Yeoh was born on August 6, 1962, in Ipoh, Malaysia. She hails from a Malaysian Chinese family of Hokkein and Cantonese descent. She is the daughter of Janet Yeoh and Yeoh Kian Teik, an MCA politician and lawyer, as well as an investor of the express bus service, Si Maju. Yeoh has been interested in dancing from a very young age. She learned ballet at the age of 4.

Yeoh attended Main Convent Ipoh. Later she moved to the United Kingdom at the age of 15, where she was enrolled for a boarding school. She went on to study at the UK’s Royal Academy of Dance, London, majoring in ballet.

A spinal injury forbade her from becoming a professional ballet dancer. Thus, she transferred her attention from choreography to performance arts. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts with a minor in Drama.

Yeoh won the Miss Malaysia Beauty Pageant in 1983. She was just 20 years old at that time. Later that year, she traveled with other participants to Australia and participated in 2 other beauty pageants. She won both of them. Apart from this, Yeoh has also appeared in a commercial with Jackie Chan.

Yeoh appeared in Yes, Madam, Police Story 3: Super Cop and Tomorrow Never Dies. She always did her action stunts. She has also appeared in The Heroic Trio, Tai Chi Master, and Wing Chun. Her co-star, Pierce Brosnan, said that she is a “wonderful actress” and is “serious and committed to the work.”
