The 1993 hood classic "Menace II Society" is one hell of a movie. It takes place in Watts, Los Angelas, and from start to finish, the movie is like one long roller coaster ride. The cast is excellent, the story is VERY realistic and believable. This has to be one of the best hood movies made, along with Boyz N The Hood, Juice, and New Jack City (more of a drug movie though). The violence never stops, and the overall grimey feel of the film never seems to leave. The movie definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat, however cliche that seems to sound. It's very hard to predict what's going to happen next with every scene, and it all comes down to a depressing end.

The story is told by Kaydee, or Caine, who is a little...well, troubled. His dad was murdered when he was young, and his mom overdosed on drugs. As the result, he was sent to live with his very religious grandparents. At the beginning there is a fitting flashback to his childhood, where he sees his dad murder another man at a party over money. Throughout the whole movie, Caine is pressured badly by his best friend, O-Dawg, who is young, black, and don't give a f**k, or in other words, America's nightmare. At the same time, he is dealing drugs, and trying to help out Ronni, his female friend, and her son, Anthony. Ronni tries to steer him in the right direction, along with several other adults and another friend. However, that doesn't mean that Cain listens. The story is well crafted, and the characters are very believable. You have the main character who is torn between which path to take, the other who doesn't care, one who is very religous and tries to get his friends to be the same, and one who could be a football player. All of the characters help to contribute to the movie.

Many people compare this to Boyz N The Hood. I like both movies, but I will say that this one has more of a ghetto feel to it. There is way more violence and bloodshed than BNTH, and there is a hell of alot more of smoking, drinking, and drug dealing. I still like Boyz N The Hood a tad more, for some reason that I don't even know. The acting and cast is great. Tyrin Turner as Caine, Larenz Tate (one of my favorite actors since this movie) as O-Dawg, and Jada Pinkett as Ronni are all wonderful in there performances. All the other actors do great in their roles too. The whole movie is shot brilliantly, and shouldn't be missed by movie lovers.

So, I'd suggest you pick this movie up, especially if you like Boyz N The Hood, Juice, New Jack City, Above The Rim, etc. Maybe if you just like violence with a message. The movie is great, there is not a single thing wrong about the picture, script or acting. There is one thing, just like in Boyz N The Hood: There are a few racial insights but not much. Just a few racial comments are made toward Caucasions, so if you're easily offended do not watch this film, or ignore the comments. Otherwise, rent this movie when you see it. You'll get your money's worth, and there's no doubt about that.

This is one of the greatest movies that I have ever seen in my life. I haven't watched it since I was a teenager. I remember being thoroughly entertained by the movie when I saw it at the theater back in 1993. Still, when I watched it yesterday I was surprised at how incredible it is. All of these years later - and after viewing thousands of movies during the past 2 decades - I can honestly look back and say that this movie ranks among the all time great films as far as I am concerned.

I put this up there with The Empire Strikes Back, Do The Right Thing, To Kill A Mockingbird, Goodfellas, The Godfather (Parts 1 & 2), Die Hard, Taxi Driver, Akira and a handful of other movies that I have come to respect as the best of the best.

The mix of drama and comedy is not rivaled by any other movie that I have seen. As serious as the subject matter in the movie is - I don't think that I have ever laughed so hard at some of the scenarios that play out in a film. The characters are realistic (I knew somebody like every major character in the film when I was growing up) and despite the comedic output the grim tone of the film is somehow preserved throughout the entirety of its' running time.

This is a classic film and deserves to go down in history for the delightful performances by the leads, the insightful writing and direction that captures the danger and excitement of the lives of these characters and the incredible cinematography.

The film received widespread critical acclaim at the time of its' release. It won a best film award in 1994 and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography in the same year. If you look at the list of movies that came out in 1993 you will note that those are incredible achievements for a film with the modest budget that Menace II Society was created with. 22 years after the debut of Menace II Society I think it should be looked back upon as the cinematic masterpiece that it is.

This is more than upper echelon film making. This is one of those times when all the stars lined up perfectly for a project and everything fell into place to create something that exceeded the bounds of perfection.

Sollte man Anfang der 90er Jahre Boyz n the Hood gesehen haben, so war man sicherlich sehr neugierig auf Menace II Society, die viel gepriesene Coming-of-Age Geschichte, die ebenfalls in einem überwiegend von Afroamerikanern bewohnten Ghetto spielt. Menace II Society wurde 1993 veröffentlicht, von der Kritik hoch gelobt und stellt das Regiedebüt der Hughes Brothers (Albert und Allen) dar, die später auch bei Dead Presidents (1995) und From Hell (2001) Regie führten. Der Film, der für seine übertriebene Gewalt und seinen obszönen Dialog bekannt ist, wurde von vielen Fans für seine unerschrockene Darstellung des Lebens in der „Hood“ gelobt, von dem man als Mitteleuropäer normalerweise ziemlich wenig Ahnung haben dürfte.

Nach seinem erst kürzlich erlangten High-School Abschluss wird Caine (Tyrin Turner) zum ungewollten Komplizen eines spontanen sowie brutalen Raubüberfalls auf einen Spirituosenladen, der von seinem Freund O-Dog (Larenz Tate) verübt wird, nachdem der vom vietnamesischen Ladenbesitzer beleidigt worden ist. Mit Hilfe einer Reihe von Rückblenden erfährt das Publikum nun, dass Caine inmitten der Stammkundschaft seines drogendealenden Vaters (Samuel L. Jackson) aufgewachsen ist und währenddessen nur sehr wenig emotionale Unterstützung von seiner Junkie-Mutter erhalten hat. Nachdem sein Vater bei einem Drogendeal erschossen wurde und seine Mutter an einer Überdosis Heroin gestorben ist, wird er zu seinen äußerst religiös gesinnten Großeltern nach Watts (eines der Ghettos von Los Angeles) geschickt, wo er jedoch in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters tritt, indem er während seiner High-School Zeit Dope auf den Straßen verkauft.

Zurück in der Gegenwart: Caine und sein Cousin Harold (gespielt von Saafir) wollen sich nach einer Party mit ein paar Freunden treffen, werden aber stattdessen in einen tödlichen Fall von Carjacking verwickelt, der Harold den Tod und Caine schwerverletzt ins Krankenhaus bringt. Diese plötzliche sowie unerwartete Begegnung mit dem Sensenmann sollte Caine eigentlich genügend Anlass dazu geben, sein Leben und den Weg, den er eingeschlagen hat, neu zu überdenken, doch selbst die gut gemeinten Belehrungen seines Freundes Sharif (Vonte Sweet) reichen nicht aus, um ihn zum Umdenken zu bewegen. Stattdessen begehen er und seine Gangster-„Freunde“ ein grausames Verbrechen nach dem anderen und legen dabei eine ständige Missachtung der grundlegenden Menschenrechte ihrer Mitmenschen an den Tag. Wird Caine jemals die Konsequenzen aus seinem Handeln ziehen und einen besseren Weg (der sich durchaus in Reichweite befindet) beschreiten können, oder befindet er sich bereits auf einem Weg ohne Wiederkehr?

Menace II Society hat im Laufe der Jahre enorm an Popularität gewonnen, obwohl ein Großteil des Publikums große Mühe damit haben dürfte, sich mit all dem zu identifizieren, was während der 97-minütigen Laufzeit passiert. Wahrscheinlich liegt das an der mangelnden Auseinandersetzung mit den Elementen, die für die in den Ghettos lebenden „schwarzen“ Jugendlichen sehr wohl die Realität des Lebens bedeuten können. Außerdem kann man sich als Zuschauer sicherlich nur sehr schwierig mit dem Gefühl von Normalität anfreunden, das sich im rücksichtslosen Töten, Schlagen und Rauben zeigt, das den gesamten Film durchzieht. Natürlich wird sich dabei auch auf den Teufelskreis der Rache bezogen, doch diese moralische Frage wurde bereits von Boyz n the Hood in höherem Maße angesprochen und wird in Menace II Society nur als Nebensächlichkeit abgehandelt. Die schiere Anzahl von ungerechtfertigten Morden lässt einen schließlich fragen, warum irgendjemand überhaupt die Sicherheit seines Hauses verlässt!? Man müsste wahrscheinlich selbst in einer solchen Atmosphäre aufgewachsen sein, um sagen zu können, ob der Grad der Brutalität zutreffend ist.

Das Maß an willkürlicher Gewalt und Missachtung menschlichen Lebens ist schon nur schwer zu ertragen, was sich jedoch noch abstoßender gestaltet, ist die Darstellung von afroamerikanischen Jugendlichen. Wir sind uns alle der rassischen Stereotypen bewusst, die das Umfeld eines Ghettos begleiten, doch es erscheint etwas anstößig, all diese Vorstellungen in einen Film dieser Art zu stopfen, ohne die größeren sozialen Auswirkungen angemessen anzusprechen, die der Grund dafür sind, warum jede dieser Generationen in derselben Falle festzustecken scheint. Nahezu jede Figur hat Erfahrungen mit der Polizei oder mit Justizvollzugsanstalten gemacht, während ihre Profanität auf eine Art und Weise aus ihnen heraussprudelt, die beinahe schon ans Komische grenzt. Außerdem kann man in einer bestimmten Szene (in der Caine und O-Dog in Watts an einer Reihe von Wohnhäusern entlangschlendern) beobachten, wie fast jeder „schwarze“ Mann an einer 40 ounce Flasche Olde English 800 (Malt liquor) nuckelt. Nun, in Boyz n the Hood wurde auch das Leben im Ghetto porträtiert, allerdings nicht so einseitig wie in Menace II Society. In Boyz gibt es neben einer Fülle an negativen Figuren nämlich auch noch etliche Personen positiven Charakters zu sehen, die es auch verstehen Einiges zu bewirken. Um fair zu bleiben, tauchen solche positiven Charaktere mit Ronnie (Jada Pinkett Smith), Caines Großeltern (Marilyn Coleman und Arnold Johnson), Sharif (Vonte Sweet) sowie dessen Vater (Charles S. Dutton) ebenso in Menace auf, doch wird ihnen nicht annährend so viel Beachtung geschenkt, wie in Boyz.

Abgesehen von diesem kleinen Mangel ist das Schauspiel der Hauptprotagonisten darüber hinaus als durchaus kompetent zu bezeichnen. Tyrin Turner hat in seiner ersten richtigen Hauptrolle schon einiges zu tragen, doch abgesehen von ein paar steifen Sequenzen gelingt es ihm seinem Charakter Caine emotionales Gewicht zu verleihen. Larenz Tate versteht es bestens als extrem unausgeglichenes Babygesicht O-Dog zu beeindrucken. Er repräsentiert die Art von Freund, die man auf seiner Seite haben möchte, der man aber niemals den Rücken zudrehen sollte. Die Riege der Nebendarsteller wird durch einen kurzen (jedoch sehr coolen) Cameo-Auftritt von Samuel L. Jackson als Caines geistig sowie körperlich zerrütteten Vater Tat Lawson abgerundet. Außerdem kann man einen frühen Auftritt von Jada Pinkett Smith als Caines „Freundin“ Ronnie bestaunen, genauso wie die kleine (aber wichtige Rolle) für den bei Weitem nicht ausgelasteten Charles S. Dutton als Sharifs Vater, der Caine dazu bekehren möchte, ein besseres Leben zu führen. Ach ja, der Rapper MC Eight ist als drogendealender A-Wax auch mit von der Partie und hat sogar den Titelsong „Streight Up Menace“ zum formidablen Soundtrack des Streifens beigesteuert.

Menace II Society ist ein Film, der das Publikum sehr wahrscheinlich stark polarisieren wird. Nach seiner positiven kritischen Aufnahme im Jahr 1993 und dem Kultstatus zu urteilen, den er über die Jahre aufrechterhalten konnte, gibt es anscheinend sehr viele Zuschauer da draußen, die unsere Begeisterung für den Film (bis auf ein paar Kleinigkeiten) teilen. Glücklicherweise sind wir selbstverständlich nicht in der Lage, die Genauigkeit der Darstellung des Lebens in der „Hood“ (das im Film porträtiert wird) zu beurteilen, weswegen wir diesbezüglich in Richtung Boyz n the Hood tendieren. Aus technischer Sicht dürfte die neue Scheibe von The Criterion Collection eine deutliche Verbesserung in der Audio-Kategorie zu bieten haben, die es hervorragend versteht die visuelle Kompetenz auf dem Bildschirm wunderbar zu ergänzen. Sollte man sich Menace II Society mal wieder anschauen wollen, so gibt es keinen besseren Zeitpunkt als die Gegenwart.

Loved this as much as when i first saw it and the new remastered bluray is superb as are the extra new features.
To the previous reviewer who told us all to beware because the UK version doesn't have the 4K disc...The description on Amazon stated it wasn't 4K, it wasn't even in the title. So why warn everyone and give the release 2 stars? You made the mistake of not reading the description. It isn't Amazon's or Criterion's problem.
