The Bounty leaves Portsmouth in 1787. Its destination: to sail to Tahiti and load bread-fruit. Captain Bligh will do anything to get there as fast as possible, using any means to keep up a strict discipline. When they arrive at Tahiti, it is like a paradise for the crew, something completely different than the living hell aboard the ship. On the way back to England, officer Fletcher Christian becomes the leader of a mutiny.

Idk why this disturbs me so much but the actress who played the stock ~native girl used as a sex object by colonialist sailors~ character in the 1935 version of Mutiny on the Bounty married Marlon Brando, who then starred in this (the remake), then he promptly divorced her and married the actress who played the SAME native girl in the 1962 remake? A massive historical epic the likes of which were produced excessively in the early 1960s, with highly inflated budgets and troubled productions, contributing to the inevitable decline of the Golden Age of classic Hollywood cinema. This remake of the 1935 Best Picture winner is overlong, oversized and a chore to get through, with a rightfully dismissed performance by Marlon Brando front and center—not to mention the fact that this somehow snagged another Best Picture nomination despite being very middle-of-the-road even in terms of historical epics. Some nice visuals, a sprawling score and good cinematography are not enough to sweep you through these three hours of ever-increasing boredom; despite a major climax, the film is too unfocused to be worth more…

While filming "Mutiny on the Bounty", Marlon Brando split 52 pairs of pants, had a plane flown into Tahiti full of hams and Champagne and one night rowed out into the lagoon with a 5 gallon tub of ice cream he ate while the director begged him to stop from shore.

Why I watched this one? I have been reading about this movie for years. Like Cleopatra, this one cost a fortune to make, got a boatload of Oscar nominations, and did well at the box office......but got pretty bad reviews, lost a ton of money, was a nightmare to make, starred a moody superstar and went down in Hollywood history as one of biggest disasters of all-time. So I figured I would finally watch it.

I had to rewatch my favorite mutiny on the bounty movie and I’m still or even more in love with it than before.
Brando is totally killing it with one of his most underrated perfomances ever. I simply have no idea how he didn’t got an Oscar nomination for this because this was absolute perfection. Especially when his characters got the focus in the last hour.
The scenes on Tahiti are totally unteaches in matter of effort, originality and true beauty. It feels simply untouched and Brandos and the love story between him and Tarita is definitely the most legendary of film history. Still after all this time and however much the media wanted tarita to say a bad word…

Die Meuterei auf der Bounty - eine der vielleicht legendärsten Seefahrts-Geschichten in der wohl größten Verfilmung eben dieser.
Auch wenn ich die Geschichte natürlich kannte, habe ich bisher nur die Verfilmung mit Mel Gibson und Anthony Hopkins gesehen.
Dieses Wochenende war nun der perfekte Anlass um dieses Seefahrer-Epos endlich nachzuholen.
Schon alleine wegen der Inszenierung, inklusive Ouvertüre und Intermission fühlt sich dieser Film wie ein Monumentalfilm auf hoher See an.
Auch die Bilder unterstützen diesen monumentalen Eindruck und die Laufzeit von 3 Stunden tut ihr Übriges dazu.

Well-paced (for a 3+ hour movie) Lewis Milestone version of the story of mean old Capt Bligh and the crew that finally has enough of him.
Trevor Howard's effective enough as Bligh, but he's a bit of a cookie-cutter villain and he's frankly totally outplayed here by an almost hilarious Marlon Brando as Christian Fletcher. This is his show all the way, and he gives a pleasantly non-Methody performance as the insufferably entitled fop brought on board at the last moment before sailing to be second in command.
His character is an interesting one as well in that beyond his callow personality, he's smart - managing a number of great digs right in Bligh's face that stop just short of…
