- Mike SLondon, United Kingdom125 contributionsVery enjoyable dayWent to Melbourne Zoo primarily to do the Orangutan experience. Jake and Mia were superb guides who cared deeply and passionate about conservation. The experience was so special to see these beautiful animals up close. The Zoo itself was clean and tidy and the animals were well cared for. Easy access from the city via Tram 58Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023
- Aussie_Tourist79Sydney, Australia605 contributionsBrilliant Zoo, easily spend all day hereWe have been to a lot of zoos and highly rate Melbourne zoo. We easily filled in the entire day. There were plenty of places to sit, get some food and take your time exploring the grounds and discovering the animals. Butterfly houses are always amazing and the zoo has a well balanced variety of animals so most of your group will be happy and see something they want. We enjoyed toi many of the exhibits to list them all here. The zoo was top class. We spent most of the day and skipped a few exhibits as we were tired. Allow to spend the whole day here as you easily will.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 November 2023
- Jestaurant-reviewsWellington, New Zealand30 contributionsNew Zealanders at Melbourne Zoo!A group of 7 of us are in Melbourne visiting from NZ. We initially thought the zoo pricing was a bit expensive at $46 AUD for an adult ticket. However, we ended up spending 5.5hours there and enjoyed our time immensely. The layout of the zoo was fantastic, as was the cleanliness of the facilities and paths around each of the enclosures. The staff we saw were all friendly and the cafe where we had lunch had a good range of options. There were also lots of spaces to stop for water or eat if you wanted to bring a packed lunch. The animals were all well looked after and had large enclosures that looked really nice. Our favourites were the tigers, meerkats and elephants. All in all, would be an espeacially good place for young families and kids as there are lots of interactive areas and cool animals. Highly reccommend!Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 November 2023
- AbbottHsuSerang, Indonesia823 contributionsOne day tourPretty good, designated and well organized layout inside. Visitors can easily find the way to see all kinds of animals. Since it is semi-open space, you can feel the natural and primitive atmosphere by searching those animals. Too be honest, it is not easy to see lots of animals in close distance. Kids are so happy to take a look at those creatures. A good opportunity to teach and interact with kids in zoo. You can spend half day inside to explore what you want. However, sometimes some animals may hide, sleep or go anywhere so that they are not available when you visit. For me and kids, it is a wonderful experience to visit this historical zoo. Easy to take Trams or Metro trains here. Enjoy.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 4 December 2023
- Darkest_dreamingRedruth, United Kingdom287 contributionsLovely zooLove this zoo! It’s got so much to see, so many different animal varieties, lots of places to stop and rest and refuel. The zoo isn’t particularly ’smelly’ like other zoos I have visited in the past so that’s hopefully a good sign that the animals (and park) are looked after well. I’ve since purchased an annual pass so am excited to go pretty much wherever we want and don’t have to pay an entry fee. Lots of shops in the zoo (I think at least 4?) and they have some lovely gifts in all of them.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 January 2024
- Stacey ODallas, Texas18 contributionsBeautiful zooMelbourne Zoo is one of the nicest we’ve ever visited. It’s clean and well thought out. The animals appeared to be very well cared for and their habitats designed so they can be out if/when they choose. Unfortunately, the platypus wasn’t up for visitors the day we visited so we left Australia without ever getting to see one. 😭Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2024

Melbourne zoo would have to be one of the best zoos to visit. The habitats are carefully thought out to offer the best for both animal and visitor. There are plenty of places to get food or bring your own. Lots of different animals you don't see at other zoos.

We had a fun day out at the zoo! It was really easy to access from the tram station! We paid for tickets online and got into the zoo easily. The animals looks well cared for and the staff knew a lot about them. We watched the giraffe talk and hippopotamus talk. The volunteers around the park were also very helpful asking if we needed help or had any questions!
We ate lunch at the macaw takeaway and the food was good but quite simple (watch out for seagulls)

Took my father there for as something special to do for the day and turned out a waste of money. Most of the enclosures were empty and the elephants look sad and depressed. The whole place is spread out, spent a lot of time walking around and not seeing all that many animals. Very disappointed, if I could get a refund and turn back time I would.

My only negative review about the zoo was that when we walked to the animal enclosure some of them had signs saying animals not on display. It would have been more helpful for the signage to be at the entrance before you walk to the enclosures.
The zoo has such lovely gardens and well kept.
There are lots of great educational children activities to do throughout the zoo that relate to the attraction you are visiting.
We stopped at the giraffe cafe and was lucky to get a table to watch the giraffes, just gorgeous.
Ordered an iced latte, was a bit ordinary and the hot chocolate wasn't that hot.
But overall reasonable prices.
Highlights wee seeing the lemurs, butterfly house for the children, orangutans, snow leopards and lions plus so much more.
With little ones there's plenty of places to stop and have a break and a few playgrounds.
Really easy to get there from the city by either train or tram.
Children free during Victoria school holidays so that's a definite bonus.
A lovely morning

My sister and I went last night we had Ariel and Cate as our guides they were amazing and made the whole experience so memorable.
We had a night walk where we saw the lions up and about, then this morning went into the elephant enclosure and hid food for them such a fantastic experience all round.
Lovely food and great atmosphere in camp .
Thank you both for making it a night we will never ever forget.

Has to be the WORST Zoo I have ever been to. Expensive!!! Boring!!! Most animals were not even in the enclosures. I have been to dozens of zoos over the world and this is the absolute worst in every possible respect. I had more fun at one of the food areas because there was an Iguana under my table who I could acutally see and touch. Kangaroos? FORGET IT!! There aren't any. Koalas" FORGET IT!!! There aren't any!!! WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love the layout of the zoo making it easy to navigate your way around. Unfortunately lots of the animals were “hiding” or were a long way away in their enclosures so there were many that we could only just see from a distance or couldn’t see at all (not the zoo’s fault but makes for a disappointing experience). Loved the giraffes and the butterfly house the most.
There are lots of cafes located in different areas of the zoo. Food was very average at best and overpriced but the coffee was good.

Nice Zoo. Parking cost $2.20 for 5 hours and with a quick lunch we walked out just on 5 hours.
A few animals missing would have been good to have a list at the front of which animals were not there.
There were still lots to see we even saw baby Meerkats which was pretty special.

I would definitely recommend Melbourne. It has so much to see and do from 3 different zoos to theme parks, to going to the Australia Open in January if you are a tennis fan, to many different markets, galleries, museums and exhibitions.

When is the best time to arrive to avoid long queues as it’s school holidays now (Melb)?

Sorry about the late response.
I have never queued more than three-deep at the zoo.
Busy, would more likely happen when there is a night concert or event on.
School groups, during term would make for queues.

How do I get to the Zoo by public transport from Collins Street please?
B D
Melbourne, Australia21 contributions
Take the Tram from the corner of Collins Street and Elizabeth Street. towards North Coburg Route 19. Its about a 6 minute walk when you get off at Royal Parade/Parkville (through Walker St and Kendall Av, into Poplar Rd where the Zoo is...)
Alternatively, take the Upfield Line Train from Flinders St Station in the City. Get off at Royal Park Station, Parkville. Its a 7 minute walk through Upfield Bike Path into Poplar Rd).

Hello,
if I am going to the zoo with a group of students but would like to pack our own lunches, would there be any spot inside the zoo where you can sit in a group and have your lunch/ simple picnic?
We want to avoid eating in the restaurant to save cost.
thank you
