Murder at My Door is a classic example of the 'dysfunctional suburban family collapsing in on itself' variety of tv movie, featuring an emmy-worthy Judith Light as a bitter, emotionally repressed mom in denial, and Johnny Galecki basically playing David from Roseanne, but crazier.
As events get more stressful, more shocking family secrets bubble to the surface: dad is a recovering alcoholic; they had another son who died; mom had an affair; the little kid wets the bed; the possible-murderer son made a bunch of 900 number calls and ran up the phone bill; it's a hot mess! No wonder they're all constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. There's also some delicately implied backstory around how Johnny Galecki…
Murder At My Door is a made for television film featuring Johnny Galecki in the dying light of Roseanne and Judith Light. It's a simple story with a fascinating plot that leads one to ponder. Since it is a low budget, TV movie it surely has it's flaws, but it does pack quite a punch.
Teddy McNair (Johnny Galecki) has come back home after a semester in college to surprise his sister at her birthday party, but what his parents don't know is that he has decided not to return. His mother Irene (Judith Light) and his father Ed (R.H. Thomson) are displeased when they eventually learn of his intention. Ed is thoroughly upset with Teddy, but the two of…
truly a wild ride from start to finish like… they really managed to throw every trope in there pertaining to things that happen in one’s childhood that could potentially result in fucking someone up later in life.
anyways I’m always here for judith light
Grimmer and bleaker than expected, especially for a movie where Judith Light has that hairdo the entire time. Movies like this – even theatrical releases – often opt for easy answers, and this avoids them. My one real complaint is not enough Grace Zabriskie, and that’s something I think in almost anything Grace does.
I wondered if the Meryl Streep movie Before and After inspired it, but even eight months months after that movie’s release I doubt anyone remembered it well enough to do a TV take on it. They do make for a good double feature, in case anyone out there wants an afternoon of “Is My Son a Killer? Am I Actually a Good Parent?” movies. Go for it!
Johnny Big Bang Theory plays whiny serial killer well in this made for TV melodrama about what to do if your son turns out to be a failed art student cum serial killer. Judith Light, aka Judge Donnelly from SVU, stars as the mom. She has some insane monologue at the beginning about how before parenthood she cared about war and the environment, implying she doesn't now? Sure. This is loaded with backstory, like a dead twin, an alcoholic dad, a grandmother's cottage...it's all too much, but the overstuffed hysteria makes this nonsense sing.
Recommended to watch with a brew or some pills on hand to "enhance" the experience.
I think the overall story was intriguing but hopped a bit as to why he did what he did. It's explained but got a little over the top toward the end.
A rare murder mystery movie of the week that bores. Seen my fair share of dumb, but fun entries, but it's truly odd if they're downright dull.

It's incredibly camp for the most part. It tries way too hard to be good, and in turn hurts the film. Though I did enjoy Johnny Galecki at times as the film's sociopath.
