The Blacklist Finale: How Did Liz Keen’s Story End? And Who Is Red, Really?
The following post contains major spoilers for The Blacklist‘s Season 8 finale. Proceed with caution!
Elizabeth Keen’s name was crossed off The Blacklist on Wednesday night — and it appeared to be done in permanent marker.
Just over a week after news of Megan Boone‘s imminent exit from the show broke, the NBC drama wrote out her character by killing her via a gunshot in the back. (Read Boone’s farewell to the series here.)
The premise of Wednesday’s Season 8 finale was simple: Red promised to give Liz a letter her mother had left for her, which contained all of the long-awaited answers about Red’s identity and why he came into her life. But before she could obtain the letter, Liz had to kill Red.
With Neville Townsend recently eliminated, Red was certain that numerous other criminals would soon descend, all jockeying for control of Townsend’s empire. And since Townsend learned Red’s real identity before his demise, his potential successors all likely had that information, as well, which would put both Red and Liz in danger once again. The solution, as Red saw it, was for Liz to murder Red — cementing herself as a criminal not to be messed with — and inherit The Blacklist from him, which would give her necessary protection against any approaching enemies. Plus, Red’s mysterious illness, which hadn’t been mentioned in quite some time, is apparently terminal, and Red seemed to welcome the idea of finally surrendering to it.
After much internal debate (and a serendipitous run-in with a young woman whose life she saved back in the pilot episode), Liz agreed to Red’s proposal, and the plan was set: Liz would shoot Red in the street that night, shortly after he left a private party at Pascual’s restaurant. But when it came time to murder Red that evening, Liz aimed her gun at him, but couldn’t bring herself to pull the trigger. “I don’t want to,” she said, tears in her eyes. “I understand,” Red replied. But before Liz could do anything else, she was shot in the back by Townsend’s right-hand man, Vandyke. (Long hair. Beard. You know the guy. And Red immediately shot him multiple times in retaliation.)
As Liz collapsed to the ground, she saw her life flash before her eyes — bittersweet memories of Tom, Agnes, Dembe, Aram, Cooper and Ressler that doubled as a tribute to Boone’s years on the show. And when Red returned to Liz after killing Vandyke, Liz looked at him with a curious expression as memories of both Red and her mother, Katarina Rostova, played out in her mind, almost as though she was understanding Red’s real identity in that moment. And as Liz died, a flashback of Katarina kissing Baby Liz on the forehead when she was born was immediately juxtaposed with Red kissing her head in the present day on that street corner.
As is The Blacklist‘s way, it was never explicitly announced that Red is indeed Katarina. But Liz’s combined memories of Red and Katarina seemed to indicate as much, along with other hints Red dropped throughout the finale. “You knew her well?” Liz asked Red at one point, referencing Katarina. “Better than anyone,” he replied. And later, when Liz asked why she couldn’t know Red’s identity until he was dead, he told her, “Because if you knew beforehand, you’d never agree to kill me.” At this point, would it even make sense for Red to be anyone else?
Shortly after Liz’s death, Dembe pulled Red away from the scene and they fled on foot, just moments before Ressler, Cooper, Aram and Park arrived. Though they’d hoped to catch Red and Liz in time to intercept their murder plan, they instead found Liz lying on the street, with Red’s fedora tucked under her head.

So dumb, so pointless. Wasted a lot of years on this show and it turns out blah. Also, a show without Liz isn’t really going to be much of a show, I already stopped watching this season when she was absent, can’t imagine watching a show when I know she is dead. For me the show was about the 2 of them, I wouldn’t want to watch if it was just Liz either.
She has always been the weakest part of the show to me and the character has been so awful the last few seasons. I didn’t want her to die though.

Come on guys. Have you not been paying attention. It is a cliff hanger. The last episode showed us how red identity was assumed. That’s right good ole plastic surgery. This is how next season will go. Keen is dead but the heir returns after being saved and having a new face and identity. My prediction.
I hope that would be the case. Recast the role of Liz with a new face.
Why kill her off ? I think she could have just taken over Reds empire even if it is not the same actor … live with her daughter

Keen can come back , another face , Red is really the core , to me all of them are amazing , without them Show is not really happening , I just hope Elizabeth would be back She must enjoy her daughter Red worked hard to protect her . My theory: the mysterious guy who walked into the beach house along with Katarina was her lover at the time and he’s Liz’s real father. With the death of the real Red, this mysterious lover became the current Raymond Reddington. He was the guy who saved Katarina from the fire and ended up getting burned too.
So you think the DNA test that Liz had that confirmed the real Raymond Reddington was her father was falisfied?
If I’m not wrong, the DNA test proved that it was the real RR in the suitcase and not necessarily that it was her father…
Is this a set up ? Raymond knew she wouldn’t kill him and that her death is faked like she did once for Everyone else?
I think wrong people to right off the show… as still brilliantly clever we still left on a cliff edge really knowing .. but spader and Boone make this show without one of them will be hard

The real question is, is that the end is the series? Hope not.
When Red was in prison, he would have been stripped searched. No matter how good the plastic surgeon was you would know Red was female

The implication that Red IS Katrina does not line up. I cannot believe that the love of Red’s recent life Anne would have continued with a trans man. No judgement, just an illogical/not credible characteristic of church-going, Audubon-loving Anne. I still am a die-hard fan of the show, Spader, The Team, Dembe, so I will religiously watch whatever is offered in the future. Mazel tov, Megan Boone, whatever you choose. Next!
Agree…Katarina has been shown as being of slight build and shorter than “the new Red” so I doubt that could be altered with plastic surgery. Likewise Red had distinctive facial expressions that just couldn’t have been contrived by Katrina. I think Red really is Red and survived the shot and they fire – like any hero would!!!
Ray is Elizibeth’s mother. The surgery was a sex change.

I’m glad Liz finally realized that Red was her mother even though I thought she should have picked up on it sooner. Very sad ending and even though Liz drove me crazy especially the last couple of seasons I didn’t want her to die. I guess now Red has to watch over Agnes.
Honestly, I think most people thought Red was Katarina for a while now—what else could Reddington have said to Alexander Kirk back in S4 to get him to immediately back off killing him for causing Katarina’s death and never turning up ever again?
Completely agree, I’ve been saying it for a while and trying to get my parents to believe me. I think the last two episodes finally have them convinced. They thought I was nuts before. Lol
To be fair, Bokenkamp (sp?) has been trying to deter us from that theory for a while now, most obviously when “fake katarina” showed up.
Too simple. Red never slept with any women throughout 8 full seasons. You’d think there would’ve been at least some intimate activity involving Red. Granted, this isn’t the clincher, but it shan’t go unnoticed with respect to Red’s true identity. Also, other hints, like Red informing Liz she’d never kill him (now her) if she only knew who Ted really was, made the ending more of a confirmation. Most of us knew Red was her mother anyway.
Red did have a female lover whom Liz accidentally killed. Townsend sent his goons to the small town where she lived. Red and she sought safety in the local sheriff’s office but Townsend’s men shot up the place. Eventually, they were driven off. Red and girlfriend took off. She went back to her house and Red drove away. However, while driving, he realized how much he loved her and turned around to return to her home where he found LIz holding a gun on her. A struggle ensued and Red’s love fell and hit her head and died.
Also, Red confirmed that he is bisexual, having had both male and female lovers.
He did have a caring relationship with that woman who died. It shook him up badly. Can’t come to terms that Red was trans. Too convoluted.
HA, my mom keeps telling me I’m crazy every time I say Red is her mother….and last week I told her the episode tonight was entitled “Redarina.” 😛
Just rewatched the second to the last episode where Liz is getting the storyline in slow motion and the song playing is “this Is a mans world” lol. Says it all.
I can think of an endless number of things Red could have said to Kirk, none of them as far fetched as Raymond being Katerina. Ask any surgeon and they will tell you it’s a lot easier to dig a trench than build a pole. As far the “magic” surgeon goes, he changed identities, not necessarily a magician. Implanting an “Adam’s apple”? To many hints and visuals point to Red as being a male relative. I think a lot of you are just trying to justify an unknown solution..
I agree. The actor that plays Katerina is small and has a slight frame. Red has a large frame. Gender reassignment surgery can’t make you taller and larger.
So if Red is Katarina that means she had to have a sex change! SERIOUSLY! So how did he make out with his girl Ann? Nope, absolutely not. I’d rather believe he’s her real father.

I quit watching the show a long time ago so please excuse this question if it sounds dumb, but, how was Red liz’s mom? Did he have a sex change or am I way off?
Yes, a sex change to protect herself and so that she would still one day be able to enter Liz’s life as a parent. Plus access to his money. There was an episode a few seasons ago about a top secret doctor that could change someone to another’s identity. Red stopped Liz before she could get the doctor’s client list or info if I remember correctly. Plus Red has taken mystery medication for a while. There have been other big hints over the years and more this last season.

In theory you don’t actually see her eyes close…..whatever you think about her acting or Liz as a character she deserves a happy ending with Agnes and if she actually is dead what on earth is the point of the show they have sacrificed how many people to keep liz alive?!!?! This smacks of the most stupid plot ever or twist.
I believe the 9th season should be the last and maybe MB will appear in the finale most new sites said she’s not a regular anymore doesn’t mean she can’t appear

So now Agnes has no mother or father! This is crazy. Agnes has gone through enough. When Ressler found her why didn’t he try to do CPR to keep her alive until paramedics came? If Red is her Mother that does sound far-fetched. More believable is he is her real father. Someone in the comments thought it would have been good for Red to tell her who he is to Keen and a shot of her eyes open up in amazement. That would have been great. I was very aggravated that, we, the audience, once again get no answer after watching all these years.
CPR only works if there is blood to pump around. Liz had most of her blood in a puddle moments after Donald got there. The bullet must have severed a main artery and dumped all of her blood outside of her.
I agree with you. The last two episodes were really out of step with the whole show of 8 seasons and made no sense at all. We have loved blacklist from the first show, but this was just so contrived, even for a show whose premise is as farfetched as blacklist, that I don’t know if I can keep watching it. First if Red was dedicated to protecting Liz the last thing he’d want her turned into is a murdering criminal who would be hunted by police and criminals the rest of her life. Or to carry the burden of his murder . Nope this made no sense and made Red look like the bad guy to me.
The only way this can be fixed is if we learn that this was an elaborate plot to make it look like Liz is dead so she can start a new life with her child in a distant location.
Agree! If they think she is dead they will leave her alone! She has millions of his money and she and her daughter are safe. She and Wresler (sp?) move away like she and Tom! Red bot going to die unless this is the final season!!
I doubt the show’s writers expected Boone to bolt before the ending of the show. She was lucky to get the part with an accomplished actor like Spadder. Boone did them dirty. They’re left with having to pick up the pieces. I wouldn’t blame the show.
For pretty much the whole season I wanted Liz to take a bullet to the head. But could they have at least let her know that Red was really her mother first. I hated how this played out. The whole dying realization thing was a cop out to me.
Three things.
1. The news Megan was leaving should not have leaked, or been confirmed. It totally undermines the entire episode. We are supposed to believe the next season won’t have James but will have kingpin Megan, instead we know the opposite is true. I might not have even announced the renewal until the finale and allowed speculation of the final season to build to sell the finale and then announce the renewal right after.
2. The idea that Red didn’t have that street secured is laughable. What if a cop car drove by. What if a passerby was armed and thought Liz was mugging Red and pulled a gun. There are so many things that can go wrong, this plan was so bad.
3. We assume Liz realized Red is her mom, but we don’t know for sure. The thought of her dying without knowing the truth and having a discussion with Red about it is beyond terrible writing. It is a closed fist punch in the face of the entire fan base. It’s bad enough they kept the secret for 8 full seasons when the audience should know by 5 and the entire cast by 6, but we are left with no proper resolution. Terrible writing. The only way to save it is for Liz to live and return for the finale, but they already that in seasons 3 and 5 and they cannot do it again.
All networks announced their Fall schedule line-ups by mid-May which can be viewed by the publc as they do every year after the Upfronts.So to think NBC would not put Blacklist on it til now is just unrealistic. Also,one can look up actors’ contracts and whether they have been renewed or not.
Upfronts were wonky this year, and under a normal may sweeps format the blacklist would could have/probably would have aired its finale before upfronts. As for contracts, stars have been in negotiations even after renewals are announced. See Shameless and Castle as easy examples of female leads leaving but the announcement coming later.
The official announcement that Blacklist has been renewed by NBC for Season 9 was made back in Jan 26,2021 -literally half a year ago.Even if the Upfronts were run normally and even if Blacklist had aired all it ‘s episodes before the Upfronts people would (or should’ve) known the show was renewed before the Season finale.

Nope. And if Jon tries to make Red actually somebody else at this point, it wouldn’t remotely be a worthy payoff. It has to be Katarina.
Actually it can’t be her. They have always said that Red never lied to Liz. If that is true he can’t be Katarina because of one story line that kills it. Naomi Hyland. She was the real Reds wife before he disappeared. When the Decemberist took her and the subsequent story line unfolded Liz asked Red who she was and he said “my wife”. Not Reddingtons wife or any other hedging. Therefore if he is really Katarina after a sex change (which would make no-sense based on just physical size) he lied which destroys the whole Red has never lied to her thing. Plus the fact that the sex change/plastic surgery would have had to be performed in the 80’s/90’s and it wasn’t that great at that time. But for it to be Katarina then the surgery was so good it fooled his wife? Not very plausible.

Secondly, we already know Red has lied to her multiple times because he allowed her to believe that he WAS indeed her father at one point, and then Koslov. And, assuming that it doesn’t end up being this way, he allowed her to think he was Raymond Reddington.

You’re trying to equate current civilian standard plastic surgery techniques with a guy who was supposedly an absolute master of the craft and making people disappear for good. Secondly, its not like they’re trying to make us believe that somebody with Dembe’s height and frame is Katarina. Yes, Spader is bigger, but not amazingly so than the actress that has played Katarina in flashbacks.
And finally, the main reason for Red actually being Katarina is that there is no other ending that would be worth the 8 year build up. Some ‘random family friend’ would not have gotten that kind of a reaction from Alexander Kirk, nor would that person get such a reaction out of Liz as she died.
Agreed. The show has always been very smart. Now they’re selling this impossible storyline? Either they went woke or became desperate because MB left or they will reveal it was a fake out.
Will there be any more Blacklist? I know Elizabeth is leaving but James Spader is great and I know fans will continue to watch it w/o Elizabeth.
It will be back for a 9th season. I’m not sure I will be though. Stupid ending.
Liz had to die or go to prison. She lost her way and killed a lot of people.

Boone has been absent for stretches before (Maternity?) but her (apparently) being gone permanently would really put a crimp in the entire plotline.

How do you know for sure Al is dead? We never got to see the body after he was hurriedly wheeled into surgery. I think he’s undercover or in some type of witness protection

It still seems like the show tried to cram way too much into theses last two episodes. Was Megan Boone really that upset to leave the show? The Blacklist really started off great back in the day, but has gotten a bit stale due to the writers not seeming to know where to go. One of the Facebook “Blacklist” pages’ admins said she felt let down after this episode. I was always eager to get each season on Blu-ray as soon as it came out. I too, feel a little gutted snd cheated as to how the show has gone. This season after the the past couple of seasons really started to show promise. I feel like I got gut punched. Please make it up to us all next season. Of course that will depend on how the ratings are snd how many viewers over the last eight seasons that you lost this season. Best of luck. Thanks

Well, if she’s not actually dead. That ending was definitely hinting that the gunshot was fatal.
If you think about it. Katrina died became Red. Liz dies becomes his successor. Megan left the show so they can use a new actor.
And how many times did they “say” Red was her father? Then her grandfather? Then her mother’s handler? Then her mother’s lover?
I’m getting flashbacks to Spaceballs, TBH. ;)

Think about it: after 8 seasons of the buildup, and the sub-plots involving Katarina’s story, how can the ultimate payoff ever live up to Red being Katarina if it turns out Red is just some random guy who liked the Rostova family?
I mean, I suppose Jon could have something up his sleeve that makes Red actually Reddington, but thats about all I can think of.

Harold had a bloody shirt from the real Reddington, so that one showed that he was Liz’s father. DNA from the fake Reddington showed that he was not Liz’s father. Although if fake Reddington is Liz’s mother, wouldn’t the DNA test have shown that?

He told Liz that he was the one who took the picture of her and Katrina.
If you watch that scene again, Red says “I was there”—he never actually says he was the one who took the picture. That was pretty obvious that he was avoiding saying he took the picture, which probably means he wasn’t taking the picture.
No, he just said he was there. He never said he took the picture he just stared at the picture while saying he was there as if he meant I was holding you right there in the picture I was there!

No doubt the best written and acting show I have ever seen in my lifetime. I’m going to miss it. Sorry to see Megan writen of. She such a great part of the show.

If Liz is really dead, they will probably fast forward Agnes to a grown woman searching for answers about her parents. The Blacklist could once again redeem itself.
I have to agree with others here; you havent been watching a lot of shows at all. This show went down the crapper writing wise a few seasons back. Now with the resulting thud they ended Liz’s arc with..the less said. Her character was the worst written character in tv history, and I see a lot of shows.
The episode where Ray has visions on an island rescuing a drowning woman ,killing armed men together with this woman only later to be told that it had only been him at the island would confirm that she is actually katarina
Im so confused… so Red is really Katrina? Then what was all of the years with Red and the Grandfather about? It doesnt make sense unless I am missing something. The grandfather never acted like Red was his daughter?? Can someone explain? I feel like the writers were trying to do something different but missed the mark.
The grandfather acts like he is completely disgusted with Red, but we never really know why—merely that He(she) did something that he really didn’t like.
Which would make sense if Katarina abandoned him and her daughter to have a full sex change and extensive plastic surgery to become Reddington.
In short, I really cannot think of a single moment of the show (now that we know faux-Katarina is not actually Katarina) that makes it unlikely Red is Katarina. And plenty that points in the direction of “Redarina”. I’ve felt that way for years, ever since Alexander Kirk suddenly stopped killing “Red” for causing Katarina’s “death”—- with just something whispered in Kirk’s ear.
“I’m Katarina” would fit perfectly.
We absolutely needed Liz’s epic reaction to the revelation of Red’s real identity. I am incensed beyond ire that writers would have that much “cramp” in their wrists.
Most of us had a strong inkling who Red really was, but didn’t feel the show, despite the political implications it (particularly in Season 7) oftentimes featured, would go there. That idea i absolutely liked.
But still…… Liz was the perfect penultimate anti-hero in the making. And now that this wasn’t going to ever come to fruition, we are now devoid her much-desired reaction.
So be it. Thanks, Blacklist, for keeping me intrigued, nonetheless.
I still think Boone will be back before the end of next season (which might be the end), her final death doesn’t really make sense the more I think about it.
The writers put the bullet in her heart. Near enough, anyway. I believe that was a statement.

Last episode when Red was talking to Liz he mentioned how the grandfather had told Liz the truth up to the point of who Red was and Red said he lied to her about that part because the grandfather could not accept the truth his self.

I did not like her character most of the time but i also didnt want to see her exit that way. I just feel like there had to be a better way AND we could have gotten the truth out loud on who red really is
Not at all pleased with this episode. Doubt I will be back for season 9. They shouldn’t have killed off Liz. And Red as Katarina. Ugh! They could have handled this so much better. Feel like I wasted 8 years on this show for no good reason.

I thought Reddington was Liz’s mother with all the hints he dropped in this season finale. What a GREAT job the writers did with the show this year(2020-21). Excellent writing! Excellent plot twist! I got teary eyed at the end when Liz was having her flashbacks as she was dying. I will miss watching her character next year on the show. WELL DONE though Blacklist!!!!! WELL DONE!!!!!

Very Disappointing!! Her Daughter Agnes lost her Mom and Dad why couldn’t Liz just leave the Country with a new identity! I have watched the show since day one with one disappointment after another!! I would have never expected Liz to die Big Shocker!!! She had nothing but Sadness her whole Life!! And Raymond being Katarina Totally Ridiculous!!Who was the lady who played her Mom who Raymond killed?
I’m mad. I invested so much time in this – only to find out a long held theory floating around the chat boards is ‘implied’. Why not resolve the series? I would have watched season 9. The last memory was Red/Katerina’s. As Red held Liz dying he remembered holding her as a baby as Katerina and he kissed her as he did back then. That seemed to be confirmation to me that Red is Katerina.
