Steven Spielberg's Kids: Family of 7 Children With Wife Kate

If you’re currently reading this, then you know that Steven Spielberg has been a part of your life in one way or another through his work. But aside from his incredible films, the legendary director is also quite the family man — with seven incredible kids you have to get to know!

The man who introduced the world to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and completely captivated audiences with films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and more, has also made time to be an incredible father to his children.

Steven’s first child came with his now ex-wife, actress Amy Irving. After meeting on the set of Close Encounters in 1976, the pair dated for a while, split in 1979, then rekindled their romance again in 1984. One year later, they not only had their first baby, Max, but they also got married.

In 1989, the pair divorced — a split that cost about $100 million — but that didn’t stop Steven from marrying again. He tied the knot with actress Kate Capshaw in 1991 after meeting her on the set of Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom.

Kate already had one daughter, Jessica Capshaw, from a previous marriage to Robert Capshaw, as well as an adopted son, Theo. Together, she and the Oscar winner went on to welcome five kids together. In total, that’s seven kids that can say they’re part of the Spielberg/Capshaw clan. And Steven will always put them ahead of everything else.

“I will always drop everything and go meet those needs. That’s the priority,” he once revealed. “They always need mom and dad, and I am either there with my kids or my wife is, but they’re never without us.” It certainly sounds like this family has plenty of love, and that won’t be changing at all anytime soon.

It may come as a shock that the Hollywood filmmaker never envisioned himself having a family of his own. It was his work on the classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial that led him to realize he wanted to be a parent one day.

“No. I didn’t want to have kids because it was not a kind of equation that made sense for me as I went from movie to movie to movie, script to script … It never occurred to me till halfway through E.T.: I was a parent on that film,” he said in April 2022, per Variety. “I was literally feeling like I was very protective of Henry [Thomas] and Robert [MacNaughton] and my whole cast, and especially Drew [Barrymore], who was only 6 years old.”

Jessica Brooke Capshaw

Kate’s firstborn, Jessica, became Steven’s stepdaughter when he married her mother. Jessica is perhaps the most well-known in the family, as she’s an actress who has appeared in many TV shows and movies, most notably as Jamie Stringer in The Practice and as Dr. Arizona Robbins on the extremely popular ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Max Samuel Spielberg

Steven’s first son with ex-wife Amy, Max can be seen here on the far left next to his mom. Max has been relativity private compared to some of his siblings, and while he hasn’t exactly gone down the movie route, he’s found his place designing video games.

Max also made a surprise appearance in his dad’s movie Back to the Future. Though he was born just three weeks before the 1985 movie was released, Steven listed his son’s name as the director of the fictitious Jaws 19, a film that appears on a theater marquee in Back to the Future.

Theo Spielberg

Adopted by Kate before marrying Steven, Theo entered the Spielberg/Capshaw team when Steven adopted him as his own son after he married Kate. Theo is a guitarist, pianist, backup vocalist for the indie folk duo Wardell. The other half? His sister Sasha (more on her soon). Aside from music, Theo has also found himself working for Saturday Night Live and on his father’s film, Munich, behind the camera.

Sasha Spielberg

Steven and Kate’s second eldest daughter, Sasha, is an actress and a musician, as she serves as the other half of Wardell. Sasha has appeared in many of her father’s films, including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Munich, and most recently, The Post. She married her husband, Harry McNally, in May 2022.

Sawyer Avery Spielberg

Steven and Kate’s youngest son, Sawyer, was born in 1992, and he’s already started to leave some footprints in Hollywood. Sawyer previously had small parts in 2017’s The Post and 2012’s Afterglow, but he made his onscreen acting debut in 2020’s Honeydew.

Honeydew premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, but Sawyer’s role in the film made headlines when the trailer — which featured him playing the role of Sam in the horror movie – was released in January 2021.
