Had been looking for a copy of Musical Shapes since mine was stolen ten years ago. Carlene's backing band on it were none other than Rockpile! The second album is almost as good, so it is a worthwhile purchase for the collector.
Like others who have reviewed this rockin' country gem, I TOTALLY agree that such a 'classic' should have been reissued in CD form many moons ago. Why do record companies prefer to put out the stuff first which is little better than dross? Anyway, as a true fan of the Cash family, I was prepared to pay a bit over the odds for this item when it came up -- not the usual three figure sum in pounds its usually offered at, I hasten to add -- for just half of this Collection which I once owned on vinyl. So thanks to the little Demon Records concern for showing some real sense on that score. Carlene Carter -- or to use her proper surname Smith, because she was born out of a failed marriage between Carl Smith and June Carter (the latter of course latching onto the legendary J. Cash Esq.), first joined the Carter Family as they toured the world with the Johnny Cash Show (versions of 'Ring of Fire' and 'Baby Ride Easy' are both aired here), but she eventually boke off to go solo. Here its the influence of both Nick Lowe -- Carlene's one time husband -- as both producer and song writer, plus the musicianship of Dave Edmunds that help drive the whole thing along. Carlene's second album, 'Blue Nun', featured as the other part of this 28 track stack, is only just another bonus. Don't wait yonks for some bigger company to put this stuff out -- I doubt they ever will. Try to acquire a copy at a reasonable price -- they do exist somewhere in the lists of either specialist dealer shops, or from Amazon and Ebay. Like me, you certainly won't be disappointed, and good on yer the bloke who sold it to me from 'A Disc-in-the Hand' who are based in Glasgow!
This is a Terrific CD. Tracks appear to not be available on iTunes. Musical Shapes is a Combination of standards and songs supposedly written by Carlene herself, though all bear the earmarks of Nick Lowe songs (secretly the writer?). The Blue Nun portion of the album not so good (with the exception of a serviceable version of Lowe's "Too Many Tears", but this is still Well worth the money paid.
This has always been my favourite Carlene album. The material is top notch, the backing from the fantasticRockpile is 5 star and her vocals are sassy, sensitive and alluring. Why this album has not been reissued in a remastered form amazes me when we all see so much dross reissued with supposed "rare" bonus tracks etc. This is a true candidate for the" full monty" reissue/remaster treatment.
I love it, if you like Carlene, Rockpile or just top quality music go buy the damn thing (price a bit hefty though)
