Medium is a revolutionary writing platform. They have built a community of readers from diverse topics. Writing on your blog is more personalized, based on a certain topic and you have to build your own community. On Medium, you could write one blog story and it might generate hundreds of dollars. The same concept can’t be applied to the articles you publish on your blog. Blogging on your blog is a long-term game while you can make money right after publishing your first blog post on Medium.

Before I started blogging on Medium, I have a website that was generating me over $1.4K every month through Google AdSense, I have an article about it where I explained how you can make $100 a day on Google AdSense, but with a new Google core algorithm update, I lost 80% of my traffic and my AdSense revenue goes down. I started writing on Medium. In this article, we discuss the pros and cons of writing on your blog vs Medium.

Writing on Medium as a Blog:

Medium.com as a blog is a good idea especially when you have to make money right from the first day. The platform has built-in traffic which makes it one of the best sites for writers. There are a lot of bloggers on Medium who originally published stories on Medium or we can say “Full-time Medium writers”

What is the Medium business model? Medium costs $5 to read articles, the Medium partner program is free to Join. You don’t need to invest money in order to make money writing on Medium. Medium pays you for getting reads from Medium members. So, there are no ads or anything. If you look into the future perspective, $5 isn’t a big amount, people are ad-blind and a large proportion of the Internet users are using ad-blocks. This makes the Medium business model is a very innovative and timely solution.

Follow Medium rules: My Medium account has been suspended two times but they reinstate it because the system flagged it wrongly. Medium, YouTube, Facebook, or all other social media platforms give you the opportunity to create content and make money but if you don’t follow their rules, your account will be suspended. Don’t start writing on Medium just for affiliate marketing because it is spamming. Just 5% of the Medium writers make more than $100 a month.

Here are the pros and cons of blogging on Medium:

Pros of writing on Medium:

  • Medium is free.
  • It has built-in traffic. This means that if you submit your stories to popular publications and get distributed then you could reach a lot of readers.
  • In the current state, Medium is one of the best platforms for writers. They are paying $0.03 per minute medium member read time.
  • Medium is a social media site so better to make new friends and make your community.
  • Medium has good SEO. In an article, we discussed Medium SEO you can rank on any keyword on search engines if you do the SEO the right way.

Here are some of the cons of writing on Medium:

  • The only thing that makes Medium isn’t an attractive platform for many people is that they suspend your account. But, the argument against this statement is that “There are people getting multi-millionaire because of third-party platforms like Medium”
  • The constraint in monetization ways. There are two ways to make money writing on Medium; through the Medium Partner Program and through affiliate marketing on Medium.

Writing on your blog, building a community, and making money

Starting writing on your blog is a way different experience. I started my writing journey with a free Blogspot (Blogger) blog and when I made enough money from that free blog, I bought a domain and hosting on hosted my website on WordPress. WordPress is amazing but there are two main mistakes that you should never do in writing;

Mistake#1: Don’t start writing about almost every topic you know about. Just write about a single topic that you know the most. I have listed some of the best niche Ideas that have a high CPC. I did this mistake. Keep in the note, you will still make money irrespective of what niche you are writing about but there is a very big disadvantage and that is “Sponsors will not reach out to you” and “You will not build a community”

Mistake#2: The hosting company. A lot of companies are selling your scum like Hostgator. A fast loading website has more chances of getting ranked on search engines, also you will not get more ad-clicks or clicks on your affiliate marketing.

There are a lot of pros and cons of writing on your blog and here are some of them.

Here are the pros and cons of writing on your blog

Pros of writing on your blog:

  • Your blog is your property. Nobody can take it from you. The article you publish today will still make money for years.
  • You can use your blog to monetize it in many ways. You can use over 15 powerful ways to make money from your blog.
  • You can use multiple design options to give your blog a professional look. This is very important as Medium you don’t have a lot of options to design your blog posts or add more elements.
  • You can make the amount of money as a lot of bloggers are making a good amount of money from their blogs and if you put more content and more work, you will make more money.

Cons of writing on your blog:

  • You have to wait. Some bloggers write every single day for a year or two before they make potential money from their blog. So, you have to wait to start seeing big checks from your blog.
  • Built-in traffic. On your very first day, you will have zero traffic. You will publish your first article and if you check it after 24-hours, it may have zero views. This is why you should learn SEO.
  • You have to do a lot of different jobs at the same time if you are managing a blog. You have to be your own SEO marketer, writer, and brand manager. Most bloggers who are making a good amount of money can outsource these things but we all have to start with doing all these jobs ourselves.

Writing On Medium Vs Blog: A Comparison

Following are some of the differences between writing on Medium verses on your blog.

  1. Writing on Medium could be your way to make a six-figure income this year but if you want to make money from Blogging, then for making a six-figure income you have to wait for 2 or 3 years.
  2. By writing on your blog you can build your own community, make a multi-million dollar business, and even sell your site for millions of dollars. Writing on Medium could help you build a community and get recognition from across the world if you are writing great articles.
  3. Medium gives you a whole writing experience like giving a newsletter for free, helping you create a publication (Group) for specific interest groups, and build a community. Your article on Medium is always published in real-time not like submitting it to the moderators to review. Writing on a blog and building an email newsletter could be expensive if you cross some threshold.

So, I hope this comparison between having a blog vs writing on Medium.

Pro-tip:

Even if you choose to publish first on your blog, you can republish that article on Medium.
