Maybe I've got city pop on the brain, but I get big city pop vibes from this one. Listen to "Simone" and tell me I'm wrong.
Jeff Porcaro is back, and with him comes Ray Parker Jr. and even Carlos Santana. Like an anime protagonist, Scagg's strength is his friends.
But while the final song is called "You Got Some Imagination", that's something this album could have used more of. It doesn't have the legs for a 40-minute album (used too many on the album cover).
Grade: B-
Unpopular Pick: Simone

below aberage yacht record.
Nothing on this one couldn't convince me, not even the hit singles.

I bet this record was a lot of fun to make. Just look at the players! You've got David Foster on synths, Steve Lukather and Ray Parker Jr. (pre Ghostbusters fame mind you) trading licks, Jeff Porcaro on drums, and good ol' Boz Scaggs still riding high from Silk Degrees four years earlier. Hell. Even Carlos Santana stops by for a song! I mean the playing and production is just fantastic and everyone sounds like they are having a blast.
Unfortunately, however, it is not 1980. We're not wearing reflective shades, skinny ties, and bright clothing. And we're not doing tons of coke in a smoke-filled studio. Some Yacht Rock just doesn't seem to translate to 2020, and I'm afraid that this album gets lost in translation.

35DP 3 CD (1982)
"Jojo" was one of the best singles in the charts of 1980 and a perfect opening track for "Middle Man". Unfortunately that was about it, nothing else comes close to it. "Simone" is the only other reason for keeping this album, but especially side B is - considering the involved musicians - very disappointing!

This is pretty much everything bad about mainstream radio pop circa 1980.

Not too many pop stars would have had the taste back in 1980 to hire Guy Bourdin to shoot their album cover. One more bit of evidence that Boz was operating on a higher level than us mere mortals. Too bad he decided to get off the fast track after this record and tour; like every other field of endeavor these days, pop music needs more professionals at work.

An insanely underrated album, and probably the best set of songs the Boz has ever laid to record. Oh, and Jojo is one hell of an opening number...just putting that out there. :P

couple of hits, classic cover and one of the best voices in the business
