more than once. Forget Ingrid Bergman. Susan Hayward at her best, and this is her best, could act any other American actress off the screen. Having seen and loved this movie on TCM, I was one of the many begging to have it on DVD, and, by gosh, our wish was granted! Dana Andrews, also, was a great and greatly unappreciated actor, and the combination is splendid. I do wonder, however, if some cuts were made in the DVD version. Among others, I seem to remember a longer scene in which Susan Hayward's father makes it clear that his marriage to her mother involved the metaphorical shotgun. Also, watching the movie this time through, it seemed as if a few too many scenes took place in Grand Central Station or on Hudson River line trains, where the scenery took one's attention away from the lovers. Altogether, though, a sound five-star movie, and the rare kind of movie that is better in black-and-white than it would have been in color.

A nicely done, post-war romantic drama staring the versatile and vivacious Susan Hayward. A story within a story common to movies of this era, the backdrop is a love affair between two people at the onset of World War II. This is classical, quality, late forties fare which are notable for lacking the often crude salaciousness of late 20th and current 21st century movies. Although I like Dana Andrews, in this film his acting style comes off as palatable, but a little stale. The real performance, as usual, is turned in by Miss Hayward, whose petite and adorable sexiness is always a welcome visual distraction. Being a romantic drama, this film will generally be more appealing to women, but from a man's point of view it represents a fair glimpse of American life and the common travails of the years immediately following WWII.

I enjoyed the story but I didn't believe for one moment that Susan Hayward was a college student. She was too mature for that role. Janet Leigh or someone her age would have convinced me. But I enjoyed the story.
Dana Andrews also was miscast. But was a fine actor in many other films. The song, also the title of the movie, is very lovely.

La guerra e' il tema che pervade tutto il film dall'inizio alla fine, come un'ombra che pesa sul cuore, un incubo. Ammirevole Dana A. che parte con il sorriso sulle labbra e la speranza di far ritorno, e l' immensa tristezza della sua ragazza. Un film che fa meditare: in guerra tutti perdiamo qualcosa o qualcuno, anche coloro che pensano di averla vinta.

Si tenéis mucho interés en la película sin importaros estas cosas, adelante, pero entre gastar 13 euros en un dvd-r tostado y comprar un pirata en un "top manta" no aprecio mucha diferencia. La durabilidad de estos soportes es menor que los prensados de fábrica y los extras nulos (como simpre, solo subtítulos en español y "aditivo" más que justifique el desembolso). El plastificado (también casero) llegó destrozado y la carcasa también (los transportistas no cuidan tanto los paquetes como para enviar DVD en una bolsa de plástico sin ninguna protección).
