You can get to the beginning of the trail by bus 240 from Jeju or Jungmun (bus schedule is attached). From the Yengosil Ticket Office stop it takes about 40 minutes to walk to the trailhead.
Entrance for pedestrians is free (parking is paid).
To climb in winter you need crampons; you can buy them in the shop at the beginning of the trek.
The whole journey from the bus stop to the Witse Oreum shelter and back the same way took me 5.5 hours (including rest and snack at the top). You need to take food and water with you; there is nowhere to buy it at the top. There is a toilet in the shelter.
Allowable start times for ascent and descent for different trails and seasons are shown in the attached table.

we brought our 2 kids up : 4 years and 10 years old. Our 10 year old was a champ and walked all the way up to the Witsaeoreum shelter - but it was very tiring for him on the way down.

Our 4 year old needed a lot of carrying up & down the track, which strengthened and tire-d out our quads/calves!

i would do this trail again but will stop at the top of the stairs overlooking the mountains' scenic views. Going through the plains was just alright and i felt there was no 'reward' to go further.

The spring water was amazing - cold and fresh!

would love to try this trail again in autumn!

We cancelled the summit trail the previous day due to low cloud and forecast of sleet/ wind. Arrived at the first car park ( 2.5km from road end) at 12 noon on a Monday. There was a one car in one out policy so took about 40 minutes to get through the barrier. Last entry 2pm ( April) ADVISE arrive earlier esp if weekend.
It’s an easy trail , 5 miles return 1450’ of ascent - lots of steps! We took 2.5hrs. It’s disappointing do not allow access to the summit via this route - at the trek top is a cafe.
Scenery was good , great views but suspect flora would be much better in later Spring or Autumn.

A snowstorm happened the night before. Ice crystals formed white flowers on the windswept trees at the top of the trail, contrasting against the deep green leaves of short bamboo grass on the forest floor. Glittering sheer cliffs of white snow under the blue sky and a view of the mirror-like ocean and Jeju city in the distance. The clouds flowed like ocean waves close by above my head. Cawing ravens broke the still winter silence and I spotted a pair of deer leaping through the forest path. Many flights of stairs and occasionally rocks at the start of the trail but gentle inclines near the summit and the shelter at the top connects to other trails. It took me around 5hrs total to hike (had to walk an extra 2.5km because they closed the road to the second carpark due to the snow on the road. I also stopped for photos a lot). Totally worth it though. As a sedentary office worker, I still managed the hike so it’s not that tough but you might still want to exercise a bit before going. Might be difficult for older folks or very young children because of the height of the steps at some points. Lots of friendly hikers along the way of all ages. Walk light-footedly or step down sideways to reduce impact on knees and calves. I recommend purchasing snow crampons and hiking sticks from the city if the weather forecast dips below zero for hallasan. A raincoat and overcoat is also good as it gets noticeably colder higher up. Bring energy bars/sugary food and some flasks of hot water. Go early in the morning, ideally reaching the start of the trail at 7am as the sun may later melt the snow (Early Dec)

Did the Hallasan Yeongsil Trail last week. Took bus #240 from the Jeju City Bus Terminal (₩1150 with T-money card). Bus journey was about 1 hr, after passing the Eorimok entrance and the 1100 Highlands stops. After these stops is the Yeongsil entrance stop. This is NOT the stop to get off. The bus continues to the next Yeongsil Ticket Office stop which is the correct stop to get off. There is no fee to do the climb, the tickets required are for parking. There is a toilet stop here.

For those without your own transport, you have to walk up a 2.5km gentle upslope, for about 45 minutes to get to the trailhead (sadly, many cars passed us, 3 small elderly ladies, by, but none offered a ride). There are more parking lots at the trailhead, toilets, benches for resting/picnics and the obligatory signs and signboards before you start on the trail.

The start of the trail was gentle, with short wooden and/or rocky stairs. After about 30 mins, the climb got steeper on mostly wooden stairs, first amongst woods, then into an open scenic vista. This stair climb lasted for more than an hour for us, with frequent rests at the lookout points built alongside the stairs, until the trail leveled out to the famous view of open plateau with the Hallasan backdrop.

Once there, you can opt to climb another 300+ steps to a lookout platform, or continue on the boardwalk to the Witse Oreum shelter, which cannot be seen until you approach it. We covered the entire 3.7km trail in the recommended 2.5 hrs.

After a quick pre-packed lunch (didn't see any food on sale there, seats available both inside and outside) and a toilet break, we started down via the Eorimok trail.

The initial 15 minutes were along the boardwalk with the same beautiful scenery on the way to the shelter. Then the trail became rocky with volcanic rocks. After a while, the downhill started. We left the open views to rocky paths amongst woods again. This continued all the way down, for about 2.4 km according to the signboards that were posted at intervals along the trail. There were no more scenic views, just the trees on both sides and the rocky path down, down, down. You can imagine how tough and boring it will be to do this trail in reverse.

You reach the end of the trail after crossing a bridge over a dried up river full of rocks and boulders, and then you are at the hugh car park which marks the Eorimok Entrance. We completed the 4.7km trail also in about 2.5 hrs (that is, coming down).

After a toilet break and obligatory photos, we walked about 1km (mostly level) to the main road where the bus stops to Jeju-si and Seogwipo were. Only bus 240 plies this route. Tip : take a picture of the bus schedule pasted at the bus stop where you first get off for reference.

This was one of the shorter trails (5.8 km) of Hallasan which brings you to Witae Oreum Shelter. But after the first section which is through a forested area, the trail gets rather steep and rocky. It can be challenging for those who are not used to such steep ascent. With frequent stops along the way, it took us almost 3 hours to reach the flat area which leads to Witae Oreum Shelter. From there, you get an excellent view of the summit of Hallasan. Scenery along the trail was amazing and highly recommended.

The descent is along the same path and less exhausting. Wear good hiking shoes and bring ample food and water along as there is no food at the top. Best to start the hike early say 8 am as the carpark (next to the trail entrance) fills up quickly.

제주도의 산책 코스로 한라산 등반과 함께 즐기기 좋은 곳이다. 눈이 조금 오는 겨울에 산책을 하면 더욱더 아름다운 제주도의 모습을 볼 수 있다.

The trail is relatively easy and is one of the shorter trails that takes you up Hallasan. The views along the trail are amazing and very well maintained. There are plentiful rest stops along the trail with excellent views of the surroundings. There are 2 carparks here. Do wait a little or arrive early to gain access to the car park nearer to the trail. The outer carpark requires a 2 km walk. Parking is very limited and controlled vehicle entrance to the car park near to the trail. Cater around 4 to 5 hours for a return trip from the nearer car park. Definitely worth a visit.
