Hollywood legends Burt Lancaster (Elmer Gantry) and Kirk Douglas (The Indian Fighter) star in this upbeat, action-packed comedy adventure. Set free after 30 years in prison, train robbers Harry Doyle (Lancaster) and Archie Long (Douglas) discover that they have a lot of catching up to do as they face the high-tech, new-wave, whirlwind lifestyle of the 1980s. And with crooked cop (Charles Durning, The Rosary Murders) and a myopic hit-man (Eli Wallach, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) hot on their trail, Harry and Archie find the straight life a little too tough to handle. That s when these two old pros start doing what they do best... making plans for their boldest, most explosive train heist ever. Jeff Kanew (Revenge of the Nerds) directed this final teaming of the two screen giants. The wonderful cast also includes Alexis Smith (Night and Day), Dana Carvey (Wayne s World), Darlanne Fluegel (Freeway) and Billy Barty (Foul Play).

So happy to find this movie available as a digital purchase since for what ever the reasons it has never been available for purchase outside of the VHS release many years ago, I would still love to be able to own the film on Blu ray.
I laughed out loud watching this movie just as I did many years ago when I originally seen it , that part in the nursing home where Burt Lancaster gets the residents riled up about the less than desirable sloop that is passed off as food made for human consumption is so funny. That line to this day makes he laugh "Food we want food real food not this strained sloop, steak potatoes, real food"
Do yourself a favor and check out this film you will be glad you did.

Kirk Douglas, although 70 when the film was made, plays a 67 year old ex-con along with his 73 year old partner in crime ex-con Burt Lancaster, who was actually 73 at the time of filming. The movie concerns two train robbers who were sent to prison for 30 years, and their struggles upon being released, one to an assisted living facility and a minimal social security, and the other to society as a what-ever-job-is-available-to-a-67-year-old-ex-con. They end up doing what they know best after realizing that society has forgotten them. There are hilarious incidents involving a hit-man intent on fulfilling his 30 year contract involving the two ex-cons. A young Dana Carvey plays a rather serious parole officer with none of Carvey's more famous "church lady" antics. All-in-all, very enjoyable, seeing these two together in a spoof at the end of their "tough guy" careers.

What's not to like about Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. They do a great job of being a couple of reformed jailbirds just wanting to enjoy the freedom of a life beyond bars after 20 years. The humor keeps the movie going, but there are real lessons beneath the laughs--they find a changed society that just doesn't want them to suceed and keeps throwing roadblocks in their way and treating them like children or senile elders. No wonder that by the end their willing to just throw in the towel and go for a last moment of glory. Highly recommend.

Archie Leach and Harry Doyle are released from prison after 30 years for robbing a train and have never seen the outside world and are shocked at all the changes. On top of that they have a near sighted hitman on their trail. It's dated now but this comedy from 1986 is worth watching just for Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. Even though they've both done a lot better they are a joy to watch as the two very old school bank robbers and Eli Wallach is also good as the near sighted hitman with a grudge trying to kill them. A very funny film.

After 30 years in prison for robbing a train in the 1950s, two gangsters (Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas) now find themselves elderly men in the new world of the 1980s where they don't fit in. Lancaster feels confined by the rules and over regulation of the retirement home he's been sent to and Douglas tries to recapture his youth by going out with a hot, young gym instructor (Darlanne Fluegel) to discos and rock clubs but her sexual energy drains him. Directed by Jeff Kanew (REVENGE OF THE NERDS), the film attempts to find humor in the cliched and stereotypical treatment of senior citizens, almost to the point of offensiveness. Still, it's wonderful to see Lancaster and Douglas in their last spurt of bravura, playing off their old screen personas, as both would shortly be severely affected by strokes in the following years. The highlight of the film is a hilarious Eli Wallach as an incompetent near sighted hit man. The movie has one of those tiresome 80s synthesizer/drum machine score scores but there is a lovely ballad over the main credits by Burt Bacharach and sung by Kenny Rogers. With Alexis Smith, Charles Durning, Dana Carvey and Billy Barty.

The British DVD (it's a title not available in the U.S.) is in the proper wide screen 2.35 ratio.
