I drove 3 hours just to see this place.... and it was better than I had expected!. As an example, most places add a small display about the pre-European inhabitants ... this museum had several ROOMS, with great detail about life and culture. I learned a lot here -- did not know that Florida belonged to the French for a while.... Great museum.

I love museums, and have traveled to many states and Europe to visit them. Overall, I would compare the Florida museum as their equal, and it's free.
The quality of the dioramas was exceptional, with vivid colors, extremely life-like figures, and inventive staging. The range of artifacts throughout the building was astounding
The pre-history and history of Florida is fascinating, and it was well represented here. A bonus was an exhibition of Florida landscapes with a good selection of works by the Florida Highwaymen.

Visited here on a weekday and had a great time! The museum was not crowded and parking is very easy at the parking garage next door. You can visit the museum gift shop for a free parking token to use in the machine as you leave the garage. We enjoyed all the museum exhibits and the video at the start of the museum. The museum docents were all friendly and helpful.

Amazing Museum about the history of Florida. We had a few hours to explore Tallahassee with my college bound daughter and her friend. My daughter and I are history buffs so we thought it would be fun to go here. We first thought is was a cute and “hokey” museum, but we soon were totally immersed by the amazing displays with in depth look at the various periods of Florida and National History. Staff were very knowledge and gave deeper explanations if you asked questions. We spent only about 90 minutes because of our schedule, but we could have easily spent several hours! The museum and parking are all free for visitors. If you like history, do not pass this museum up!

Excellent history museum, and the best part is that it's free. Young and old will enjoy the artifacts and stories told in this museum. Great for history buffs and history novices alike. if you're a Floridian, this is a must. If you're not a Floridian, then you'll still enjoy this one. The museum traces Florida's roots as a Spanish colony/British colony/US territory and then US state. Very informative. You can spend hours here--and we did.

An outstanding, comprehensive museum capturing Florida from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Every exhibit was well-researched and displayed. Although the pedestrian flow is a little confusing (I looked at the Civil War before the prehistoric mammals), if you pay closer attention you can probably direct yourself more attentively. I spent 2 hours here, and I am a seasoned museum goer.
Note: there is a cafe off the lobby, but its hours are 12 to 2. Admission is free. Parking free also with a token obtainable at the gift shop.

Great Museum! The people there are very knowledgeable and friendly. I knew practically nothing of the history of the state until I went there. I left feeling like I had a much better grasp on the state's interesting history. And the kids loved it!

This museum, near the state capitol, has wonderful displays of the very interesting history of the state of Florida. Free but donations accepted (encouraged). A lot of information on Native American groups that have lived in the region. Display captions in English and in Spanish. Well worth a visit!

We took our grandkids aged 13, 9 and 5 to the museum. My husband and I were impressed from the start. The exhibits were well done, interactive and very interesting. The grandkids, all boys, lived it. There was something for all of them enjoy. The museum staff were great and walked the museum to let us know when an activity or theater show was beginning. I have been to the big museums in major cities but this museum ranks as a favorite.

What day is free to enter the museum

It was free every day, though they “invite” people to make donations of no specified amounts. Most who entered the day we went did not seem to donate.

There are several nearby parking garages, even some street parking if you're lucky enough to get a spot during a business day. Kleman Plaza is the easiest parking garage to get in and out of and is a short walk to it.

How long does it take to go through the whole building?

it all depends on your level of interest in the various exhibits, as others have aptly described. 3-4 hours would be completely adequate, I'd think. that would include time-outs for a snack and some sit down time to relax and take it in. the exhibits are comprehensive and FL has a long convoluted history. enjoy!
