Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I have to say I am a bit biased because I too am an unpaid volunteer here. This is such a great place to volunteer. There is a little gift section and The Center for Creativity in a back gallery space that's great for kids with lots of projects to do. The museum is expanding in the near future and will have at least double or triple the size. And it is FREE! You can make any donation to the M as you want and become a member. The opening parties for the shows are a blast and you can rent out the space for receptions or class reunions. The M has several pieces donated by the wealthy old guard of St. Paul. Even with a much bigger space it is impossible to show all of them. The Minneapolis Institute of Art switches their paintings in the permanent collection. The Gordon Parks/Jamel Shabazz show this Spring and Summer was fantastic and broke all attendance records. Legacy Coffee and Chocolates is just upstairs. They do close at 3 pm. The M is currently closed until 2021.

Current exhibit on lynching in America is timely, but short on pieces while also being kinda abstract. More space would be helpful.

We visited here on a Saturday morning and there was no one else here. We parked on the very empty street and plugged the meter for an hour and a half.

The display was a Visual Arts Exhibition by the Saint Paul Public Schools. At first I thought I would be disappointed but it was done very well. Each piece of art was completed by an elementary or high school student and they each wrote a personal note on what the art meant to them.

I was surprised at the introspection of these young people.

Although the museum is free, there is a box where you can leave a donation.

I'm sorry to say this was a bummer. This museum is well-publicised. It's listed in the St. Paul official visitors guide as an attraction and we like art museums so we tried to find it. After walking around the area where it is several times with no success, my husband saw a very small sign lettered on a doorway. Inside, there was a lot of construction and a very busy lady on the telephone. When she finished her conversation, we asked if this was the museum. She tried to sell us a book and tell us the museum has a huge collection. Where is it? Maybe it will be displayed someday but not now. Not worth going until they have gallery space. I would suggest telling tourists the museum is under construction rather than publicizing it as a major attraction.

Disclosure: I'm a big fan of this museum, but also currently an unpaid volunteer. I became a volunteer because of my experience there in the Summer of 2014, and I'm very pleased to welcome visitors to the museum today.

With the historic Pioneer Endicott building as it's new and hopefully permanent home, the MMAA is St. Paul's primary art museum. The gallery space is currently modest, but it's used remarkably well and it's a gorgeous mix of white walls (typical) and antique patterned floor tile (atypical). Gallery exhibitions reflect a wide array of artistic movements and ideas. What connects both the contemporary shows as well as the permanent collections is the focus on regional connection. Artists showcased actually reflect the breadth of native and immigrant ethnic diversity in the state -- much to the credit of the curator and museum staff. All of the exhibits I've attended so far have been very well labeled and presented.

The museum also offers a tremendous series of related events -- musicians, speakers, performers -- for each exhibition as a part of its "Project Space." All of this is offered to visitors free of charge, with only a humble request for a donation in the box when a visitor is able and interested in giving.

As a visitor, I always feel engaged here, without the usual fatigue that accompanies an art museum visit. As a volunteer, I've been heartened by the way that we are encouraged by the directors of the MMAA to foster a welcoming, inclusive museum space. Visitors remark that they are thankful for the MMAA, and are very interested in its growth in the coming years. You are encouraged to come and see for yourself. When you are in St. Paul, make a visit a priority, though check the website for updated hours and events so as not to arrive on an off day.
