Excellent experience! We "stood" in the area behind the goal with the most enthusiastic Mainz fans. This included drums, large flags, chants and cheers. The atmosphere was very exciting! We had beer (Bitburger, brats, burgers, pretzel and pizza) and found all the food to be pretty good. We did go to the fan shop and get a fan card before the game (10 Euro) and refunded after the game. This card is required inside the stadium to purchase food and drinks. We loaded it with 50 euro and that was plenty for a few beers each and plenty of food. We had a great time at the game and enjoyed the arena!

Coface Arena is the homefield of the Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05 - a team that has never won any titles but has smartly managed to establish itself in Germany's top football league. The arena opened in 2011, the old home field Bruchwegstadion (just 2 kilometers away on the other side of the University campus) is still in use by their second team and as the pros' training facility.

Coface arena holds 34.000 visitors - and contrary to popular belief does only sell-out when really big opponents such as Bayern, Dortmund or Schalke come around. So on gameday you may just hop on a free shuttle bus at Mainz Hauptbahnhof (main station), walk together with the red-and-white fan crowd to the gates of the arena, buy a ticket and experience the crazy atmosphere of a German football pitch (plus world class sports, of course) first hand.

For extra excitement get tickets for a stand! Coface arena has the second largest standing area of all German stadiums and Mainz is known for its enthusiastic yet fair and respectful fan scene. Home stands are blocks P, Q, R, S, tickets start here from 13,50 EUR. Expect to pay at least twice as much if you want to place yourself into one of the red plastic seats.

To buy a beer and bratwurst (or better the spicy "Feuerwurst") you have to get a pay-card at one of the kiosks next to the ticket counters or inside the arena and turn your cash into credit. You can return the card and get the unused credit back in cash after the game. There is absolutely no cash accepted at the snack bars.

The arena naturally also features a large fan shop. You may pay cash or card for merchandise there.

A 'free' bus ride from Mainz HBF, modern but has incorporated a standing home terrace which on my visit was only 13.5 euros to get in.

This is a great modern stadium, easy to get in and out of, good sight lines, loads of beer and food points and tills. Match ticket includes a free shuttle bus too and from main rail station. Pitch is sunk down so stadium looks tiny from outside.they don't take cash, you have to pay €10 for a card which you load cash onto.

We went here for a bundesliga game of Mainz and they beat Augsburg with 3-0 so we had a great time. There are free shuttle busses from the centralstation, just follow the crowd it should be impossible to miss. Indside the stadium you will need to buy a fancard since you can't buy any beer or snack otherwise since they just take the pre-filled fancard. Buy one at the loading stand and afterwards you can return it and get the deposit of 10€ back, it went very smooth.

My trip was on Friday 27th to see Mainz v Frankfurt. Based myself in Frankfurt and took the train into Mainz itself. Turning right out of the station you can pick up the free feeder bus to he ground. From here there is a bit of a walk down to the stadium, but you just join the masses till you get there

The match atmosphere was fantastic, though the match itself wasn't the best. Great fan shop next to the VIP entrance area. Plenty of choices. Staff around the stadium friendly & helpful at all times. 50 euros for a good seat. 1 euro for match day programme

Would certainly visit again

Visited here in September on my Bundesliga travels to watch Mainz vs Hertha Berlin on a Saturday afternoon in September. This is a decent modern, compact ground where there isn't a bad seat in the house as far as views and legroom are concerned.
To get there, shuttle buses run from just outside the train station and they're plentiful and well organised.
As a neutral, head for block G behind the goal if you want to be near the away support, of block F is a relaxed family stand. Block O offers a cheap option close to the Mainz 05 faithful.
Food and drink in the ground is paid for on fan cards, not cash, which is frustrating for the one-match visitor.
My only gripe is that it wasn't the most atmospheric of grounds - one look at the old stadium they moved from suggests that was a lot noisier and a lot more fun.
It's a good option to tick off some German football in a pleasant city, with tickets relatively easy to get hold of.

My wife and I did a day trip to Mainz to watch a pre-season friendly match ( Mainz v Liverpool.
The free match day bus service from the main railway station to the Opel Arena is a fantastic operation but one alights a very considerable distance from the stadium. The walk is too far!
Traffic is a nightmare.

Inside the ground I was disappointed that the stewards didn't enforce rules regarding being seated. I missed much of the first half with fans stood in front of me. If it's all seater then they should be made to sit down.
Thank God that UK football stadia are no alchohol. Many fans at the Opel Arena seemed more interested in beer than watching the game. Many were the worse for wear.

We went to Coface Arena for a Bundesliga match and had an absolutely fabulous evening of sports entertainment. At 34,000 it is a perfect size for a soccer arena in my book - enough people to give it a great atmosphere, while not so many that you lose the intimacy.

We ate brats from the stands outside the stadium, which we thought was a great value - until we got into the stadium and found that it would have been even cheaper inside! Not a lot of variety of what to get, but it's central Germany, after all, so I wanted brats and wasn't expecting anything else!

We got standing room tix in the supporters section, which I probably wouldn't do in just any stadium, but the crowd here was well behaved while still being greatly entertaining. The entire section sang almost non-stop, and there was more energy and excitement in the stadium than most athletic events in the US. Being a smaller town with a smaller team works in the favor of an arena like this - it was a crowd entirely full of people there to support Mainz soccer, which was great.

Plus, there were guys with huge head costumes dancing for a long time during the pre-game, I was entertained.
