Product Description

A delightful tale of a housemaid who spends her days cleaning the homes of the well-to-do. Mrs. Harris or arris as pronounced in her native cockney (Angela Lansbury) epitomises her generation of honest, working-class Brits. She knows her place, though that never stops her from speaking her mind or dreaming of luxuries. Admiring a beautiful Dior gown in her employer s closet, Mrs. arris is determined to buy one of her own. Working day and night, she finally saves enough to go to Paris and visit the House of Dior, but learns that buying an original couture creation is harder than simply having the cash. After hesitation, Dior s head saleswoman Madame Colbert (Dame Diana Rigg) escorts her in and seats her next to the Marquis de Chassagne (Omar Sharif), a count who is quite taken by this friendly English woman. When her dream passes before her eyes on the beautiful store model Natasha, Mrs. arris orders the same gown for herself, but there is talk that the Dior name will be tarnished if Mrs. arris wears the exclusive design. However the sweet Mrs. arris has made many friends in Paris and all are intent on making sure her dream comes true.

We are definitely fans of Angela Lansbury so wanted to have the original to the more recently remade movie of this story.

While it would be easy to rate this story and presentation lower (3 stars), what current audiences are missing is the subtle but meaningful undertones of what this story is about - a person working for what her heart desires. Hearing her saying that she worked and saved for THREE YEARS in order to buy a Dior dress has to be a foreign concept to most of today's audience. Contrast that with the newer movie where the main character didn't go through as much effort (probably a few months) and was 'aided' by friends (bookie placed bet) and fate (government back pay).

The newer version has an enriched but more 'social' oriented story - lots of friends, added romance(s) and 'redemption' of loss from her good will to an undeserving person. However we have and will enjoy the original version for its sincere and genuine heart.

I'm so glad somebody left a review telling me that what was previously only available on VHS was now on DVD - a dinosaur technology replaced by neanderthal tech - yay! no more firing up the VCR and being forced to watch in the TV room. this really shouldn't work because of the iffily approximated accents of the supporting players. sentimental in it's conception. predictable every single second. but when you super load a show with great older actors who've acted their entire lives, it can't not work. when you actually LOVE one of the actors and ridiculously feel like you KNOW HER, you're just floating on this big cloud of sheer escapist pleasure. But really, Morley, Rigg, Shariff, and Lansbury don't have to be embarrassed by their work here. If Die Hard or the Rambo movies are your thing - you should pass on this.

This video hasn't been available for American consumers since the VHS release. When I ordered my DVD version, I thought it was an all regions blu-ray. Hopefully the new blu-ray player is updated enough to decode it. The page now identifies product as a DVD, not blu-ray. So it wasn't quite what I expected. It was ordered 2 days before Christmas and was in-transit about 6 weeks for Germany to USA.

My product says it's all regions DVD, and our Samsung blu-ray can't read it. However, all my computers have aftermarket DVD codecs installed, which were not included in Windows 8-10. My computer input to the TV does play this DVD nicely. It is not region 2, but the computer DVD codecs recognized the all-regions encoding.

In a day when so many movies focus violence or end of the world themes, it's quite refreshing to find a movie that evokes a different story (OK, yes it is an older movie but that is beside the point). The movie Mrs. 'Arris goes to Paris is a enchanting movie with a wonderful cast that delivers a fairy tale type story. If you root for the underdog, love a good old fashioned movie with a love story attached and adore the fashion industry and Paris, this movie is for you.

As a side note, why it has not been released on DVD for region 1 (USA) is beyond me! With the mounds of worthless movies being released on DVD every day, why not release one that people truly want? That said, if you can get a VHS version do so, the story is worth it.

Now my 8 year old daughter loves it too, and we BOTH want Dior dresses. ;) I love that so many good things are in the video - about treating people kindly, about mending relationships, about not judging people by their exterior. It's such a simple, but sweet story. Love it.

So this isn't really a review of the movie itself. It is a delightful story that I would recommend to anyone. Omar is his usual handsome self even when he is old.

I, we, greatly enjoyed the Lesley Manville version, which I'd give 5 stars - reduced from 6 because of some historical infelicities.
So, liking Angela Lansbury, we bought this. Doesn't have the tension of the current film and I didn't feel engaged with anyone, so I'd have to recommend against this. It's nice in its own way, but I won't watch it again.
