The M-G-M Cartoon Studio[1] (also known as the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio, MGM Cartoons, the M-G-M Cartoon Dept.[2] and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Cartoon Department[3]) was the studio responsible for the Tom and Jerry cartoons by Hanna-Barbera, plus shorts produced by Tex Avery, Michael Lah, and Harman and Ising. Friz Freleng was also involved with the studio during the late 1930s, having previously worked with the Warner Bros. cartoon studio (then known as Leon Schlesinger Productions); Friz later left and returned to Warner Bros.

MGM closed the studio in 1957, finding enough cartoons made for the foreseeable future.
