This movie kept me watching all the way through. It's about a farmer with financial woes whose about to loose his farm. Everything is going wrong until he finds a wrapped scarecrow in his barn. He hangs it up hoping it'll scare the crows that are eating his corn crop. It works, it doesn't just get rid of the crows it kills them all. But it also kills anyone that gets in the way of the farmer's plans to prosper. Just when everybody thinks that the farmer is a mad killer the scarecrow starts to move by trying to kill the rest of the farmer's family.

Remember that movie The Messengers? That movie about a family moving into an old farm house that's haunted by the ghosts of a murdered family? You know what that movie was missing...a killer scarecrow! Well that's what the people behind this movie must have thought. The Messengers 2: The Scarecrow is neither a sequel as the title says, nor is it a prequel to the movie The Messengers. Seriously, this movie has absolutely nothing to do with the first movie, hell it doesn't take place in the same farm from the first movie. Also we went from ghosts to a demonic scarecrow, how did that happen? Despite that, this movie was ok, even as a standalone movie. Norman Reedus did a good job as the lead and there were parts that did scare me, despite the goofy final battle with the scarecrow. But still I have to ask...WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? What I think is that this was supposed to be a stand alone movie but some big shot executive thought it was a good idea to slap The Messengers title on it for whatever reason. I'm not saying the first movie was bad, in fact it's one of the few movies starring Kristen Stewart that I can actually tolerate, but I don't think making this set in the same universe as that movie was going to be either successful or marketable. Like I said before, it had nothing to do with the first movie at all. But it was still an ok movie to watch.

I rented this just for the fact that I wanted to see Norman Reedus. I am a huge fan and wanted to see him outside of his Daryl Dixon character in The Walking Dead. I was not disappointed in his performance, however, his supporting cast were horrible...especially the neighbor's wife, Miranda. Uggg. Norman's character, John, is the only one I liked. His wife in the flick was simply a prude and I was actually hoping she would be a victim of the scarecrow just to get her to stop her incessant whining. This "prequel" has very little to do with the first Messenger and leaves no cliffhanger for the second (first) Messenger. As some reviewers already mentioned, the scarecrow creature started out in the movie as just that, a skinny, poorly put together scarecrow. Toward the end when we really get to see him, he's two times as big and extraordinarly muscular. He actually looked like a guy in a black body suit with grape vines tied around his arms. Pretty poor. Also, at the end, there's a dead body in the barn and the family just walks away, arm in arm as if everything is all over. What did they do with the body? No hurry since the guy is already dead? His police cruiser is still in the yard. I might feel better about the ending had the second (first) Messenger picked up when the family called someone about the body in their barn, but it doesn't. Not happy with the movie overall, but very happy to watch Norman Reedus in action.

I believe there was a Messengers movie before this about the same farmer but I never saw it; nevertheless this movie is good enough to stand on its own. It's definitely a thriller bordering on Horror. A down-on-his luck farmer finds a new meaning to "reap what you sow" and it all revolves around a very creepy scarecrow, who isn't JUST UGLY. The farmer must question whats right or wrong, is good worth the evil it's come from, how much does family mean and on top of all else - is he just losing his mind? Great acting, suspenseful story and good special effects.

Farmer Rollins droht die Zwangsversteigerung seiner Farm und der Verlust seiner Maisernte durch eine Schar von Krähen. Als er in der Scheune durch Zufall eine alte Vogelscheuche findet und aufstellt, scheinen sich seine Probleme wie von selbst zu lösen. Das größte Problem von "Messengers 2" ist das letztlich inkonsequente Drehbuch von Todd Farmer. Fast 45 Minuten benötigt der Film um langsam Fahrt aufzunehmen und die von der Vogelscheuche ausgehende Macht zu demonstrieren. Nur selten gelingt es dem Streifen dabei eine unheimliche Atmosphäre aufzubauen. Die Aufnahmen im Maisfeld bilden hierbei eine der wenigen Ausnahmen. Hier hätte man wesentlich zügiger zur Sache kommen können. Weitere 25 Minuten werden dann weitgehend verschwendet um die Eheprobleme von Rollins ausführlich zu schildern, den Aspekt der Hexenmagie im Film zu verankern und zwei überflüssige Nacktszenen zu präsentieren. Die Bessenheit des Farmers wird zwar zunächst recht gut dargestellt, erweist sich jedoch letztlich als sinnlos, da die Endphase des Film durch einen herkömmlichen Budenzauber á la Hollywood ersetzt wird. Die mentale Übernahme des Farmers durch das Böse wird plötzlich zugunsten eines herkömmlichen Showdowns mit einer zum Leben erwachten Kreatur geopfert . Der zu weiten Teilen vorgesetzte Psycho-Horror wandelt sich zum Schluß zu einem konventionellen Monstermovie der Marke "Vernichte das Monster und rette die eigene Familie!". In die letztlich entscheidende Übergangsphase, in der Rollins sich mental befreien kann und das Monster erwacht, wurde zu wenig Zeit investiert und wirkt daher auch recht holprig. Die darstellerischen Leistungen sind passabel, können aber gegen die Schwächen des Drehbuchs nicht allzuviel ausrichten. Die vorliegende Blu-Ray besitzt eine recht gute Bild- und Tonqualität. Das vorhandene Bonusmaterial besteht aus einem Audiokommentar und einigen Trailern. Fazit: Vogelscheuchenhorror der letztlich nur mit einem spannenden, aber höchst konventionellen Showdown aufwarten kann. Hier wäre eindeutig mehr drin gewesen! Die 3 Bewertungssterne konnten deshalb nur knapp erreicht werden.
