History

Since J.A. Henriques was appointed Consul in 1852, the United States of America has maintained a consulate in Melbourne, Australia.

The Consulate General moved to its present location on St. Kilda Road in 1990 and works to promote close ties between the United States and Australia.

The Consular District covered by Consulate General Melbourne includes Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory, which comprises approximately 35% of Australia’s population and land area.

Consular Operations

Consular services offered in Melbourne include assistance to American citizens, issuance of passports and determinations of U.S. citizenship, and visa services to Australians and other foreign nationals. Consular Services are provided by appointment only. For general inquiries:

    • Email: MelbourneACS@state.gov . Email inquiries are answered by the ACS Unit at the Consulate throughout the business day; however more complex inquiries are generally responded to within 1-2 business days.
    • Emails sent over the weekend or on Australian and U.S. public holidays will be responded to on the next business day.
