The Rambla is probably the best known thing to do in Montevideo; when I talked to a friend who'd visited the city in the past, he claimed it was the only thing he enjoyed about it. We found other things to also spend time on during our visit, but we did set aside a couple hours for a leisurely stroll along the Ramblas. We started our walk after taking some photos at the Montevideo sign, near Playa Pocitos, and then walked south from there. It was nice sunny weather and a good opportunity to stretch our legs, see the river and the city, and watch lots of people who were out enjoying the day.

I really enjoyed my visit here, but I don't know whether it would be for everyone. As a teenager I'd read a book (Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors) and it made enough of an impression on me that I still remember a lot of it. Although the plane crash at the heart of the story took place in the Andes, most of the people on it were rugby players (and their friends and family) from the Uruguay national team.

Although I already knew the overview of what happened from the book, I thought the museum could have been organized better. It had a great wealth of detail, artifacts, first-person quotes, and other information about the crash, but someone who didn't already know the overall story would probably feel pretty lost. It was definitely worth going, but I'd recommend getting context from the book (or I believe there was also a movie) in advance.

There are timed tickets that can be purchased in advance, but we weren't sure about our timing so just stopped by and didn't have any issue getting in. There was no overall tour, although the basement had a movie playing which may have given more of an overview (but was in Spanish, which I don't speak well enough to be able to really watch). There are restrooms, but they are small and not very nice.

Even though this place was a little touristy, it was a good spot to go for lunch. There are lots of restaurants and souvenir shops and there are people outside the restaurants advertising tables to you. Locals told us this is not a great place to be after dark.

Several days after Carnival ended, Carnival performers put on a closed-door performance for our cruise line Azamara (Amazing Evening). This theater is special and the performance was very memorable. The performers and venue were excellent! Bravo.

We stayed in a hotel in the heart of the old city, which made for a wonderful opportunity to stroll the area at various times of day. There are multiple parks and pedestrian only areas, which made walking nice, although there did appear to be road access to most locations, so you did have to look for cars.

This part of the city is very pretty, with a good number of old buildings and small churches, and we felt quite safe walking to and from the port, even with luggage (we departed via the ferry).

This building is the meeting place for the Uruguayan legislators and is well worth a visit. It's a little far from the historic old town for a walk, but we were able to get there fairly easily with Uber. The building is both historic and beautiful - the exterior is imposing, and the interior is full of marble, paintings, columns, and other architectural details.

We visited for the English language tour (3:00 when we were there) - didn't need an advance reservation, just showed up and paid (I believe they wanted cash only) and joined the tour. The guide spoke English well, was proud of her country, and was able to tell us a lot about the building as well as the history and government of Uruguay. It lasted right about an hour and was well worth doing.

We enjoyed our own walk through the old city of Montevideo and stopped at the Cathedral, which is on Plaza de la Constitucion. The square isn't large, so it's hard to get a great view of the cathedral facade without standing right underneath it and craning your neck upward.

We thought the interior of the cathedral was beautiful and worth stepping into. Entrance is free, and we spent about 15 minutes enjoying it, including the main nave and the chapels along the walls.

We went to a concert by the Sodre juvenile symphony orchestra (mostly teenagers) conducted by Giselle Ben-Dor. They performed several works by Dvorak and Aaron Copland and did a pretty good job of it. The auditorium, which has several levels, has good acoustics, and despite being in a side aisle (on level A) I could see everything. A nice venue.

The tour was lovely and very informative. Very easy to organize via WhatsApp. They have guides in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The wine tasting came with cheese, meat and bread and was very affordable for the wineries in the area.
