Mount Vernon Seminary and College

The University Archives preserves and upholds the legacy of Mount Vernon Seminary and College, an all-women’s educational institution founded in 1875 that became part of the George Washington University in 1999. As the first school of higher education available to women in Washington, D.C, Mount Vernon Seminary and College has an important place in this city’s heritage, in higher education, and in American women’s history. From the personal papers of notable women, such as Marjorie Merriweather Post and Eleanor Lansing Dulles, to the records produced by students, faculty and staff over 124 years, the Mount Vernon Seminary and College Archives sustains the memories of its graduates and serves as an abundant resource for future scholars.

In addition to its collections of Mount Vernon Seminary and College official records and personal papers, the GW University Archives includes the following Mount Vernon publications, which are available for use in our reading room.

If you are a faculty or staff member or alumna of Mount Vernon, please contact the archives for information about how you can contribute to the archives.

Catalogs, 1877-1998

The catalogs include a brief history of the college, academic calendars, admission requirements, information about individual courses offered at the college, rules and regulations, and the names of important administrative offices. From 1934-1969, there were separate catalogs for the Seminary and Junior College.

The name of the yearbook changed several times during Mount Vernon's history. While the Junior College existed as a separate entity (1927-1968), there were separate yearbooks for it and the Seminary. All of the Mount Vernon yearbooks have been scanned and are available through the Internet Archive.
