La zona
Dirección
Barrio: Upper East Side

I really enjoyed the tour of this building. The organizers were kind enough to go ahead with the tour even though I was the only person on it, which made it an even more special experience for me. The guide was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed the historical context provided.
It's quite a small building so the tour only takes and hour or so and I think could be well combined with one of the larger museums of the upper east side or perhaps the cable car to Roosevelt Island.

A Hidden Historic Gem in NYC - Tucked away on a very busy street! What an incredible historic building with period furniture and decor. Built in 1799 and now a historic landmark. Two guided tours offered daily and reservations are made online. Our guide was fantastic and brought the history to life - worth a visit! We loved it!!!!

From the webpage … “The Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden presents the period of the Mount Vernon Hotel which operated from 1826 until 1833.

Constructed in 1799 as a carriage house for a 23-acre estate, and converted into the Mount Vernon Hotel in 1826, this stone building sits on land originally owned by Colonel William Stephens Smith, and his wife Abigail Adams Smith, daughter of John Adams.

This fashionable country resort was popular among New Yorkers who wished to escape the hustle and bustle of the city which at that time extended only as far north as 14th Street. The Hotel advertised itself as “free from the noise and dust of the public roads, and fitted up and intended for only the most genteel and respectable” clientele. In those days, one could take the stagecoach or steamboat up to 61st street and spend the day at the hotel sipping lemonade in the ladies parlor or playing cards in the gentlemen’s tavern.”

Not to be missed! I've been walking by for years and always intrigued with this lovely house on the hill. Being in the holiday spirit, I went yesterday, and couldn't be more pleased with the experience. I was welcomed by two lovely ladies, Meg and Carol, and felt like I was visiting family. Carol the volunteer, was knowledgeable and you can feel her passion when she takes you back to a wonderful time in N.Y. I learned so much and can't wait to share this great find! I think I'll go back in Spring. Cindy

This was the second time I visited the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and this time for the Christmas holidays.

The hotel was decked out with pumice, garlands and holly all over the house as it would have getting ready for the holidays during the Revolutionary War years and after. The hotel was not as elaborate as it might have been during Victorian times but still it was simple and well decorated with strings of cranberries and popcorn that might have decorated it during that time period.

Take time to tour the building. The docents are very nice and very knowledgeable about the building and it is an interesting tour. Snow had fallen in the walled garden and it gave it a nice Christmasy feeling.

There are some interesting events going on all year round.

What a disappointment. Although small, a visit to this hidden relic of old NY could have been a sweet introduction to times past. Instead, we were treated like unwelcome gate crashers. Don't take pictures. Don't go anywhere by yourselves. Stay in a group. Don't. Don't. I might add don't bother to enter here if you want to feel welcome.

There was a video introduction upstairs, played at such a low volume that it was impossible to understand. People asked the docent to increase the volume, but she was clearly unfamiliar with the DVD Player and could not do anything.

What a shame. This could be a small gem of the upper East side. But it is a Don't.

This is a real find. You’ll learn so much about early New York in a wonderfully curated museum and garden setting. Our guide Meg was simply outstanding. Not hard to find, and well worth making the time to go.

We thoroughly enjoyed our low-priced, 90-minute guided tour of this unique piece of New York history. Built as an upscale carriage house in 1799, it served as a "day hotel" for only 7 years (1826-1833) yet remarkably survived through other incarnations and remains intact, filled with period furniture and household necessities of the early 19th century. The 10-minute video and subsequent tour are crammed with surprises about the city and the way people lived. For real history buffs.

As a history lover, this historic hotel was on my list to see. I was the only guest at the time (except for some school groups on a different floor), and enjoyed a personal tour with the kind and knowledgeable volunteer. I spent about two hours soaking up the ambience. There are two furnished floors to view, along with an informative video. It really is incredible how the city grew up and swallowed this hotel, which used to be over four miles from the city, surrounded by countryside. Thank you to all who saved it.

Walked four blocks to this historic site hidden among the high rises. Experienced a wonderful 2.5 hour tour that explained that this was a country inn in 1825. Great imports from China. Take your time to experience the ambiance. Place has 200 year old ornaments. Wonderful vegetable and herbal garden behind the country inn.
