After a three month hiatus from social media and the public eye, except to attend the 2019 Met Gala and announce her Chris Brown feature, Nicki Minaj broke her silence by tweeting and writing on her Instagram story one word: “Megatron.” The cryptic message became the name of a promotional single for her currently untitled fifth studio album. “Megatron” was released on June 21, 2019.
Named after the sentient robotic alien creature from the Transformers media franchise, Megatron is known as the leader of the villainous group the Decepticons, and as the arch nemesis of Optimus Prime, the original protagonist of the series.
This isn’t the first time Nicki has titled one of her singles after a villainous character. Back in April 2018, Nicki released the lead single “Chun-Li,” a song named after the first female character and “bad guy” from the video game series Street Fighter. “Chun-Li” was released alongside “Barbie Tingz,” a song which interestingly contains the line:

Nicki first compared herself to the character Megatron on Future’s October 2018 track “Transformer:”

On June 19, 2019, Nicki posted a short clip of the music video on her Instagram and Twitter:
The song uses the “Filthy Riddim”, one of the most popular riddims in dancehall/reggae music. Used famously in the dancehall classics, “Murder She Wrote,” “Heads High,”and “She Nuh Ready Yet“. Nicki is no stranger to flowing over this classic riddim, having rapped on it for French Montana’s 2013 hit, “Freaks.”
