JULY 5 - AUGUST 14 • SANTA BARBARA, CA

Dear Friends, It is with relief and joy, that I welcome your return for the 2021 Summer School and Festival. We have missed you and look forward to seeing you here, on our beautiful Miraflores campus, and in the community at performances again. We have planned a robust summer program based on four important priorities. We will: Provide a transformative experience for each fellow who participates. Following the summer, we want every fellow to feel they are leaving a better musician than when they arrived. Provide a safe environment for all. Push ourselves to present the Festival curriculum and performance schedule outside of the norm. We are open to new and creative ideas and we embrace this opportunity to evolve our practices. Deliver our programs in a financially sustainable way by using our resources responsibly and carefully balancing our budget. Our Summer Festival manages to incorporate private lessons, chamber coachings, sideby-side performances, competitions, orchestra concerts, the London Symphony Orchestra Keston MAX auditions and Innovation Seminars, and much more. The Fast Pitch and Digital Challenge were so successful online that we will continue to use that format again and in the future. We put our fellows in the driver’s seat of providing digital content and introducing projects that will seed the industry with new ideas. Our Vocal Institute will begin a modern day Liederabend (Evening of Song) under Beth Morrison Projects’ creative forces. James Darrah will produce and direct Mirrorflores, cinematically filmed opera scenes that will be shared online. Thanks to our partners at the Granada Theatre, we will enjoy events there due to their willingness to blossom back to life. We look forward to showcasing our fellows on their grand stage. I share all this with you in the spirit of constant adaptability to deliver on our mission. We have so much appreciation for your participation. Thanks in advance for joining us. Sending my best, Scott

“I was interested in bringing the term and form Liederabend out of the insularity of the conservatory and into the public experience,” says Beth Morrison in OPERATURGY,

“I feel this is a once-in-alifetime moment for an entire generation of passionate artists to demonstrate power in new leadership, vocalize and take action on the boldest of ideas, solutions, and visions for the form that haven’t already been explored. I want to have an active part in that kind of growth for the form with others–push opera further into real cinematic content…”

“I wanted to update it to the twentyfirst century by presenting music written by living composers and adding a visual component by pairing composers with designers, while still concentrating on music and words.”

James Darrah creative director William Long conductor Operatic arias and scenes ranging from baroque to bel canto will come to life on the beautiful campus of Music Academy of the West as a film.
