Still Mulling This Over

So my friend had this situation with their therapist and still feels alternately puzzled and hostile about it when they consider seeing another therapist.

This person has chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia as well as anxiety and depression. Seeing a therapist on zoom through their health care provider. Minimal copay per session. Just seeking some help to try to get back on track, etc.

After a few sessions, client sleeps through appointment. Contacts therapist to apologize and reschedule. A couple of months later they are ill with a flare but don’t want to disrespect the therapist so they wait for their appointment and tell the therapist that they cannot do a full session but wanted to check in and reschedule. This uses about ten minutes of a 50 minute session.

Reschedule. Nbd client thinks. Then they are surprised to get a bill for the full amount for a missed session.

Calmly and maturely contact therapist to ask why when they did attend the session but only for a few minutes to explain they are unwell and reschedule.

Therapist says in their opinion, the client did miss the session and the billing was correct.

They definitely feel trust was broken. In hostile moments they want to ask how long they would have had to stay in the Zoom session to have been considered present?

They dropped out of therapy and haven’t been back to see anyone. Sometimes they feel they need to but it feels very unsafe.

Any suggestions?
