I was looking forward to this French thriller since it starred Danielle Darrieux and Jean Servais, and was directed by Etienne Perrier. It was based on a book by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac from whose work came the films "Les Diaboliques" and "Vertigo" ("D'entre les morts").
This one I'm afraid is not quite in the same league, but you won't be bored. They set up an intriguing premise, but when the final "surprise ending" unfolds, it is quite an implausible one with a number of holes. Also, the last "enigmatic" fade out may be a "cute" dramatic stunt, but quite a ridiculous one once you consider the time frame, adding nothing to the plot or the "mystery". I am being vague so as not to trip on spoilers.
The wide screen print offered by Video Dimensions is very good, but it is only Letterboxed, and not Anamorphic. The English subtitles offer you a choice of white or yellow, which is nice.
You could do worse, but you could also do better with two other French thrillers offered by the same company: the two Jean Gabin-as-Inspector-Maigret movies. The scripts are more solid and better structured.
The best reason to acquire this is for the pleasure of watching the rightfully legendary Danielle Darrieux. We'll never see the likes of her again
