I enjoy working with all my clients, however, I have specific training working with troubled youth. The world is hard to navigate as adults and can be even harder as a young adult,
teen
, or
adolescent
. In my experience depression and anxiety are secondary to the trauma caused by unresolved issues. These issues affect both children and adults. This can often express in opposition to rules, defiance, self harming, alcohol and drug use. I can help. I understand what its like to feel misunderstood in a world filled with overwhelming decisions.

I'm an Individual & Family Therapist in practice since 2005. My background includes 12 years (2005-2017) working full-time in long-term
teen
residential programs as a therapist & Training Director before I opened a private practice in 2017. My advanced training allows me to treat a broad scope of issues but I don't pretend to specialize in everything! Specializing only in: 1) Teens / Young adults, 2) Parenting & 3) Christian counseling. I have 20+ years of student ministry & ministry leadership experience. My career in residential care has trained me to treat the toughest challenges teens, young adults, & families can face.

Life is often stressful and relationships get messy. It’s hard to navigate and work through major life transitions and adjustments especially when they are complex and you are facing more than one at a time. There is hope and there is help available. You are not alone. I believe counseling can be a beneficial healing relationship experience that requires collaboration between client and therapist. I enjoy meeting and working with people, helping connect them to resources, identify their strengths, work through life challenges, and begin healing while offering support, encouragement, and a listening ear.

Are you feeling overcome by relationships, health issues, or work? Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed trying to keep up with the daily demands of life. Each of us has primary needs to feel safe, secure, protected, loved, and connected. These innate needs follow us throughout life and have a significant impact on our ability to experience life to the fullest. When our fundamental needs are not being met, we can experience significant negative emotions & stress. Our primary essential needs are satisfied physically, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually & behaviorally, but we have to be intentional and active in that process.

I have been in practice for 30 years as a clinical psychologist. I provide a safe and supportive environment for my clients. I use mindfulness techniques for therapy in addition to a compassionate presence. These approaches include mindfulness to resolving situational depression, teaching clients to overcome overwhelming emotional situations, relaxation techniques to quiet your mind and body, and therapy to assist each client to function each day with calmness and clarity. I am a very proactive therapist, allowing individuals to explore their own thoughts, feelings, behavior patterns, and develop an action plan that best suits their personal growth.

This process can ultimately create a positive impact on the quality of your daily life. I am honored and amazed at the resiliency and courage of clients as they strive to achieve overall health!

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
