Mogambo

Mogambo ★★★

Whoever decided to cast Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner in the same movie was definitely looking to give some people a heart attack! Also, those tribe people knew what they were doing when they came with those “traditions” of throwing those things to Gable.

But seriously, this was another good safari romp starring probably bigger names than in previously reviewed King Solomon’s Mine, with Gable taking over the wry and sarcastic adventure man and Gardner as the whinny high class woman who has a hard time dealing with the setting and Gable. The banter between the two was really great, which made most of the movie enjoyable. The whole romantic subplot was fine, but I could have done it without it, as it ultimately proves to be somewhat inconsequential. The music was also really good, apparently all recorded in the Congo with actual tribes, it helped really well immerse me more in this world. The humor is also pretty solid and Ford does a nice job bringing a good sense of adventure, even though it leans more into the drama.

All in all, it was a nice little time with a funny Gardner and a wry and sarcastic yet charming Gable bantering and trying not to fall in love and get eaten by wild animals.
