ノート
Released on 15 December 1967. For the recording, group members included Jim Capaldi, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, and Dave Mason, however Mason left the band before the album was released. The album reached the number 16 position in the UK album chart on 30 December 1967, and reached number 88 in the American Billboard charts.
Considered by far the strangest and most art rock style album that Traffic released, Mr. Fantasy didn't gain much more than a cult following for Traffic at the time. Critics seemed to like the album, though, and most said it was clear that Steve Winwood and Traffic were good at putting together semi-mainstream psychedelic rock, except this album was not quite mainstream enough. By their next release, the eponymous Traffic, the band was said to have worked through that.
This album features even more horns, flutes, and less rock-style instruments than most of Traffic's future releases. The sitar was used much more in this album than any other later Traffic albums, undoubtedly because of Dave Mason's influence.
The first US version of the album on United Artists Records had a different title Heaven Is In Your Mind and a different cover that featured 3 members of the group without Dave Mason. The title was quickly changed back to Mr. Fantasy but the new cover remained until Island Records re-issued the UK version in the late 1970s. Both the US and UK editions of the album were released in substantially different stereo and mono mixes.
For the original US edition the group changed the album substantially. The song order was changed and a short looping snippet of the group's November 1967 single "Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush" was added between most of the songs. The US LP also added three songs from the group's UK singles, "Paper Sun" and "Hole In My Shoe" and "Smiling Phases" (b-side) while deleting two Dave Mason songs "Hope I Never Find Me There" and "Utterly Simple." The final track on the US album "We're A Fade, You Missed This' is actually the ending of the full length version of "Paper Sun." For most of the songs there are significant differences between the stereo and mono mixes. One song in particular, "Giving to You", actually was released in 3 different versions, including similar mono and stereo versions from the U.K. album, plus a very different mono U.K. b-side mix, which also was later included on the U.S. mono LP. The special U.K. b-side mix includes lyrics sung by Winwood during the introduction which are not heard on any other version.

- Picked this up for peanuts in excellent condition. Knocks the spots off the 2021 reissue. Superb clean 60’s monaural bliss.
- 2か月前に編集されましたMy copy has the stereo non-flipback sleeve containing the mono disc as per the photos shown here. I guess I should file it next to my stereo copy of Sgt Pepper with the "this is a mono recording " note 😁
Musically this album is a bit of a mixed bag. The good bits ('Heaven is on Your Mind', 'Dear Mr Fantasy', 'No Face, No Name, No Number') are fabulous; the not so good ('House for Everyone' ...) sound very dated nowadays.
Steve Winwood was firing on all cylinders with both his writing and performing on this one, and Chris Wood, Jim Capaldi and Dave Mason bring fine playing to the table too.
Definitely worth a listen if you like late 60s rock with a psychedelic edge! - 3か月前に編集されましたexcellent sounding pressing. deep bass, crisp high end, and zero surface noise from the pressing. its safe to assume that this is also an all-analog mastering process as it is the same exact stamped matrix from any other Italian pressing from 1972 and later. its quite possible that this is pressed using the same mothers from way back then, as well, as the only difference is the hand etched "ORL" that has been added in the matrix area to update the catalog number for this specific reissue. absolutely fantastic version!!!
just listened to the last track, "Giving To You", for the first time in quite a while. i never noticed the obvious similarities it has to the longer instrumental middle in "The Fountain Of Salmacis" by Genesis until just now. i guess we now know what Gabriel and Banks and Rutherford were listening to at The Charterhouse School when they were wee lads. HA!! - An excellent mix of coherent pop songs capturing the 1967 psych vibe well w/ great harmonies, sitar, whimsical fantasy lyrics & Winwood's superb voice & melody enabling the whole thing to flow beautifully.
Wonderful flower power psychedelia.
Note: this is the American version that features a reshuffled song listing as well as dropping two songs [Utterly Simple & Hope I Never Find Me There] while adding Paper Sun, Hole in My Shoe, Smiling Phases and We're A Fade, You Missed This (which is just the extended ending to Paper Sun). - I concur: I do not have the original mono (I do know the original UA stereo) to measure this Sundazed mono re-release against, but on its own terms, this is a great sounding record, punchy, with no obvious artifice or postmodern compensations in the mastering; several tracks have rather different mixes or performances than the stereo. A cool mono re-release, now itself somewhat "vintage"!
- The Monarch 1967 stereo pressing is top notch, very quiet, with a wide soundstage. Adding the UK EP singles (Paper Sun, Hole in My Shoe, and Smiling Phases) to this US version makes a very different listening experience from the UK version. 5 stars for sonics and song quality.
- Dave Mason plays guitar, bass, sitar, percussion and mellotron on this, but he ain't pictured nor credited for mysterious reasons.
- 11か月前に編集されましたThis pressing is on a yellow vinyl. But mine came on an orane vinyl. Nowhere is this mentioned to come as an orange pressing. Super rare?
- 1年前に編集されましたIf you peel the bottom edge of the back cover you will see the wrap around bottom front cover with mono HIGH FIDELITY HIIYM title and mono UAL catalogue number. So even though the back cover doesn't list a mono catalogue number like the Mr Fantasy cover does, UA did plan to press mono copies of Heaven but AFAIK no copies were ever pressed up
