    Go for the fried chicken!
We usually visit after driving Skyline Drive. Located near Jefferson’s Monticello in a historic building. Not for everyone as menu is limited - fried or baked chicken, bbq pork, some vegetables and salads. Go through buffet at first, and Waiters bring seconds of anything you want. Deserts are terrific, but cost extra. Several craft/gift shops on property. Worth the drive!

    Historical tavern
Good buffet in a historical tavern, it’s right down the road from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello & near Carter’s Mountain Orchard. It’s a limited buffet, but the food items available were quite tasty, the pleasant waitstaff brings out more of whatever food or drink you would like. It’s a little pricey at $27.99 if you’re not a big eater, unfortunately desserts aren’t included and you pay extra for drinks which is to be expected. The fried chicken was my favorite, so delicious! Two nice shops are on the property, which is always a plus when being a tourist!

Aggravating wait leads to possibly the best fried chicken on the planet
This historic tavern has possibly the best fried chicken I have ever sampled on the planet. It is fried chicken that sets the new standard upon which other fried chicken can be judged. The opinion of the fried chicken was shared by fellow diners. Crowded. The service is an assembly-line type buffet. A rather long line formed just to get into this place. What you will find particularly aggravating (bordering on outright anger) is that tour buses will arrive, people will pour out of the buses and straight into the tavern, and thus set back the entrance line for another 20 or 30 minutes. Does that make sense that the buses are given immediate seating priority? No. But, the quality of the fried chicken is hard to erase in one’s mind. The fried chicken is so good that it is worth the unbelievably aggravating wait. Very nice gift shop adjacent to the tavern.

    The best Southern cuisine!
The full lunch fare is served buffet style with all extra helpings (seconds) brought to the table by the waitstaff. Michie Tavern has the best fried chicken you will find anywhere! Large bus trips do stop here also, but it doesn't slow up service for everyone else. They have their own dining area and separate buffet line. My wife and I have been there no less than 50 times. Authentic Southern cuisine!

    fun historic experience
cozy historic atmosphere, warm friendly service, lovely respite from a wet blustery day. fried chicken was amazing! other food items were average more or less. this restaurant is definitely about the experience with less focus on food quality. food was fine, just not great. nice gift shops.

    Disappointed
I had heard about Michie Tavern and maybe my expectations were too high so I was disappointed. A wait to get in. A very small buffet area with just a few selections. The chicken was good - but that was the only entrée. The sides were ok. Dessert was extra. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and fetched seconds. The history of the site was interesting and other buildings have been moved from around Virginia and reconstructed here but they weren't very interesting. The gift shop was large and I suppose there were some nice things in there, but the potpourri was heavy and the place was full with shoppers on a bus tour, so I didn't stay long.

    Don’t miss the buffet
Lovely period inn with gift shop and some outbuildings. Great lunch buffet of period foods. Gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan options clearly marked and vegetarian buffet is less expensive. Waiters are wonderfully personable and will bring you as much food as you want. A little on the pricey side, but worth it for the experience.

    Buffet style
The Michie tavern is not far from Thomas Jeffersons Monticello. It is Buffett style dining. The food was delicious southern style food. The Cole slaw, fried chicken, baby beets, cornbread , biscuits ,mashed potatoes, black eyed peas and gravy was fantastic. I highly recommend stopping and trying out this restaurant if visiting Monroe's or Jeffersons homes.

A must stop for the food and atmosphere!
What a cute little place! We were skeptical about stopping here because of the mixed reviews. I am SO glad we decided to try it for ourselves. The food was delicious and it really looks like an old tavern inside. The food is a buffet, you get your first serving yourself and then your waiter/waitress gets anything else you might need or want. Everything is served on tin plates and cups. I thought the price was reasonable for the food we had. It was good southern, homemade cooking. I really wanted to try the peach cobbler, however I had no room for dessert because I got seconds from the buffet. They also have a gift shop. Monticello is right down the way so we stopped here for lunch after touring there. Highly recommend!

This historic Tavern was the perfect stopping place for lunch after we spent longer than anticipated at Monticello. We were starving and so the fact that this was right next door to Monticello was convenient. I loved the historic building, the waiters and waitresses dressed in period garb, and their traditional southern lunch was delicious and filling. Excellent customer service! Unfortunately, the other buildings on the property were closed by the time we were done with lunch. I'm not sure if this was because of the time of day or because of the coronavirus regulations but that's why I gave this review four instead of five stars.

First off, I was told that my kids would all be free, but then when checking out, they said that since it was 2 adults, 1 of the 3 kids would be full-price. The problem was that my youngest was less than 1 and he didn’t even get a plate. So for us to eat with 1 beer for each of the 2 adults was $60. With tip it turned out to be $70. Good experience, but not worth $70 after spending $60 at Monticello.

The Michie Tavern is a beautiful historic tavern to visit but the food buffet at $22 was not appealing so opted out. It has limited items, about 4 vegetables and 3 meats, but it looked very dried out. Enjoyed the Gift Shop next door in separate building.

If you are looking for a place to warm up by a fire with specialty root beer in a tin cup (or a variety of other beverages), Michie Tavern is the place to go.

While you're there be sure to "Throw a Goose" or "Shut the Box", a couple of pub games from the *way back* days.

If you have a hankering for a good story (or to have the rules of the goose game explained), ask for Eric, the pubmaster!

And be sure to visit the gift shop! And the pub restroom! I know that last suggestion is odd, but you have to try the Virginian liquid lemon soap. And smell your hands an hour later to make you wish you'd bought a bottle!

Hmmm, the more I think of this review, the more I should tell you NOT to go because it is absolutely charming when very few people are there. 😉

The location, building, historical environment, and staff were excellent. The food options and quality were, at best, average. For the price, there should have been a few more food options to choose from and the price should have included beverage and dessert. The mashed potatoes were awful -- watery/soupy.

What an amazing place to eat....It is by definition a buffet, but the experience is more fine dining! You can go to many "greasy spoon" buffets and consume pizza, steak, chinese food, ham, etc. all in one place and all taste like budget frozen microwave meals! Dine here and enjoy a basic yet high quality meal with an amazing atmosphere! The staff is top notch and the price is great. Some complain about spending 20 bucks for a high quality all you can eat meal in a superb atmosphere-yet the same people would probably spend 12 bucks for a fast food combo burger meal that is tastless...go figure? Ignore negative reviews and go enjoy yourself!

While visiting family in the area, we were treated to this restaurant. The atmosphere was nice, although we sat in a newer addition of the restaurant. It was clean and the waiters attentive. The food was very good, but a little expensive in my opinion. It was nice to go through the buffet-style line and choose what you wanted when arriving, and then have wait-staff bring you refills when desired. I loved the coating on the fried chicken, and it is available for purchase at the little store next to the restaurant. If you are delighted with history, this is a great place to visit. There are several other buildings to look at, and easy walking paths to get to each one.

Original 1700s building first floor provides a quaint feel of the period now serving southern fried chicken meals buffet style. Eating tables are small and rustic but comfortable enough to gve you a feeling of the historic period. Wait staff and servers are all in costume and well trained and pay attention to visitor's needs. Chicken and sides available are excellent.

This is a very quaint historical inn - originally a stage stop back in the late 1700's. Food is served buffet style, so limited choices. Fried chicken and pulled pork are great! Service is very friendly and attentive. Nice attendant attractions include a general store, grist mill, etc. All authentic to the period. If you are visiting Jefferson's Monticello (just up the road) this a MUST for late lunch. A great experience for history buffs.
