Belew is probably best known for his work with King Crimson and has also worked with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads and a host of others. He has also had a substantial solo career and released quite a few albums on his own over the years. In 1989 "Mr. Music" head was Belew's shot at commercial success. The album seems to be geared towards more accessible material than one might associate with Belew and in fact the single "Oh Daddy" did receive some radio and MTV airplay. When I first got this album I did not like it all that much, but it has grown on me and I can appreciate it for what it is. Most of the album is well written pop, although always with Belew's quirky nuances that make the tracks unique. Belew's guitar histrionics are more subdued here than on some other releases, but they are certainly present given a good close listen. How pleasing this album is for fans of Belew's Crimson work will probably vary, but for a good quirky pop album this one is quite satisfying.

Its great to have these two albums again, and its nice to find them packaged together on two separate discs (the same company has the Lone Rhino and Twang Bar King albums on one disc). The packaging is great: has the original liner notes, plus an essay on Adrian, a bit about his younger years, and his collaborations with David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, King Crimson, and The Bears. There's no need to critique the music (which any fan of Adrian knows is fantastic) since others have already done that. I'd just say that if these aren't in your collection yet, grab this now.

I fell for Adrian's guitar style when I heard him on David Bowie's "Pretty Pink Rose" song. Belew's playing on that one has to be heard to be believed. If you are a Hendrix fan, you will enjoy much of Belew's playing. My impression was that his Stratocaster hated him after he played that instrumental- the guitar sounds like it is being sacrificed to the Gods. Mr. Music Head is not quite up to that level. Adrians' shortcoming is that he is in love with making sound effects on the guitar. Quite fun if you are in an altered state of mind, it can get tiring after a few listens.

Chances are if your looking at this you are at least aware of Adrian Belew. If you already have heard lone rhino and twang bar don't hesitate to get this.
A little bit puzzling that this album has had so many so-so and negative reviews, some really great songs on here bad day and 1967 especially. I find this record more solid than young lions.
If your looking for some great playing (he plays 99% of all the instruments!) good lyrics and melodies then you will not be disappointed. It's a shame that Belew isn't more popular and most his stuff you have to buy used I suppose he'll always remain a musicians musician.
