He became a household name with his brilliant portrayal of Denny Duquette in Grey's Anatomy. Still, years later, most people know him for his villainous role as Negan in The Walking Dead series or his infamous role as John Winchester in Supernatural.

Morgan's best and most timeless movie and TV appearances all showcase his phenomenal acting prowess and range.

Who He Plays: Morgan plays Clyde, a down-on-his-luck divorced man who happens to also be an absent father because of his college basketball coaching job. Yet despite spending little time with his two daughters, Clyde is quiet, compassionate, and a loving, committed father.

What It's About: The horror film follows a young girl who becomes strangely obsessed with an antique wooden box her father bought her at a yard sale. She grows increasingly unstable, and the change in her personality leads her recently divorced parents to believe the box holds a malevolent spirit that possesses and devours its host. Once aware of the spirit, Clyde does everything he can to help his daughter.

Why We Love It: The Possession has compelling characters, and horrifying but thrilling scenes. Morgan shows his versatility and acting range in the film, which was different from anything he'd done before, and his performance helps make it more than a run-of-the-mill horror story. The audience believes Clyde would go to the ends of the earth to save his possessed daughter.

  • Who He Plays: Morgan portrays detective Brian Heigh, a seasoned and dedicated law officer who is haunted by the unsolved cases he works on. Although there is not much room for character growth, Heigh is passionate in his relentless pursuit of justice.

What It's About: The movie is loosely based on a true story about hunting a serial killer. In a small Texas town, two detectives, inlcuding Heigh, are tasked with finding and catching a sadistic killer who is dumping the cadavers of young women in a marsh known as the killing fields. They race against the clock as they try to save a girl who has gone missing and is believed to be the next target.

Why We Love It: Flawless acting, impressive directing by Ami Canaan Mann, and phenomenal cinematography, not to mention the dark and gritty plot, make Texas Killing Fields a favorite among those who enjoy serial killer stories on a screen. Morgan's raw intensity effectively captures Heigh's inner turmoil and dedication to stopping the murders and catching the culprit.

  • The Walking Dead

Who He Plays: Morgan plays villain Negan, leader of the Saviors, a group of survivors in the Sanctuary. Despite being the leader of a survivor sect, Negan oppresses other survivor communities and tries to force them to pay tribute to him. He pretends to have a jovial and childlike personality. Still, beneath the surface, he is incredibly intelligent and has a knack for reading people and exploiting their weaknesses, often to his benefit.

What It's About: The Walking Dead is a zombie survival series based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman. A gritty drama that demonstrates what life is like months and years after a zombie apocalypse, it shows how humanity has faltered and what is being done to create a new world where survival is the priority. The series follows an ever-expanding cast of survivors who search for safety and security by moving from one place to the next and facing zombie hordes, villainous groups, and vicious adversaries.

Why We Love It: Although a survivalist series at its core, The Walking Dead teaches viewers far more than survival lessons. Every character has depth, and it's intriguing to see different sides of their moral complexities, especially with Negan. He's arguably one of the series' biggest villains, even though he appears only in Season 6 onward. He inspires a reign of terror with his off-putting come-ons, and is a master of jokes that land like threats, which is unsurprising considering his “showman” persona. Although he commits many atrocious acts, one that stands out is when he kills Glenn - a fan favorite of the series. Despite his villainy, he became so popular that he was given a spinoff series with Maggie.

Who He Plays: In this thriller with supernatural elements based on James Herbert’s 1983 novel Shrine, Morgan plays skeptical journalist Gerry Fenn, who investigates rumored supernatural occurrences in a small New England town. Gerry evolves as he becomes more curious, determined, empathetic, and protective while confronting his own belief system.

What It's About: When a young girl, Alice, believes she is conversing with the Virgin Mary through visions and has been granted gifts that allow her to heal the sick, disgraced journalist Fenn begins investigating. He unearths a sinister conspiracy, and strange events occur. As the supernatural phenomena become more dangerous, he tries to save Alice and himself.

Why We Love It: The Unholy is a successful merger of thriller and horror film that attempts to answer serious questions about belief and religion. Morgan shows his acting skills when he confronts the malevolent supernatural forces with courage, bravery, and determination. His portrayal adds emotional resonance to key moments, helping to make The Unholy a compelling supernatural thriller.

  • Who He Plays: In this romantic comedy, Morgan plays Patrick Sullivan, a firefighter who is also the protagonist's accidental love interest. Patrick is caring, loyal, sincere, resilient, and charming.

What It's About: The film  centers on the love life of radio host Emma, about to marry Richard, supposedly her perfect match. Unfortunately for Emma, she learns she is already married to charismatic but irresponsible fireman Patrick. Although unbelievable, it turns out to be true: Patrick arranged for them to be married as a vindictive joke to get back at Emma for breaking up his relationship with his ex-fiance. His nasty trick bites back, however, when he begins to fall in love with her.

Why We Love It: The film has many twists and turns that keep viewers engaged. Morgan is likable and memorable as Patrick, and his natural charm and charisma shine. He also brings emotional depth to Patrick's character, and has undeniable chemistry with his co-stars, balancing both heart and humor.

Who He Plays: Morgan plays John Winchester, the father of supernatural hunters Sam and Dean Winchester, who is seeking revenge after his wife is killed by a demon known to fans as Azazel. His revenge leads to him becoming a hunter, but he disappears early on in the series, with his sons left to piece together what he uncovered about their mother's death. Winchester is gritty and no-nonsense, valuing commitment, perseverance, family traditions, and rule-following - all traits he instills in his children.

What It's About: After John disappears on a supernatural hunting trip, his children step into his shoes. As the series progresses, they strive to not only uncover the truth about their mother's demise and catch her killer, but also to learn what happened to their father. The show focuses as well on the brothers hunting down evil supernatural monsters, creatures, demons, and even fallen gods to save innocent people.

Why We Love It: Supernatural is an action-packed series filled with adventure, monster hunting, brotherly camaraderie, and saving lives. It's undeniable that Sam and Dean love one another deeply and will do anything to save each other, even to their own detriment. Morgan's performance in the show has been critically acclaimed because he makes a lasting impression as a determined, headstrong father who raises two strong men who end up saving the world. Who He Plays: Morgan plays Joe Merriwether, a seasoned FBI agent with a no-nonsense attitude and a keen investigative mind. He's dedicated to his job, committed to solving crimes, and relentless in his pursuit of justice.

However, things get interesting when the duo learns the serial killer has psychic abilities, too.

Why We Love It: Merriwether exhibits determination, professionalism, and a sense of duty to protect the innocent. He's a skilled investigator willing to explore unorthodox avenues to solve the case, even if it means embracing concepts that challenge his rational worldview. Morgan's performance makes the character even more complex.

Who He Plays: Morgan plays Luke Vaughn, a thief and father with a sick daughter. Out of options, he uses his resourcefulness, street smarts, and knack for planning and executing robberies to plan a heist.

What It's About: Vaughan is a desperate man who will do anything for his daughter, even if that means teaming with a security guard to rob a ruthless gangster's casino. The attempt goes horribly wrong, so they hijack a city bus to escape the police and the casino owner's maniacal thug.

Why We Love It: The film is understated, but does the heist genre justice with its impressive production values, action scenes, and music score. These elements come together alongside Morgan's powerful performance to create a watchable, memorable thriller. Morgan does a bang-up job demonstrating the thieving skills of his character, and aptly portrays a father who will do anything to save his sick daughter. Vaughn also has the actor's signature charm and charisma, which he uses to navigate the criminal underworld.

Who He Plays: Morgan plays Jacob Kanon, a New York City detective who contends with the murder of his daughter. He's deeply focused, emotionally raw, and relentlessly determined.

What It's About: In this crime mystery thriller, Kanon investigates and pursues a serial killer responsible for the slaying of his daughter, which occurred when she was on her honeymoon in London. While investigating the harrowing event, he learns of others who have been targeted and works with a journalist to help him solve the most important case of his life.

Why We Love It: The Postcard Killings is compelling until the very end, with a gripping plot, stunning cinematography, and strong performances. Morgan effectively conveys Kanon's grief, determination, and vulnerability, drawing audiences into his relentless quest for justice.

Who He Plays: In the comic adaptation The Losers, Morgan plays special forces colonel Franklin Clay, who is charming, playful, and wholly committed to his team, a ragtag group of elite commandos. He also has an amazing sense of humor and comes across as wholesome despite being a fierce commander.

What It's About: The Losers is about a team of elite US special force commandos who are lethally betrayed by their handler, Max, while on a mission deep in the Bolivian jungle. Alone and presumed dead, the elite force led by Clay decides to hunt down their enemy and even the score. They meet a mysterious woman, Aisha, who gives them the chance to kill Max and right the wrongs committed against them.

Why We Love It: The Losers hasn't received great critical reception, but it's a solid film for fans who enjoy the star-studded cast, over-the-top action, witty dialogue, and entertaining revenge plot. Morgan stands out among a fellow cast including Zoe Saldaña, Chris Evans, and Idris Alba. The movie might not be groundbreaking, but Morgans's hilarious and charismatic performance as a laid-back commando leader helps make it a worthwhile watch.

Who He Plays: One of the best superhero movie adaptations of the late 2000s was Jack Snyder's Watchmen, and its success is partly due to Morgan's character The Comedian/Edward Blake, a cigar-smoking vigilante with numerous flaws.

What It's About: Set in an alternate 1985, the 2009 film is about superheroes, vigilantes, and villains embroiled in a plot to discredit all past and present superheroes. Vigilante Rorschach reconnects with his retired superhero associates after uncovering the deadly plot. While trying to get to the bottom of the far-reaching conspiracy, they learn of catastrophic consequences for the world's future and band together to stop it before it's too late.

Why We Love It: Watchmen is one of the best comic book-to-movie adaptations to watch because, unlike others of its kind, it provides a compelling story without a clear-cut protagonist or antagonist. The superheroes are eerily human for the genre, with the film doing a brilliant job demonstrating that even “superheroes” face moral and personal obstacles. Also, most of the superheroes, including The Comedian, don't have actual superpowers. Yet even without powers, Morgan brings The Comedian to life in ways viewers don't expect. He steals every scene he's in and makes a terrible character charismatic, a feat in and of itself.

Who He Plays: Morgan plays Max, a seemingly sweet, charming, and kind man who turns out to be a cunning, atrocious stalker.

What It's About: The film centers on Juliet, a surgeon who recently separated from her partner. She moves into a suspiciously cheap apartment in Brooklyn and begins dating Max. He doesn't appear to be a bad person, but Juliet is suspicious. Her suspicions are confirmed when she realizes something is not quite right about her apartment. After setting up a camera, she learns Max has been spying on her and built hidden access pathways into her home.

Why We Love It: The Resident is worth watching if you're in the mood for a creepy stalker film and a heroine who takes down the villain. Morgan is both charming and incredibly sinister in the film, and he steps into the mind of a truly sick individual to become the villain the movie needs.

    The Salvation

Who He Plays: Morgan plays Henry Delarue, a former Union Army colonel and Native American fighter who has lost his way and becomes a corrupt land pirate and homicidal gang leader. Not only is Delarue greedy and ruthless, but he also has a thirst for power and uses his cunning intelligence to get whatever he needs.

What It's About: Set in the 1870s in America, the film follows Jon, a Danish immigrant settler who hunts down and kills the murderer who took the lives of his family. His revenge killing sets off a chain of events involving Delarue, who begins to furiously hunt John because one of the men he killed was Delarue's brother. Even though he has little help from his community, and faces betrayals and cowardice at every turn, John becomes a vengeful hunter who slays outlaws and cleanses the town of Delarue and his cronies.

Why We Love It: The Salvation is a must-watch for Western film fans who enjoy revenge storylines, beautiful cinematography, and gritty lead characters. Morgan does a particularly good job of playing the villain in this film, with his twisted and ruthless portrayal of a man seeking justice for his brother's death. Viewers watch him become wholly corrupted - merciless with no regard for human life or mortality.

Who He Plays: In his first big-screen movie role, Morgan portrays William, a small-town singer who helps the film's protagonist get over her deceased husband.

What It's About: This heartbreaking yet simultaneously heartwarming romance film is about a grieving widow, Holly, whose dead husband, Gerry, leaves her a series of inspiring letters to be delivered periodically.

Why We Love It: P.S. I Love You isn't groundbreaking, but the rom-com has stayed in the hearts of fans. Not only does it brilliantly show that true love never dies, but it also features some of the best actors and actresses, like Hilary Swank and Morgan. Morgan doesn't play a main character, but his charm helps lighten the movie's tone even with his minimal screen time.

    Grey's Anatomy
    Photo: ABC

Who He Plays: Morgan got his big break in Hollywood when he was cast as Denny Duquette in Grey's Anatomy, a heart patient and the love interest and fiance of much-loved surgical intern Izzie Stevens. Duquette is charming, funny, and memorable, which is impressive considering Grey's Anatomy is still an ongoing series. Unfortunately, audiences don't get to see too much of Duquette because he suffers a blood clot and dies alone from a stroke, just as things are beginning to look up for his character.

What It's About: The medical and romantic drama is centered on Meridith Grey, an aspiring surgeon and daughter of Dr. Ellis, one of the best surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital, where much of the series occurs. The series focuses on the love lives of the surgical interns and their mentors, who later become residents. It also tells medical stories while showing the critical situations doctors face daily.

Why We Love It: Grey's Anatomy is a must-watch because not only does the series accurately represent mental illness while bringing awareness to tough issues like school shootings, sexual assault, police brutality, and problems with the healthcare system, but it also has relatable characters like Denny. Even though he appears on the show only for a few episodes, Morgan brings Duquette's character to life with his charm and the effortless chemistry between him and Heigl. His performance had fans rooting for the pair's romance and left them emotionally shattered when he perishes following complications from his controversial heart transplant. His reappearance in the fifth season as a ghost only Izzy can see is even more profound because he conveys his disappointment in the love they lost.

    Desierto

Who He Plays: Morgan plays bad guys a little too well, and he is at his bad-guy best in Desierto as Sam, an unflinching, ruthless, and deranged killer who's also  a gun-wielding vigilante intent on killing for what he believes to be right.

What It's About: Migrant Moises and 13 others are trying to cross the US-Mexican border in search of a better life. When their truck breaks down, they set off on foot, but the inconvenience quickly turns into a horrific situation when they are hunted by immigrant-hating serial killer and psychotic sniper Sam, who happens to be a villainous US border control officer.

Why We Love It: Desierto shines a light on the ugliness of the real-life US-Mexico border situation, and invites viewers to think about how some people are innately evil. Morgan does an incredible job portraying the deranged and racist US border controller Sam. His performance is not only exemplary but also frightfully realistic, and his actions will have your stomach churning and hands shaking throughout.
