Taj Mahal Meets the Culture Musical Club of Zanzibar

To record his new CD, 'Mktutano' (Swahili for 'meeting'), Taj Mahal travelled to Zanzibar to record with the 'Culture Music Club'. In a ramshackle abode in the capital Stone Town, hounded by electricity cuts and tropical showers, Taj recorded with this most African of Arabic orchestras. On two tracks he was even joined by Bi Kidude, the 90-something singer/percussionist who shocked and delighted her fans when she returned from Egypt in the 1940s as a smoking, drinking, shaven-headed singer who liked nothing more than flirting and dancing with her public.
