Robbert Pattinson is returning for more vengeance. Matt Reeves’ The Batman has survived the wrath of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s massive overhaul of the DC Universe and is getting a sequel, although it will maintain its timeline separate from the wider DCU. The upcoming superhero sequel, now officially titled The Batman – Part II is all set to hit theatres on October 3, 2025, serving as a follow-up to the 2022 film with Robert Pattinson returning to play the titular character.

Warner Bros. Discovery is getting its DC cinematic offering in order, scrapping many projects in order to start afresh. The newly appointed heads of DC, James Gunn and Peter Safran, First 10 Projects of the New DC Universe Revealed for the new era of the DC film universe, which will not only breathe new life into our beloved superheroes but also help the DCU to better connect the comics to live-action, animation and gaming.
The Batman – Part II, however, will lie outside the continuity of Gunn’s newly established universe and remain a standalone project falling under the newly branded “DC Elseworlds” category. In DC comics, the tag Elseworld is given to those stories which are set in alternate realities that deviate from the established continuity of DC’s regular comics. And Gunn is implementing the same with their cinematic universe of DC superheroes.

Even though Matt Reeves’ The Batman exists outside the continuity bubble, Gunn revealed that Reeves would continue to expand the ‘Batman Crime Saga,’ with spin-off series like The Penguin, which is slated to begin filming sometime next month.
Gunn stated, “Matt is working on (The Batman sequel), which he thinks of as a Batman Crime Saga, which also includes (The Penguin) series, and it is its own thing. He’s hard at work on that. He came in and pitched us some amazing, really cool stuff the other day. So our plan is for that to continue.”
Even Safran reiterated the fact that they won’t push The Batman to the side in favour of wherever they plan on doing with their mainline Batman-centric stories, explaining that, “The Batman is not a stepchild. It’s all under DC, we are fully invested in the success of The Batman, just like we are everything else.”
Reeves previously said that The Penguin spin-off series will connect directly with The Batman – Part II and basically will set things up for when audiences catch up with the billionaire orphan in the movie. However, no synopsis or plot details have been shared at this point in time and it’s also unknown whether Reeves is done writing the script for The Batman – Part II. Even though Pattinson’s version of the Caped Crusader doesn’t exist in the main DC cinematic continuity, the story for Pattinson’s Batman might not end just yet. The superhero might get a chance to show up in various DC crossover events that can happen later down the road.
