"We were brought here against our will" comes the statement from Myrlie Evers (widow of civil rights activist Medgar Evers) in this first episode, setting out the basis by which the fight for freedom began and the foundation for a range of topics spanning over a vast amount of time tackled by this incredible series, not least of all, the language of the forlorn, known as 'The Blues'.

The intoxicating essence of New Orleans permeates this episode as the story moves past the Civil War and through Storyville, covering the era where Civil Rights became law and Martin Luther King was assassinated.

This culminating episode brings viewers to the last 60 years in America as the shape-shifter that is racism reframes oppression and inequality in the guise of a 'new world', where in 2015 there is a black American president, yet police are literally killing young black men in the streets, with little to no recourse, bringing with it uprising, and riots.
