4-28-24 Sunday Worship | Join us as we worship our Lord and Savior. | By St. Andrew Presbyterian Church | Good morning and welcome to worship. Good morning. So glad to have you here. Thank you Dave for that beautiful gathering music. Welcome to those of you who are online. We are glad to have you with us today and those of you that are here in person, thanks for showing up. We are excited to be together today. Um several things you need to note. Let me just point out to you. If you'll open your bulletins to the middle, and you'll see that there's a hymn during the presentation of the offering. It's right at the end of the service. We moved it. Guess what? It also means we get to using another special hymn. So, just trust the slides. We do know what we're doing. It's going to appear out of order. We have a plan man. You can relax and it'll be projected on the walls so that you can sing along. There are friendship paths which I'm sorry Lynn. Okay, it's number 391, but that's like way later in the service. We'll tell you later. Um so, if there are blue friendship pads, if you would take those and fill those out especially if it is your first time with us or if your contact information has changed, we would love to know that information for the office so that we can find you when we have information you might want to know. The Animate Faith Bible Study Series continues on Tuesday evenings at six thirty. It is an amazing study. We're having a lot of fun. I am interested in introducing you to our guest teacher for this week. You will find her quite interesting and unlike any other pastor you probably seen. Um there is childcare available and if you need that, let us know and we will make sure to have that provided for you. There's also a Sunday morning adult Bible study. It will be meeting in the chapel immediately following worship and today, it is the gospel of Luke's post-resurrection stories. Interesting conversations. We'll hope you'll join us for that. There is this week? Drum roll please. Are you ready? You get to start registering for Vacation Bible School. Campfirelight registration opens on May 1st. It will be June 10th to the 14th from nine to noon and the cost is $10 per child and we really look forward to having as many kids as we can fit into the program. That makes the VBS team a little nervous but we are getting ready. Um the youth group today is going to go see the movie Unsung Hero at one thirty. Trisha Buckland is the person to see for that. Um and hope that our youth will enjoy that time today at our local movie theater. There is a concert here next Saturday at two o'clock and seven o'clock, the Spring Fling Pops Concert and we hope that you will come and enjoy that. I know one particular musician who's been working hard on it and I'm sure that there are some others that have also been putting a lot of time into some of this music. I would like to invite Greg, come on forward please. We'll give you the red microphone He even has visual aids Good morning introducing a new a new sign for the parking lot. Um there's a limited number of places where we can have handicap parking and we also have some people who don't have placards but might find a temporary need for a parking place closer to the front of the church or the say the ministry center. And so one of the members of the property team saw someone who had parked way way out in the south parking lot and they struggled to get to the door. They could have used a closer parking place. So they came up with the idea that our property team meeting that maybe we should have some reserved places. So, these are going to be in the parking lots closer to the church and if if you're someone who is let's say you broke your foot and you're walking around in one of those space boot things and it's a little hard to walk. Well, this is reserved for you And if you're someone who is using a cane but you don't have a handicap placard, well, this is for you So, if you see the reserve sign in a parking place and there's only going to be a few of em to start with and If you need one, there's a parking place waiting for you and hopefully hopefully we don't have 100 people that need them all. We only have a few of them. But these will start next week and we'll have a notice in the spirit about it. And you can pass the word around. If if you see the reserve spot it doesn't mean there's somebody special coming or something like that. This this is for the people that could use a little bit of extra help to get closer to the front door before they come to church. So. Thank you. Property team. Wonderful. I'd like to invite Dave Black to come forward Where is Dave? Thank you. Thank you. Good morning. I'm here to give you some updates on another Hubbard's cover. As most of you know, it's been a busy place and the demand for services that people that need our help keeps going up. So, we have two main issues. One is to get some fundraising and some grants And see if we I can't hear you. Oh, I'm sorry. Hold it. Wait. Oh, okay. Okay. Sorry. We have two main issues We have a need for fundraising grants to help provide for the people that need it and part of the the second part of that is that we're starting a new computer system so that will help us. Number one, qualify for the requirements from those that make the grants as far as record keeping and keeping track of who we serve and and hopefully it'll make life easier for those that are using their computers. So, thank you so much for your support and your continuing support of Mother Hubbard's. It means a lot to so many people. Thank you. Thank you. And finally, we have a video for you. Something to show you from the international tasting event. So, watch the screens and see what happened here recently. Thank you to the mission team and to everyone who made that possible. It was a lot of fun and whoever photographed it obviously likes the ribs. Let's prepare our hearts and our minds for worship. Let us pray. Oh gracious god, take our lives and let them be consecrated to you. Take these moments and this day, and let all that we do flow in praise to you. For we ask it in the name of Jesus Christ, and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Let all god's people say, amen. Amen. Please join and stand us in singing. Please be seated unless you've got a joy to share and then come on up and join us. Lots of joys today. Um I'm celebrating that my sister had a good health procedure or procedure done and everything went well. So, we're step closer to getting her a heart valve and and for great friends. I wasn't here last Sunday because I was helping my son celebrate his birthday a few days late and I was able to attend the banquet where his daughter was crowned a rodeo queen. And the are celebrating that our dear friend Lois Schneider from Fargo, North Dakota is here visiting us and she's just loving this California weather and fresh strawberries and all this neat things that we have to offer on here so. I'm celebrating a trip to Ojai for our grandson's wedding, Riley Vichner last Saturday and it was a wonderful event and then on the way home, we went through San Luis, Obisco area and saw Jeannie Bewman who was a former member here and she's doing fine in her assisted living place. No, I would take this back, can I? Oh, sure. I'm I want to thank the Kurt and Avor for working with me. We've been looking after a World War two veteran for the last 3 years. Their friend, he's they're friends of of ours and his wife died during COVID and he lives in Turlock and he died last week and his funeral is Tuesday. So, they're so kind to take us down and and Avor has we've arranged for his we've tried to do the best we could the last three years to make his life good and he died at age ninety-six 97. Yeah. Yup. So. So, we're a good team. Because. But we're not looking for business. Well, Marsh, this has been a real fast year, hasn't it? Yes. As most of you know, we are twins. She's the big one. I'm the old one. But tomorrow we will be celebrating our 79th birthday. And I just want to say how thankful we have been to share life with this miracle woman. Happy birthday. We are celebrating, we think, that yesterday, our brother-in-law was elected as the bishop for the Lutheran Churches of Alaska. Um I just wanted to make an announcement that the Yuba Sutter Youth Symphony has a concert here also this coming Monday night starting at seven. Please come if you can. This last week, my youngest son turned 60 years old. I'm specially proud of him because he lost his wife in two thousand fourteen to pancreatic cancer and he's been both father and mother to my grandchildren. My two granddaughters are in college and he takes care of the down syndrome child by the grandson and so I'm very proud of him. I'm I'm celebrating my son Stewart's 39th birthday last week and a week getting to spend down in the desert with my mom and my sister and very glad to come home, get out of the wind, and come into some rain. So, that little one that Pastor Tiffany is holding, she's 17 months today. Uh we're celebrating two April birthdays. Our oldest granddaughter Camille turned 8 on tax day and Barnett had a birthday last Friday. We are celebrating our parents' birthday. We are celebrating that our dad just got back from Cape Cod. We're celebrating that our grandma got back from her trip. And I'm celebrating a new back fence. It might not seem like a big deal but it's something that Don and I had been wanting to do for many many years and the old fence was going down and so my brother from Granite Bay Jack came up and helped me on Monday and then Mike Serenger and Jack helped get the new fence up on Tuesday. So, I have a new back fence. Yay. Yay. Really glad about that. Yesterday was my birthday party. And I'm celebrating a dear friend who's present, who's 90 years old, and who's the joy of my life. Her name is Carol Keesling and she's sitting right over there. And she sings in the choir. So, say hello to her today. My turn. I'm sorry. There are none online. However, I am celebrating. Thanks for all the prayers. My brother had a successful surgery. at home and healing nicely although I think the nerve blocks wereed off and it wasn't quite as good about the third day. So, but he's doing well. Thank you. Good. Becky, are there any on Facebook? Yes. The Elliots are celebrating their grandson, Henry's second birthday yesterday. Please join me in prayer. Lord Jesus, we lead such busy lives dictated by the calendar and the clock. Lives that all too often keep us oblivious to your gentle movements and your quiet voice. In our busyness, sometimes we can miss your presence. You guiding us in the direction other than where we think we need to be going. You don't scream or shout but instead often you come as a light breeze or a gentle hand. Like these joys that we've experienced here today. Whether be trips or people visiting, birthdays, other joys. Help us dear Lord to fill your nearness in those joys. Even the smallest. Help us to be aware of your presence. Give us the ability to come, to recognize these those joys as gifts from you. And help us to hear the most important words of that you whisper to us. That we are yours. And we are loved. Yes. In your holy name, we pray this, amen. Like to invite you to be seated and children to come forward and join me up here please. And I need you to sit here facing me. Mister Phil, you can sit right up here on the step next to me. Can everybody see? Okay, good morning. Good morning. So, I brought the box today and I put something in it and I had a little bit of help. So, anybody want to take a guess at what's in there? What do you want to guess, mister Phil? It's an elephant. It's kind of. No, it's not a real elephant. It's kind of heavy but not that heavy. Any other guesses? Okay. It's not a pizza either. Just in case you were wondering. So, what do you think? A cross. A cross. That would be a really good thing for me to put in there, wouldn't it? But nope, I brought something that is going to help you grow. Yeah. How'd you guess? Here we go. Okay, let's see. Are you growing yet? Anybody want to grow some? Mister Phil going to grow? No. Hm. Okay. I know what else. What else do we need to help us grow? Sun. Yup. Well, we kind of have some of the shades open but not enough to really grow in here. What else do you need to grow? How about some really good potting soil? Would anybody like some? Have I sprinkled it around your toes? Do you think you'd grow big and strong? Are you sure? Because this is what we need to grow, right? We need potting soil and we need water and we need sun. It's for plants Well, that's what Jesus was talking about today. We're being like plants but what is it that we really need to grow? Water. Water, not this kind of water, right? Okay. What else do we need to grow? What do we need to grow our hearts? Love? What do we need to grow our brains? School, Watui, that's a kind of a mom kind of answer. What do we need to grow our hands that they will help others So, if I didn't quite know how to do something and if I reached out to mister Phil and I said, hey, can you help me? And if he was really good at something and I wasn't so good at something, do you think he would help me? Yeah. And then what if Eliana needed some help? To grow in something. And she asked me, could that make us all stronger and helpful? And what if we all reached out together? Would it help us grow stronger? We need each other. This is what the adults are going to talk about during church today. Should I not sprinkle potting soil on their toes? Okay, we'll work on this kind of growing stronger together, okay? Okay, let's pray. Dear god, thank you that you are the vine tender. Thank you that Jesus is the vine and thank you that we can grow together in Jesus Christ. So, help our minds and our hearts and our hands that we might grow beautiful for you. We ask it in Jesus name and let all god's people say, amen. Amen. Thank you very much. Pastor Tiffany, would you like to be? Yes, missus Becky. Thank you. We are going to have Piper grooves, take the box. Here you go and did Jesus come back today? Oh yes, Jesus is right. Who needs, who needs to have Jesus at their house this week? Your sister hasn't had Jesus yet? Okay, that's where Jesus is going to go. You can take him. He's right there in the missus Becky, thank you for coming up. I will see you later. Be at peace. The peace of our lord Jesus Christ be with you always. Share it with each other. Good morning, church. Good morning, Dave. Put your hands together with me this morning. As we prepare to sing, proclaim your glory Do you want to try it two sides? Sure. Okay. So, here we go. This is what we've been waiting aiming for. We're going to sing, listen to the word that god has spoken. We're going to sing it through all once together and then I need Sally. We start this side. Okay. And then this side of the church, we start singing the verse. When we get to the end of line one. listen to the word that god has spoken. Amen. Can you guys start and do that side? And we'll do it that way twice. Okay. Can we try it? Absolutely. Yeah. Listen to the word that god has spoken listen to the one who's close at hand listen to the voice that began creation listen even if you don't understand listen to the word can listen to the word creation listen to the voice of the ten to the ones that was Judges? This reading is from the book of Acts chapter eight. Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a wilderness road. So Philip got up and went. Now there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of the Candace, the Queen of Ethiopians, in charge of her entire treasury. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning home. Seated his chariot, he was reading the prophet Isaiah. Then the spirit said to Philip, go over to that chariot and join it. So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, do you understand what you're reading? The Ethiopian replied, how can I unless someone guides me? And he invited Philip to get in and sit behind beside him. Now the of the scripture that the Ethiopian was reading was this, like a sheep, he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb silent before his shearer, so he does not open his mouth. In his humiliation, justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, about whom may I ask you, does the prophet say this? About himself or about someone else And then Philip began to speak and starting with the scripture, he proclaimed to the Ethiopian the good news about Jesus. As they were going along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, look, here is water. What is to prevent me from being baptized? He commanded the chariot to stop and both of them, Phillip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. When they came out of the water, the spirit of the lord snatched Phillip away. The eunuch saw him no more and went on the way rejoicing. But Philip found himself at Estes. Yeah. And he was passing through the region. He proclaimed the good news to all the towns until he came to Casaria. This is the word of the Lord. And the second reading is from the Gospel of John fifteen Chapter fifteen. Jesus said, I am the true vine. My father is the vine grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit, god prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me, you can do nothing. Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers. Such branches are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish and it will be done for you. My fathers glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. The word of the god, word of god, word of life. Let's pray. Gracious and almighty god, may the words of my mouth and the meditations of all of our hearts and our minds this day be acceptable and pleasing in your sight. For you are a rock, you are redeemer, and you are our vine, and we give you thanks. Amen. This is the season of Easter as you know, still have the same banners up. Still doing the same sort of bulletin and liturgy. And in this season of Easter we could expect to hear stories about what happened after the resurrection. Does anybody think that would make sense? Yeah. Mm hmm. It would make sense but instead the lectionary for your bee gives us portions of John's gospel that happen before the resurrection. Does that make sense? We didn't write the lectionary but we live by it. Today's gospel reading is a part of what is called the farewell discourse in the gospel of John. Four chapters of Jesus talking to the disciples before the arrest and trials and crucifixion. Now, I have to believe that Jesus knew in some form what was coming? And he was trying to give the disciples some clues and we know that they did not understand. Until after Easter and then all of a sudden they went, oh, now we get it and in this time that Jesus is talking, he's trying to give them teachings and sayings and things that they can easily remember. And my father is the vine grower. And Jesus said, I am the vine. You are the branches. So let's take that first part first. Jesus said grower. And Jesus said, I am the vine. You are the branch is. So, let's take that first part first. Jesus said, I am the true vine and my father is the vine grower. Now, last week, I asked you about your favorite names for Jesus. This could be another one. Jesus is our true vine And if Jesus is the vine, then god is the vine grower and that means that god is the one who creates life and who gives us life to everyone and god is the one who tends the life within us and nurtures us and it's who takes the plant and puts it in good soil with good irrigation and positions it for just the right amount of sun. And Jesus in this analogy is the vine that god is tending. It is Jesus, the vine, who has the roots. It's Jesus, the vine who grows beyond the stock. Jesus is the life. Vine and vine grower. Each need the other. God without Jesus is god without a purpose. And Jesus without god is destined to wither and of who Jesus is in relation to God. He's not just the best friend sitting at the table with the disciples. Jesus's second I ams god. He's not just the best friend sitting at the table with the disciples. Jesus's second I am statement for today is this. Jesus said I am the vine and you are the branches. If that first statement is about Jesus and god, then this one is about who we are in relation to Jesus and this is the only one of John's I am statements that include a U R. Jesus said, I am the vine and because I love you and because I want to be connected to you, you are my branches you are the ones who reach out into the world and you are the ones who bear fruit and you are the ones that share love and grace. I'll anchor you down with roots. I'll nourish you and we'll work together because I am and you are related to me. Jesus didn't say all those words. I made some of them up but it's what Jesus meant. Jesus wanted to remind the disciples to remind all of us of who we are and how we are connected to Jesus I want you to notice what Jesus did not say. Jesus did not say, I am the vine and you were the branches until you went and screwed it all up and sinned and you hated your neighbor and you failed to love with act and act with grace and mercy. Jesus didn't say that. And Jesus did not say, I am the vine and someday, when you are worthy, someday, when you have earned it, someday, when grow up enough, you can be my branches, maybe. Jesus didn't say that. What did he say? I am the vine. You are the branches. Jesus isn't talking about our past. He's not talking about our future. He's talking about our present. This is already true. We are already connected to Christ. We are already growing together and working towards bearing fruit. So, how do we do this? That's a big question. How do we live as branches on the Christ family tree? We have abide. The word abide appears eight times in the first eight verses of John fifteen. When something's repeated in the Bible, pretty close together, a second time, it means pay attention. What do you think it means when it says it eight times in eight verses? Pay attention. Abide. The word abide means many different things. It means dwell abide me. dwell right here. It means remain where you are As if you have put down roots there. Be fully present. Abide with me. Jesus says. Abide. Continue in the place where you are. Stable. Fixed in place. To abide is not a passive word. It is an active word. To with Jesus means to choose to be grafted to Jesus Christ and to stay right there. To abide with Jesus is to live where Jesus lives, to be fully present to what god is doing in the world and to be to remain committed to being right by Jesus's side. Jesus is our vine and we are the branches. I read a commentator this week who suggested that maybe what is going through people's minds when we hear this is that I'm this branch over here and you're that branch over there and there's another person that's a branch over this way and like, no, no, no, no. This isn't a one for one, one branch for one person. We are not individual branches responsible for our own well being, responsible for our own fruit. Independent apart from and disconnected from everyone else's fruit and well being. We, together, are the branches off of the vine of Christ. We together are called to bear fruit. We together are called to be healthy and connected to god As branches. What has to happen to a plant every once in a while for it to be healthy you know where this is going. We have to get pruned. A good vine grower, a good orchard grower, a good farmer will prune. Pruning is critical. It's a critical step for a good, healthy growth of a plant. But geez, doesn't it feel painful sometimes? Sometimes, god prunes us cuts away the dead programs, trims away those fruitless projects, takes away those things that are draining life from us. And it is very hard to let those things go. Because we love them. And they have been a part of us. But now, to be healthy, god, the vine grower, prunes away at us. Have you seen that to be true here at Saint Andrew? I have loved hearing your stories of all the past decades of this congregation before I came. I've heard about your beloved programs. I've heard, I've seen the evidence of what these things have meant to you in your lives and in the lives of your children and your grandchildren and the generations that are coming behind us. I've seen the places that have been pruned away. And I know you're still grieving those. Mexico trips. That was significant for this congregation and this community Some long-time Mariners groups that have just faded away. Felt like they've been pruned off. Various staff positions we used to have. That was pruning. They've been trimmed away because the need for that project has passed. With the funding dried up. Where the people were no longer interested in continuing that particular ministry. God has pruned them away. We can grieve those losses even as we give thanks to God for the projects that meant so much. And then we can redirect that energy that was heading out towards that end of the branch. And redirect that energy to and growth to places where there will be new growth. And new potential. And new hope. New life will come from those healthy connections. To Jesus true vine. Jesus said, I am the true vine. My father is the vine grower You are the branches. May god grant us the courage and the strength and the wisdom to grow into this reality. Can I get an amen? Let's stand and sing together. Hymn number one hundred and eighteen The day of resurrection. Now, join me with this affirmation of faith from John, first John. Beloved, let us love one another because love is from god. God's love was revealed among us in this way. God sent his only son into the world so that we might live through him. Beloved, since god loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. So, we have known and believe the love that god has for us. And those who abide religion it's good enough good enough it's me oh So, let's pray. Gracious and merciful god, we are your branches and we are gathered here today to be nourished and nurtured so that we can bear good fruit. Hear us now as we pray. God of new life, hear our prayer. Oh god, our creator, we thank you for the amazing beauty and diversity that you have created. We are in awe of your playfulness and your colorfulness. Thank you for the crops that surround us that are growing well. Thank you for the birds that are flying overhead. Thank you for every creeping, crawling, swimming creature. And thank you dear lord for the diversity among your people too, our colors, our abilities, our work. May we appreciate what you have made and take good care of it. God of new life, hear our prayer. God who tends to all life, we pray for those people who are struggling against sin and death and war And terror and destruction. We pray for the people of Gaza and Israel. For those of Ukraine and Russia. We for the Sudan, for Myanmar, for Ethiopia, for Haiti, for Armenia and Azerbaijan, for the US and China, we pray dear lord for cool heads, for helping hands, and for broad, open hearts, god of new life, Oh god of hope, we pray today for our neighbors nearby. We pray for the diversity of this community For our neighbors who walk through our parking lots, and for our neighbors who come to the food pantry. We pray especially this day for our unhoused neighbors and ask for wisdom to know how to help. We pray for all people of faith that we each might live out our faith in ways that build up the community and dear lord, may we do no harm as we live it. God of new life, hear our prayer. People of god, for whom else do we pray this day? Ask you to raise your hand and the microphones will come to you. Um from those people online, they're asking that if you hold the microphone, hold it straight out like this and say your so they can know who it is that's giving the prayer request and when you're finished with your request, say god of new life and we'll all join together. This is Donna Smith and I want to pray for thanks for the life of Lynn Smith Young who passed away last evening and prayers of comfort for her husband, her brother, and her daughter. God of new life. Hear our prayer. Uh Diane Bryant here. I just like to ask for continued prayers for the people that I've been working with and getting them housed and into their new life. Yeah. May goodness and mercy surround those whom we love, and those whom noone loves. Gracious and almighty god, thank you for listening to our prayers. Thank you for loving us so much. Thank you for calling us to join you, to be grafted to you in this Easter season. We pray all these things together in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray together saying, our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. The hymn, if you want to sing it with us, is number three hundred and90 during the offering. Please join me in prayer. Holy father, you are the vine grower. Jesus is the vine. We are the branches. The gospel of John reminds us of that. To abide in Christ and he will dwell in us. He will be present in us. Help us to stay present in you Lord. Help us to learn to be intentional in our decisions to be faithful both in your in prayer and in action. To abide you Jesus and so let us offer these gifts intentionally. Let them be used to grow our branches, to reach out into the world, to bear fruit that feeds those who need it, To know you, need to know you, Lord. Jesus, bless these gifts. Help them to energize new branches that reach out and love both in the community and throughout the world. And in your son's name we pray, amen. You do not need potting soil or the watering can But you do have holy work ahead of you. So, go out into the world and be a branch. Be a part of this vine of Christ that is growing in the world. Now, here and abide with Christ. Go now with the love of god, the grace of our lord Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit and let all god's people say, Notice the new word. Next slide we changed it so that we know exactly who said it. It doesn't start and he any longer. The peace of our lord Jesus Christ be with you
