Don't be misled by the subtitle "Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck". This is an eclectic collection which just happens to begin with the attractive set of variations by JPS. I bought the CD for the "Elegy" by Thalben-Ball, a strikingly beautiful piece which Ms Balsom plays on the flugelhorn. The collection is significant because of the performance of "Okna" by Petr Eben, a major contribution to the repertoire of both the trumprt and the organ. Her accompanist, Quentin Thomas plays superbly throughout. I truly believe that Ms. Balsom is the rightful heir to the mantle of Maurice Andre. Remember that beautiful, lyrical ease with which he played? She has that same quality in her playing, not a phony trick, but true artistry. I almost made it through the review without mentioning her great physical beauty. Judging from the cover photograph, she is not unaware, either.

Wow! Alison Balsom is incredible in her command of the various instruments she plays here. As a trumpet player myself (and we are both left-handed, but that is where the similarity ends) I know how difficult some of the passages are to turn from technical exercise into wonderful music; and she does everything necessary to pull off that task. Highly recommended!

She is an extremely accomplished trumpet player who is a pleasure to listen to. I would be pleased to hear anything she plays.

These EMI recordings are such poor quality they do not do justice to the artists. I have had this problem with EMI recordings in the past.

With repertoire of this kind, I'm honestly unable to comment on Ms. Balsom's playing, so churning and tiresome do I find the compositions. More than half the album is of this kind, which in my middle-brow way I must categorize, however unfairly, as material I feel sure I won't be listening to again. As with everything this trumpeter does, there seems to be sureness, mastery, deftness, purity of tone--but in the service of compositions that seemingly go nowhere. Unfortunately, "sampling" any substantial classical or modern music gives no clue as to what's in store. If this type of thing is in fact your thing, I feel sure you'll be happy. As for me, this disc goes on the shelf of others I call "Try it again someday--maybe you'll grow into it." Never, never say "I'll never like this kind of music." Just because it's wretched "background music" doesn't mean it won't repay attentive listening.

Mixture from baroque to modern. I was expecting mostly Bach. Talent and sound quality is excellent.

This genius of the trumpet must be heard to be believed. The most amazing tones, shades and subtlety, how can a mere mortal achieve this.
Spine tingling, emotional and truly magnificent.

Musique pour trompette et orgue...
Reviewed in France on August 26, 2015

Gelungenes Debut
Reviewed in Germany on November 25, 2013
