This is a wonderful and very complete compilation of Free's hits and other well known songs. The range of songs performed by Paul Rodgers proves that he has one of the best voices in rock. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the original versions of songs I thought I knew well, were slightly different to the later versions I have on other compilations. There were also a few songs I was not familiar with, which I enjoyed adding to my Free collection. This music sounds great even today and truly stands the test of time. I bought this CD secondhand and was very pleased to find it was in as-new condition.

I grew up a huge fan of the band Cream & listening to this album I'm reminded of the blues influenced songs of that band. This was one of the elite English blues bands of the 60's. Paul Rodger's has the classic blues-rock voice & the guitar playing of Paul Kosoff makes me wonder what he might have become had he not died early of an overdose. For anyone who is a fan of Cream, Bad Company (Rodger's & Kirk's follow up band) or just the blues in general should really like this double best of album. I definately recommend at least checking out this band's catalogue.

You heard all the songs before if you are looking at this CD set. You want to know if the remastering is good - yes it is. All right now moves the air from the sub and Time Away cymbals just hang in the air. If you think you might need this, just get it, great sound and all Free favourites are here.

I love Bad Co. and Paul Rodgers other work, but didn't know much about Free. This great blues!!! I'm surprised Free wasn't bigger that it was. Amazing stuff. A must have if you like Paul Rodgers or Bad Co. Either that or get all the albums. Some of the best blues I've heard.
Really amazed this is out of print in the US. Still available new on Island in Europe.

I wanted to love this anthology, but wasn't that enthralled. I have always been a huge Paul Rogers fan from his Bad Company days, but I wasn't that familiar with Free other than the heavily played "All Right Now" (which in my opinion could easily fit on any Bad Co. LP) I was expecting more songs in the same hard rock vein as "All Right Now", but realized after listening to this collection that Free was much more of a blues band. No disrespect to Free, who were great. I just had other expectations.

I first picked up a copy of this set when I wanted some Free on compact disk. I have worn out copies of all their albums on vinyl. This 2 cd anthology betters the old "Free Story" compilation by almost doubling the amount of material. The set covers the years 1968-72. Free was perhaps one the most underappreciated bands of this time period. It may be as result of the commercial success enjoyed by Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke's later band Bad Company. The band was formed in 1968 by ex-Black Cat Bones members guitarist Paul Kossoff and drummer Simon Kirke along with vocalist Paul Rodgers and ex-John Mayall band bassist Andy Fraser. The band's material consisted of blues based numbers, rockers and moody acoustic oriented pieces. Although known primarily for the singles "All Right Now" and "Wishing Well" (both included here) the band composed a wealth of fine material. This band was driven by its rhythm section which was one the best of its time. Andy Fraser's bass playing is highlighted on the live version of "Mr. Big" while Simon Kirke's drumming chops are evident on "Fire And Water". Paul Kossoff's influential wailing guitar can be heard on cuts like "The Stealer", "I'll Be Creepin'" and "Catch A Train". Paul Rodgers bluesy vocals wring emotion out of songs like "Broad Daylight", "Be My Friend", "Heavy Load" "Oh I Wept" and "Sail On". It is no wonder the band was asked to play at such high profile gigs as Hyde Park opening for Blind Faith and the Isle of Wight. Other highlights include the catchy "Little Bit Of Love", "Walk In My Shadow" and "Songs Of Yesterday" among many others. Eventually Andy Fraser exited to be replaced by Tetsu Yamauchi later of the Faces. John "Rabbit" Bundrick augmented the band on keyboards and Paul Kossoff's drug habit caused him to be replaced by Wendell Richardson during the "Heartbreaker" sessions. The only quibble I have with this set is that neither disk is even 70 minutes long. A few more of my favorites like "Get Where I Belong", "Trouble On Double Time" and "Goodbye" could have been added. There was also enough room to add a few hidden gems like the non-lp single b-sides "The Worm", "Only My Soul" and "Let Me Show You". These non-lp sides appear on the excellent new "Songs Of Yesterday" import box set of Free rarities. However, this 2 cd set is probably the most representative and affordable compilation of Free's material which will be released. Fans of classic British blues based rock should pick this up immediately!

What a sick anthology! It's like the music gods just showered me with the ultimate gift of rhythm & blues with crunchy guitars ripping my ears off. 30 tracks? Nothing short of awesome. These guys make me want to party, drink and dance all night. If you're a fan of Free, more than likely your favorite song is here. Don't even hesitate. This is the best of all the so called "Greatest Hits" albums.

Superb selections from an unbeatable band

I saw Free live and have always loved their music, although the only album I currently had was The Free Story, which is an excellent compilation but does not include the 2 greatest tracks from Heartbreaker, Wishing Well and the title track.
Lately I wanted to explore their music again and bought this rather amazing selection. A fairly true chronology, which suits this superb band. There is a clear development and as many have said - what would Koss have produced if he had lived longer. Witness the live Mr Big, where he joins Andy Fraser's bass and quietly pushes the music in his trademark deep and supremely lyrical way. The live Fire and Water lifts off in the same way. So - these 2 live tracks with 1 other live one kicking off disc 2, followed by Koss and the rather underated Back Street Crawler Side 1 has 16 tracks from 4 albums and back over on side 2 after the live tracks and My Broother Jake - 4 tracks each from Free At Last and Heartbreaker and for me this shows Free as the major unbeatable band they were. Paul Rodgers' vocals, often cited as the best in rock music, Simon Kirke's solid drums and the telepathic duo of Andy Fraser's bass and Paul Kossoff's incnredible guiitar singing, howling and bringing the skin up in goose bumps.
For me this is real music of the soul and although Bad Company had their moments it's back to Free to reach the parts etc.....Brilliant and timeless and utterly distinctive and in a class of their own. Very sad to hear of Andy Fraser's passing this year and happily surprised to hear it on BBC Radio 4 news. Is the editor a fan I wonder?
Anything missing? I wouldl have like Mourning Sad Morning but it is a superb selection and may just possible lead me back again to the albums.

This Double CD Album Molten Gold - The Anthology a collection by FREE is perhaps their Best. They had that distinctive sound a sort of Blues / Rock style, anyway there are 8 selected albums on this CD they are ... Tons of Sobs, Free, Fire & Water, Highway, Free Live, Back Street Crawler, Free At Last, and Heartbreaker, that's 30 Tracks on the CDs,but my favourite track has always been All Right Now,it's a real Classic. Fortunately I happen to see this group live at the Reading Top Rank back in the early 70s, and they were absolutely Brilliant ! .
Anyway It's about time they re-digitalized this Album!,and this is a Great Double CD to have in your collection.

Five Stars for the Music, Two Stars for the Packaging
Reviewed in Canada on June 23, 2017
Five stars for the music . . . this is a great representation of Free's best music from 1968 - 1972 on two CDs, including (of course) the long version of "All Right Now"; Free's great single from the summer of 1970. Also included are three tracks from 1971's "Free Live!". And all the tracks except one from the excellent 1970 album "Fire and Water" are included, four as studios versions and two as live versions (the latter being "Fire and Water" and "Mr. Big", both recorded live at Croydon). As a bonus, there are two tracks from Paul Kossoff's 1973 "Back Street Crawler" album ("Time Away" and "Molten Gold"). Free always seemed to me to be an underrated Blues Rock outfit, but thankfully we can enjoy their best music on this 1993 compilation on A&M records. One caveat . . . I purchased my version used (due to the exorbitant price for a new version) from "usedsalesca" and it was advertised as "Used - Very Good". I agree that the CDs themselves (the important part) matched this description, however the two-CD jewel case and the cardboard cover are very well worn. Nonetheless the product arrived ahead of schedule and I have since purchased other CDs from "usedsalesca", so overall you could conclude that the used product was good value for the price paid.
